not sure what you’re implying there as far as going more than PN recommends or not… anyways, Im’ making progress is there something wrong with my plan then?
i wasnt bashing you at all lol. i have the PN book and berrardi recommends like 40g of protein for 5 or 6 meals a day. and i know youre a PN fan so i put two and two together.

i dont know why JF thinks every post i make is bashing him :s

JF… I know this thread really isn’t about you but if you want an opinion on your situation let me know. I wrote it out but didn’t post it.

My bad dude, guess my mental state of expecting to be ribbed made me read into your posts  apologies

Sure, can’t hurt

Though I’m just following my coach’s guidelines at this point so I doubt I’ll make any changes for the time being

AGH! I want to hit people who say “I’m on the protein” or ask “Do you take protein?”

At this point you’re probably right, but I’m also getting around 3500 cals with about 55% fat, and keeping carbs around 100-150g/day, so the rest is protein ;)
How well’s that working for you? That high-fat, med-protein, low-carb approach? (Besides myself), I’ve never known anyone else who’s actually done that.
I love it. I was using a similar approach maybe 6 months ago to assess how it was for health and I got much leaner in the process. I still did/do high carb on the weekend, though I may drop that to 1 day since I’m putting fat on more quickly than I want.

As for bulking, it’s going fine as well, in the past 13-14 weeks I’ve put on 16#s with about 11 of that being lean mass, I’ve stalled the past 3 weeks in weight since I cut portions slightly.

Big downside to this diet is it’s way expensive especially since we buy I’d say 90-95% organic/pastured foods. This is one of the reasons I put off gaining weight again for so long. The cost just wasn’t worth it. Right now it is though
Cool, glad to hear that’s working for you. It’s been working well for me too. I was at 135 for several years at a very low bf% and have managed to get myself up to 155 since mid-June. Around February due to a failed psychiatric med (sigh antidepressant-induced depression) I had dropped to 119. I got myself back to 135ish using whole milk, and then moved more toward beef, cream, half&half and eggs to get to 155. That’s dropped the carbs and increased the fat.

I’ve not found ‘organic, cage-free, omega 3’ eggs yet though. The half&half gets expensive though, since I go through about 3 gallons of it a week (lol, just calculated that one). I’ve not gone organic (or raw) with that.

coach as in coach like CT. Not a football coach, or something like that.

edit- not that CT is my coach

During a recent inspection, FDA investigators found that several of the companiesâ?? products contained milk ingredients that were not declared on the product labels. In addition, the company failed to clean processing equipment between batches and control allergens in the facility.

FDA investigators also discovered live and dead rodents and rodent urine, feces and gnaw holes on bags of product.
Have you never had a hot dog, hamburger, sausage? Do you think any company with food everywhere doesn’t have rodent urine or rodent feces or the actual rodent itself in there?

Or the fact that many sausage casings once had pig feces in them…

Oh ok, so basically a trainer/nutritionist?

Either way, here is my opinion… These are my observations, no bashing at all.

IMO 300g is still overkill for someone 165lbs. It’s also very expensive and a good amount of that protein is not being utilized efficiently (aka not eliciting an anabolic response)
If you’re eating roughly 100-150g of carbs a day and are gaining fat too quickly then your effort in the gym is lacking.
I think a lot of people are very carb-aphobic. You could possibly be part of this group based on your consistently low carb intake

I agree that you are probably using an expensive source of protein, and it’s possible that it’s being underutilized. I do know respected people have suggested only .4-.6g of protein; however some of those same people also supplement with amino acids, which is pretty much like eating more protein, at least once it’s broken down in the stomach.

That being said, I myself am getting a minimum of 1.8g/lb. I’m also taking digestive enzymes and HCL tablets with pepsin, with the hope that this improves the amount of protein that actually gets used.

Are you working with a coach on the lifting or on the nutrition?

Fair points. However, I’m not sure if perhaps my 2 days on the weekend where I eat whatever I want, essentially very high carb could also be the culprit.

Essentially I’m just eating a little too much, thus I have backed off slightly, but Im’ waiting to see if I backed off too much.

^^lol… Yeah eating whatever you want on the weekends could possibly do that to you.

Still, 300g pro is not nesecary for you IMO… But hey, it’s your money.

^I agree.

It can’t hurt, but it probably doesn’t help. Hell, I only get about 200g-250g of protein a day at 202 lbs. I honestly think even 1g/lb is a bit overkill. Your body probably won’t even use a lot of it.

It will use it, just not for extra muscle growth. Then again, with all the fat Im’ eating (at least I think it’s that) sometimes my stools are telling me maybe I should cut back on the oils a little.

I still keep hearing mixed opinions on ‘what the body does with excess protein’. Has anyone come across anything definitive in terms of whether it’s stored as fat or whether it simply goes down the toilet?

In the ideal world, I’d love for any excess protein to just be sitting around in the bloodstream as free aminos to build new muscle… lol

When I was young & dumb (like 20 yo), I used to down 2 to 3 whey shakes + food every day. I was weighing something like 175 pds that time, and would get bigger. I was definately taking TOO MUCH, along with 5 to 7 g creatine a day.

After something like 6 months, I got extremely tired + nauseaous + diarrheic (and I was downing 1 gallon water a day), I got my blood tested and my liver & kidneys were terribly fatigued. After 2 weeks everything went OK.

I used whey now and then when I needed a good source of prot. I never loved it. I m from France / Spain and used to great food (yes), and whey or milkshakes juste taste at best like a mid-level chocolate milk.

Creatine has 0 effect on my strength. The only thing it does is bloating my body. Maybe I rest a bit faster between the sets but not so much. I don’t take it anymore anyways.

There is probably no correlation between being off this and your PRs if you were taking then reasonably and not fatigued your body extensively. Everyone is different.

I m pretty sure that most big guys have to down whey / powder in order to be able to upkeep their body mass or they would have to eat tons of meat. Doable, but less convenient.
