Greyhound racing is a disgusting business. The abuse is rampant, and the dogs are destroyed after their 3 year average career.
I occasionally walk rescued hounds at a facility set up just for their rescue and for promoting legislation to ban that fucking sport.
In spite of the racing lifestyle, these retired dogs make great loving and gentle pets.

wait…what? How are the dogs abused and destroyed?
You know why there are no smart greyhounds?
The smart ones stop racing, and wait for the metal rabbit to come around the track again at 35mph.
The last thing that goes through that dogs mind? A metal rabbit.
for one thing.
The smart one’s jump the wall and run the angle. Then they just happen to be useless for racing after that.
Yeah, I don’t really know anything about greyhound racing.
A prelude to this, I can only speak on racing in Arizona. I’ve been involved with greyhound racing, in Arizona, since I was able to walk and fed and brought water to the dogs. As well, played with the puppies.
Greyhound racing is a wonderful sport. Great fun, exciting, and fast paced, even more than horseracing. Don’t mind Dwarf, I have a suspicion that he has never been on the backside of a track. He probably saw a few videos of trainers abusing dogs and other animals. Someone told him this is how everyone does it. Trainers don’t do that and in fact have strong attachments to their dogs, crying and slobbering all over themselves if they have to put a dog to sleep.
Side note on the breeding of greyhounds: The Department of Racing does not allow culling; it is no longer an option. If you cull your dogs, you will find that there are heavy consequences. Not an option when they are puppies or when they finish their racing career. It used to be, but now as soon as someone has a litter of puppies, investigators from the Department of Racing comes out to look at the pups, collect the information, and document the environment.
Three years ago, some folks found three greyhounds dead in the desert. Within three weeks after that, the state tracked down the owners and prosecuted them. Iron Dwarf, just because some people are not responsible and are cruel does not make the whole sport and everyone in it cruel and abusive.
Neither my father, nor myself are that way. None of the folks I have dealt with (except one that I know of) has been cruel or abusive to their dogs; most in fact treat the dogs like their children.
