Any T-Nation members here live in alberta? I have been reading alot recently about how many jobs there are out there and many newspaper articles stating that it is a good place to move to start a career and get a good starting point. As i am now done college and looking for a career i thought this may be a good idea to move out west (im in ontario). Can anyone shed some light on the situation??
Well even Tim Hortons is starting people at 12 dollars. That’s pretty ridiculous by my thinking.
It’s all true. What are you looking to do? Where in Alberta are you planning on living? Calgary, Edmonton and Fort Mac are all below 0% vacancy for rentals. If you have friends out here, come out and ride a couch as long as you have to. Starting wages in Calgary for a “floor sweeper” construction helper starts at around $20.00/hour.
Some posters said that in various parts of Canada the women are much more generous with oral sex. Like as almost as a handshake.
I find this hard to believe, care to shoot it down or give it credence?
Alberta is certianly booming and if your looking for a job, its certianly easy to find one. Especially if your field is engineering or construction. What is the field your looking to get into? As for housing/renting… Im not sure about the rest of Alberta (i know calgary is terrible.) But Edmonton isnt too too bad for renting (buying is starting to get very pricey and houses are going off the market in days.)
As for the comment on Canadian girls, i wouldnt say its like a “handshake” but… i can give some credence to that statement.
Well my experience is all in emergency services, specifically firefighting. However i am not expecting a job like that (although that is the end goal). Also on that note i was told alot of departments are hiring in big numbers out west. is this true?
Anyways, i have a friend who is working in the oil fields and loves it and is making over 70K and has just a highschool education. Basically im just looking to be pointed in the right direction. Where would one look for job postings and information? thanks again.

Yeah if you dont mind working out in Ft. Mac you can make that kind of money… As for job postings try…
http://working.canada.com/
You could also look on big oil companies websites such as: Shell, Petro-Canada, Suncor, Syncrude, Nexen (Long Lake).
Just do a general search on google for Fort McMurray jobs or Edmonton jobs or Calgary Jobs…
If your having difficulty finding a job shoot me a quick PM and I’ll try to better point you in a direction.
I’ve lived in Calgary for most of my life and I love it here. Just be prepped for some challenges in finding a place to live thats affordable. Fort Mac for the money but its damn hard to live up there. If Oil field work is your thing I say move to Edmonton. If you can get on with an office job then move to Calgary.
Why not consider what you’ve been trained to do man? I have some firefighting friends and they love the lifestyle and the money…and they’re hiring like mad out here.
PM me if I can be of any help.

Ive now been here in Alberta for just over a year now. Living in Red Deer, about halfway between Edmonton and
Calgary. Moved out from Ontario last August as my fiances brother was getting married so we just moved here.
My career goals are also to become a firefighter having completed my 1001’s in Vermillion in 04. Im currently in the middle of Edmontons hiring process, just waiting for the interview date. Edmonton is going to be hiring again next year as well as Calgary. Grande Prairie is hiring right now as well.
There is a ton of work out here and it pays pretty decent, but as was already stated the vacancy rates are horrible and rent is climbing as is property value.
See Ya
Pete
I’m from Edmonton, and I can confirm that everything people say in this thread is true. Around the Edmonton and Ft. Mac area, it is booming like crazy. I live about 10 min from the gigantic traffic interchange/overpass/whatever on ellerslie road/calgary trail.
Ft. Mac is the way to go if you wanna make a lot of money, just be used to working on camps and 4 days on 4 days off kind of thing, sometimes 12 hour shifts or more. But with these jobs, you can clear about 4K every 2 weeks.
I’m a student right now at the U of A, but last summer I worked at a concrete plant that makes barriers and such. I worked 9 hours a day, weekends off, and made 17.50$/hr. The job was so easy, although it was labour intensive.
The demographics of people are so screwed up now. It’s usually the professional occupations that make over the 70K/year mark. Here in Alberta, trade skills are making the most money right now.
As for housing, edmonton has a 0.064% vacancy rate at the moment. And our house price has increased 300% in the last 2 years.
My parents have lived here almost all their lives and they say it was the same way back about 10 years ago. Huge boom, lots of jobs, high wages, etc. But what goes up must come down, and they hit a bust as well.
But if you want to come to Alberta to make some money right now, it’s the place to be.
TKL You probally live about 5 minutes away from me! Small world! I’ve got a question for all you Edmonton T-Nation members… Where do you work out at? I’m always looking for a better gym…

You could get a job as an EMT up in the oil sands.
Accident’s happen.
The jobs are here, but like everyone is saying, real estate and rents are insane!

Haha, sweet. Last year I used the university facilities, and for most of the summer I used the millwoods rec center. Now I switched over to southside World Health Club because they have a GHR machine and a good amount of squat racks. Just avoid the 5pm to 10pm crowd though, lol.
By the way, have you been on calgary trail south past 23rd ave lately? That project they are working on is massive, I think I counted like 15 overpasses. Makes Edmonton look important though, haha.

Crazy thats where I’m currently going - I love the GHR machine… 5pm to 10pm is pretty much the time I go… as for the crowd they aren’t too bad - I’ve seen a few squat rack curlers. The one thing that is both bad and good is that hardly anyone ever uses the power rack or squat rack (most ppl just work upperbody). The bad part is as I’m fairly new to weight training and after reading the Brotherhood of Iron thread it would be nice to latch onto some veteran. As for Calgary trail the company I work for is doing some work with those overpasses!
as a resident of CFB cold lake alberta, roughly 3 hours northeast of edmonton or three hours south of fort mac, there is more work then there are people here. almost every store has help wanted signs and if you cant find a job that pays more then 15 dollers an hour you simply arnt looking. im 17 years old and all summer iv been cashing paychecks that are just under three grand. i also live in oil country. rent isnt as out of controle here as it is in fort mac but it is getting up there.
welcome to alberta, we have all hell for a basment.
Thanks for all the replies guys. In response to criedem and z-man, i would love nothing more than to land a job in my chosen field however it seems easier said than done and i am always continuing my training so i can land such a job.
Also thanks againt to all who posted, sounds like fort mac is the place to be (and all of alberta for that matter), however housing sounds a little rough to say the least…
I lived with relatives for about 6 weeks when i first moved here. It was tough finding an apartment, especially one that allowed dogs. I kind of bent the truth on that one a little bit as I said my dog is a lab cross.
The best way to do it would be to try to secure a place to live before you come out here. Try contacting some of the property management companies or find a place to stay for a short period of time.
See Ya
Pete
Some great replies guys, thanks alot.
anyone else?
