The stones were always much better I thought, in the years of Goat’s Head Soup and before

Rush sucks BIG TIME. Holy shit,a guy that sounds like a chick. Big Whoop,Silversun Pickups has the same gimmick but at least they make good music.
Not a fan of Yes then? ^^
I don’t think the Beatles were the best band ever. They adapted well to the hippy era and definitely wrote some great songs but the greatest band eva?? That title’s obviously reserved for Zappa and the Mothers! =P
what about Primus?
you gotta be liking them, Sternie~
I fucking LOVE Primus and can’t wait for their new album! =D
Primus SUCKS!
No, no, no, no. WF sorry man Primus is awesome. You are just a little behind today on calories, go eat a 5 guys, take a few deep breaths and enjoy Johnny was a Race car driver.
Haha, that’s what Primus fans say to acknowledge one another. And it’s Jerry was a race car driver. C’mon DJ, I’m not all bad.
I know that, and yes my bad. Tired I have been up since 4 am and worked all day and I am old. I like the bass guitar that is why I like Red hot chili peppers also. And three man bands, I love three man bands like ZZtop etc.
Thought maybe you were razzing, but its hard to tell over text. Pork Soda is one of my favorite albums of the '90’s. Saw ZZ Top on the Recycler tour when I was younger. They had a giant car eating robot, it was awesome.

Love the Foo’s & Queens of the stone age. Grohl is definitely a genius. Can not stand Nirvana.

I think it was the attitude during the era, really was a time in my life of anger and this was a test bonding thing. As I go older I like soundgarden more and the Foo of course.
^Yeah, all that fucking angst, shit got old quick. IMO overshadowed Cobain’s writing skills.

Man we have about 4 more days and the deal is done.
What about these power trios:
The Police
E.L.P
King’s X
James Gang
Motorhead

When you ask about other peoples opinion about what the greatest band ever was,the answer is almost always unanimous,The Beetles. My question is;Why? What makes them so special? Why do people like them so much? What makes them placed over bands such as “The Who” or “The Doors”? I try asking this to Beetle fans but they usually shut me down and insult me for even asking.I listen to some of their songs and I even like them but I wouldnt say im a fan of them
Didn’t read the rest of the thread before I responded so sorry if I’m repeating something:
I think it’s silly to debate “greatest band” because there are so many different aspects and layers to music that one band might be great at it or a few of those aspects but there’s always going to be something they’re not so great at.
Personally, I think Led Zep was/is the greatest band. That’s a catalog of music that I can pretty much listen to beginning to end and just think, Holy shit these guys were fucking amazing.
Each individual is included as the best at their own individual task (Robert Plant as one of the greatest rock front men … Jimmy Page, one of the greatest guitarist … JPJ fucking musical genius period … Bonham, one of the best and most influential drummers). Sometimes you get a group of guys like that and it doesn’t work out, other times it’s Led fucking Zeppelin.
The Beatles, in my humble opinion, are overrated. But they’re also a good band that made some of the most beloved songs on the planet. That’s nothing to scoff at…
Id agree with both of you . I’m not a huge fan? But they were maybe the most influential rock band. I like zeppelin better. And the stones more than the beatles. The stones were the best bar band ever IMO and Zeppelin was the best hard rock band .

This could be a cluster fuck of a thread, but before that happens…
What made them who they are…
A willingness to change styles, ambition, iconoclasm, ego, a gift for melody & timing.
Creativity in song writing & experimentation in the studio.
They wrote songs in different keys, used all types of instruments, & they were the culmination of many influences.
They brought excitement, talent, & relative complexity to a new & rapidly changing format.
They were fresh & they were raw.
Two of the greatest songwriters that have ever put pen to paper.
I’m not the biggest fan of them either. But the obvious is the obvious.
^This
I like some of their stuff. Helter Skelter is a great song.
Overrated? No. They deserve the accolades. Very talented musicians, the music holds up well and they helped start the whole thing.
I prefer Led Zep and the Who but Beatles were a truly great and influential band.

With what I wrote, one of the most impressive things about the Beatles is that they accomplished everything they did while being together less than 10 years total in the age before social networks and the internet. That’s truly mind boggling if you think about it. I mean, they completely turned the world upside down with sound, both theirs and word of mouth. That’s crazy.
Which is to say: they were one of the early instances of the hit engine (though Elvis is arguable the greatest for this). “Pop” music in the sense of overwhelmingly popular, but also very much a creation of three-network television (in the US), a time when the Ed Sullivan show was the ONLY show to watch, when a given program could grab a 30, 50, or 90% audience share. Today’s fractured media markets offer no such opportunities, though channels such as TV and broadcast radio strive for this harder than ever, creating even more of a wasteland. Too much product, too many channels, too much diversity, only the young and the truly inane lowest denominator will break out. But on the long tail there’s a ton of great stuff.
But they pretty much invented the modern pop-rock band and all that follows (singles, concerts, t-shirts, merchandise, movies, videos, …).
That said, I think Print’s summary was good. The Beatles were fresh, evolved, left a huge impression, crossed myriad musical boundaries (rock, R&B, eastern influence, blues, big band, …), and were far more creative than much (though not all) of what followed.
Well you’re still talking about them. Their music tells an interesting story. It records the history and the transformation of their music and lifes. Their worldwide popularity right thought the various drug stages. They were also the first rock’n roll superstars. I think a lot of poeple either never followed their music or are to young to understand the impact the Beatles had on the entire world.
There are many other great bands, fact legendary bands. They all have there place in history, it’s just not at the top. Fact is they are not even my favorite band, but they are what they are!
Can’t deny their effect on popular music. I wouldn’t go as far as calling them the greatest but much of what they wrote can be enjoyed (listened to) today as it was yesterday.
What do you define the greatest as?
The most number of record sales? Most albums sold?
The most number of number ones?
The most influential band/group in that genre (i.e. in popular music but not in others)? This includes changing music styles, quality of lyrics, application of instruments and effects etc?
Reviewed by a panel of music experts?
This is by no means exhaustive but from my point of view being a fan of music (or more importantly I love the culture and influence of music, how bands were formed, who these musicians were etc greatly).
As for overrated I guess I didn’t grow up during their peak (maybe very few of us did) but I’d struggle to pick them as THE greatest. Certainly Zeppelin, Floyd, U2, the Mac would all feature on my list.
