Here’s a cover to a collection of Robert Jordan’s Conan stories. Again, I don’t like this one as if that’s supposed to be Conan on the horse to the right then he’s just too small.
Every time I read a “Conan” thread, I get disappointed in myself for not having read the Howard books yet…
I got through a few Conan books when I was a teen, but I think they were all (I think) Robert Jordan. Maybe I’ll scour amazon tomorrow.

This is the one I have and the one I recommend.
hell yes. i screamed like a little girl when i found that in a bookstore

There’s an HP Lovecraft one like it that I wish I’d bought last time I was in Glasgow.

Aye. At first I was like WTF, but after actually reading the article it sounds as if the guy behind it might actually have a clue.
But like you said, we’ll see.
Those three books are my recommendation for anyone wanting to read who the character Conan really is. They contain every single one of the original Howard stories with no other authors’ works thrown in whatsoever. There are even drafts and notes from Howard included as well. Really good compilation.
I finally saw the Conan reboot recently. I do feel like Jason did a decent job portraying young Conan though the rest of the movie was okay at best. Agree that nobody will be quoting it 20 years from now. I also feel like physically he was fine for the role since Conan didn’t achieve his true beast mode until late 20’s into early/mid 30’s.
In talking about it with a friend we decided that in the original you got the sense from both Arnold and the movie that here was a man who would, in fact, just kill you because you offended him in some way. The whole thing was dark, stark, and not only conflict but real struggle hung in the air (which the reboot failed to capture).
Even as a younger man my favorite part(s) of the original series was when he was older; the conflict between his savage nature and his sense of obligation to duties he sometimes abhorred, his awareness of failing but still mighty physicality, the friends from adventures past he would encounter and call on for aid. Obviously they had to skip/modify large sections of the books for the original movie but I do hope they capture some of those aspects in the ‘sequel’.
I love that they’re planning to pick up where the original left off, and that Arnold is age-appropriate for the movie (roughly). Special effects and generally improved cinematography should help him be more Arnold-ey and my suspension of disbelief should do the rest. Also my excitement!
Now, should he knock out a camel/horse or no? Hmm…
I also literally laughed out loud at the elocution line. ![]()

This one? Still got that bad boy wrapped in the plastic. One of these days I’ll give it a read through, as I’ve read different collections with all the stories in them.
And I think when comparing Conan from the movie to Khal vs Comparing Conan from the Books to Khal you have a point. What i mean is, after reading a couple of the Conan portrayals by Mr. Howard, I din’t get that brute-solve everything with your fists barbarian-attitude that Arnold shows on the screen. I slowly switched my train of thought about Conan (from the books) into exactly what you described. Might be just my biased attitude though honestly because when I was younger (I’m talking like 12yrs old lol) I only watched the Conan movies for the pure unadulterated violence. That’s just kind of how I remember it.
By the way, does anyone have recommendations for Conan literature not written by the original author that is actually good? I have never read any Conan based story not penned by Howard himself out of fear that whoever did it would fuck up the character in some way, because that seems inevitable whenever another author tries to take the reins on someone else’s vision. But I would be very interested to hear if anyone read stuff that they thought fit in well and didn’t shit all over how Howard wrote Conan originally.

Should be a terrible, awful, nearly unwatchable movie. Like every other movie Arnold has starred in since True Lies, which was 18 years ago.
That’s where I draw the lone too, though I cut Eraser a bit of slack but that’s because it felt like a movie he should have made in the 80s.
“Eraser” and “The 6th Day” were the only good ones after “True Lies”. Eraser was the better of the two IMO.
