Apparently Night Fishing is a Dangerous Hobby

Sky, I honestly thought of you when I read this, because I know we both like to fish. I also sent this to my father, as he’s been doing a lot of travelling to fish lately before the Walleye season dies off.

One must wonder what would have been the result if the guy was carrying and emptied his magazine into the group. Part of me thinks after one or two of them dropped that the rest would run. These aren’t hardened soldiers, they are punks/thugs looking to prey on easy targets. Sure, logic would dictate if there’s 15-20 of them, they can’t all be shot, but of that group, none are willing to risk being one to take a bullet.

Sadly, we’ll never know, and even sadder, I’m sure the media would be all over it parroting him as being a profiler and not needing to defend himself with a gun, he should have just talked his way out of it. What pissed me off the most was on another site a poster stated there must be more to the story because he shouldn’t have been out at 1 am. Goes to show how stupid liberals can be. The guy was night fishing at a dock/harbor with other people (that tried to help) and was killed be a roving mob.
Those were my thoughts:

Always take your gun when you go fishing.
Am I the only one around here that doesn’t take a gun fishing?
Yup. Everyone knows the rule: Take a gun to a hook fight.
Oh, I’ll fire someone up with a whooley bugger from 60-70 feet away with no problem. Last thing they’ll ever see is some green fluffy shit, then booom! lights out!

I don’t carry a gun or a knife, though I should; knife at least. Then again, I tend to fish in secluded areas deep in the wooded areas often times while wading in the water. I’m pretty confident that this type of landscape would be kryptonite for the average pack of feral ghetto animals.

I recall one time I was visiting family in San Pedro, CA. It was late and I decided to walk alone down to the shoreline, had to jump a park fence to get there, it was around midnight with lots of clouds and little moonlight. Quite dark out.

I had no reason for being there, just feeling contemplative and wanted to listen to the water.

There was a paved footpath sloping back and forth down about the width of a road, then it narrowed to about the width of a sidewalk before connecting to some wooden stairs that went down to the rocks.

Well after I was there for however long, kinda lost track of time, I was on my way back up when at the part where the footpath bottle-necks I encountered a group of dubious looking hispanic/latino youths probably around 17-19 yrs old, around 9 or 10 of them. They were drinking and smashing beer bottles, one of em had a spray can and was doing some crude graffiti. I paused, startled for a moment and sizing up my situation when one noticed me. He looked back over his shoulder and chittered something in spanish, his comrades laughed and turned; I had their full attention. Rather than stand there I walked up, said ‘comparamiso’ (i never learned spanish but I picked up a few things, pretty sure it means excuse me or something close) and shouldered by.

And that was it. Truth is I was terrified there’s a bit of gang violence in that area around LA and such that I have heard about, and I could have easily been one of those news stories. Perhaps if I let on that I was frightened or if they just happened to be so inclined, I could have been in some trouble. Fortuitously there was a female or two in the group and I think that diverted much of their attention, or at least that of the alpha of the pack who might otherwise stir up some trouble.

Kind of a lame story I guess, but some people don’t get that lucky.

O.k., now I don’t feel so bad. One of my favorite places when I go over to north central PA- the confluence of a rocky spring creek into a small run at the toe of a mountain.

That there is paradise! I’ll take that as my choice of body of water over the beach any day. Even a beach with scantly clad ladies everywhere! (Yes, I just did say that.)

PA has some beautiful streams. That reminds me of Elk a bit though up in Erie. There was on particular bend in the creek that could be nearly identical.

I highly recommend the Outflow area, especially if you go over and fish right next to where the outflow water actually enters the river. If you’re lucky you’ll be there when they open it at night and get the benefit of the walleye / trout drawn in to feed on the stunned bait fish. That spot is highly prized, but many areas are good.

I lol’d at the wooly bugger. My father has tied so many of those damned things (and me maybe a small 10% of his efforts) for Steelhead its ridiculous.

Why I always have 2 extra clips with me. They might still get me but I am going to get off at least 30+ rounds into the mob. And like others have states more than likely when the first couple shots ring out they are going to scatter like roaches. No one wants to chance taking a bullet.

this is why my carry weapon has a capacity of 20. It is a little bulkier than a single stack, but getting it in a situation like this because I didnt have enough rounds would so severely cramp my afterlife.

I have often thought of stacking the first 5 as jacketed hollowpoints and then switching to penetrating rounds. if i go through 5, something is seriously fucking up my day, and maybe the extra penetration could hit 2 shitheads with 1 stone. Then I think about collateral damage and I would rather die than hurt an innocent person.

Now Erie, that’s definitely combat fishing at the mouths of the creeks. I haven’t seen any, but have heard of fights breaking out at the mouth of Walnut. Elk frustrates me to no end. I’ve been hit in the leg by running steelhead more times than I can count but have only ever gotten one on the hook.

We actually have only ever fished Elk Creek. I’ll have to ask my father what the spot’s called we fished - I always enjoy the names fisherman come up with. I do know the guy who lives across the creek owns a Doberman, so you don’t stand on that side of the creek - I love Dobey’s though, that’s why I own one.

Yea Steelhead are very difficult to catch. I sadly foul snagged more than I caught (not intentional). We just practice catch and release though, and the fight is still good, its just not as rewarding.

I’ve heard at the waterfalls or something in Walnut is where there have been fights. Basically any of the hotspots where guys want their space to fish without being bothered - kind of like grizzlies during a salmon spawn, except we aren’t as awesome with our tackle.
