Company I work for requires that we wear a uniform. I was reading the other day in a book that if the company uses a logo on the uniform they are required to pay for them.
Ever since I’ve worked there the employees are required to buy them from the company. This also includes independent contractors.
A quick Google search turned up the same thing, but not sure how old the info is.
I think they are supposed to provide a certain number of uniforms and then any others you have to buy yourself. Any place I’ve ever worked that required that paid for the initial set of clothes themselves. Hell, at some, you had to give the clothes back when you quit…like at (the now extinct) AstroWorld.

I’m reasonably sure that’s still the case, where if they require you to wear it, and it has their logo on it, they gotta provide it to you.
Like those ugly digtial cammies they got you guys wearing now…thank god I got out before they were mandatory!
I was thinking the rule was that if you couldn’t wear it as regular clothing, the uniform is tax deductible; generally, the company would want to take this deduction, but maybe they don’t give a crap and are letting you take it.

I have no idea.
2% floor for the individual though. So it sucks to take the deduction personally.
Unless they make dirt money, or wear SUPER expensive shirts, you won’t realize more than $10 or $20.
Anyone making enough to own a home, will likely not get the deduction at all, to be frank.
this is interesting because my company requires a uniform and we can even be suspended if not worn properly, but we have to pay for it. They pay for it when you start but take 50$ out of your paycheck until youve paid them back the 350$ it costs. PMPM so youre saying it should be tax deductible then?

I make no claims, I don’t do that tax shit, that was just something I vaguely recalled.

All true. Let it also be noted that the uniforms are also deductible even if they don’t have the logo, but can’t be worn outside of that job (within reason). For instance, anything with your name on it can be deducted as well.
I’m not aware of any laws that force the employer to pay for uniforms, though.

Frank n Beans?
You bring up a good point…
If you don’t itemize, you can’t get the deduction. And most people need to own a home to itemize. So you’re pretty much SOL.
So… just buy the shirt and look for a different job if it bothers you a lot.
I buy my own suits… But I hear your that it sucks to pay for something with their logo on it. I’ve had it both ways when I was an electrician - some companies asked you to buy company shirts and others provided it. I think that there was a union meeting about it and if you had to buy the shirt, they couldn’t MAKE you wear it - same with hard hats… But this was a “union” decision, not law…
Shit if you and your co-workers feel strongly enough about it, go ahead and organize! LOL (be prepared to fired, though) Bottom line, in a fucked up economy YOU need the job more than THEY need you… So bend over…
