Are The Beatles Overrated?

Led zeppelin is the greatest band of all time, and I honestly don’t know how that can be argued. With that, if the Beatles never happened, we never would’ve had Zep, the Stones (who are also overrated), Cream, the Yardbirds (which Zep was a continuation of), etc… From a musical talent standpoint, yes they are. But in terms of their impact on music and pop culture as a whole, they’re probably the biggest and best thing to happen to rock ‘n’ roll, and music in general. So no, they’re not overrated. If anything they don’t get the credit they deserve.

I pretty much agree with this as well. And I don’t usually agree with ya, Whitey.

LOL @ the question mark!

I was huge Beatles fan as a kid (my mom still has an old tape of me singing one of their songs when I was 2 years old… in '64 or '65).

Now, their music is like the wallpaper in your grandma’s living room… you don’t even notice it anymore.

I won’t deny the huge influence they had on music in general, but I think what I posted above is pretty funny.

Way overrated. Significant in history? Hell yes. As “original” as people say as if their style wasn’t influenced by others of the time period greatly? Hell no. I think every kid should know who they are.

I don’t think every kid should be informed they lived up to the hype.

Same goes for Elvis.

With what I wrote, one of the most impressive things about the Beatles is that they accomplished everything they did while being together less than 10 years total in the age before social networks and the internet. That’s truly mind boggling if you think about it. I mean, they completely turned the world upside down with sound, both theirs and word of mouth. That’s crazy.

This could be a cluster fuck of a thread, but before that happens…

What made them who they are…

A willingness to change styles, ambition, iconoclasm, ego, a gift for melody & timing.

Creativity in song writing & experimentation in the studio.

They wrote songs in different keys, used all types of instruments, & they were the culmination of many influences.

They brought excitement, talent, & relative complexity to a new & rapidly changing format.

They were fresh & they were raw.

Two of the greatest songwriters that have ever put pen to paper.

I’m not the biggest fan of them either. But the obvious is the obvious.
Well put Print.

This is the usual revisionist bullshit by little kids. I see the same thing on some of the guitar boards I frequent about EVH - “Oh, Eddie VH is not as ground breaking as he’s made out to be. Oh his influence on rock guitar is marginal and overstated.” What HUGE bullshit - Van Halen was the father of modern rock guitar - no one fucking played like that in the mid 7o’s. Sure, you could argue that he didn’t invent tapping (and he didn’t: Steve Howe did it a little bit back in the early 70’s on a few of the Yes albums, as well as a few others) but no one expanded it like he did - not to mention his hot rodded Marshall tone, his homemade guitar that combined the electronics of a Les Paul with the body and neck of a Strat, and his ridiculous chops and rhythmic sensibilities…

But I was the same little kid when I was 21 - couldn’t care much about Hendrix and Page because I was blown away with EVH, Randy Rhoads, and guys like George Lynch and Yngwie. But now that I’m older, I appreciate those players a lot more and don’t diminish their importance solely due to my own prejudice. It’s common for the newer generation to reject the pop culture of the previous…

And what Print said is right on - not a massive Beatles fan myself, but retarded shit like “They Suck!” is uncalled for. Clearly they were innovators and were talented, prolific songwriters. Great melodic and harmonic sense…

Print is a dog with an unusually large tongue.

that is it.

and apparently, he’s learned to type with his paw.

but really, the truth is the truth.

what the hells does a dog know about muzik?

Not a fan of Yes then? ^^

I don’t think the Beatles were the best band ever. They adapted well to the hippy era and definitely wrote some great songs but the greatest band eva?? That title’s obviously reserved for Zappa and the Mothers! =P
what about Primus?

you gotta be liking them, Sternie~
I fucking LOVE Primus and can’t wait for their new album! =D
