Most of Europe has banned Thimersol (the mercury based perservative) decades ago. When our government finally decided to get rid of Thimersol laced vaccines they sent the leftovers to India and China. Guess where autism sprang up?

So if I understand you correctly, you believe that autism doesn’t actually exist, but is instead a result of bad or inattentive parenting. I acknowledge the fact that not every child with speech delays is autistic. But that doesn’t mean that autism isn’t a disease. Autism typically manifests itself not as simple speech delays, but as speech regression. My daughter began speaking and then lost the ability, as do many children diagnosed with autism. I doubt that lack of the proper stimulus would cause this. And there are other symptoms that are not associated with speech delays, like lack of eye contact and stimming (self stimulatory behaviors). These cannot be swept away as simply “lack of learned verbal skills.”
I don’t know what causes autism. I don’t know whether it’s brain damage, a chemical imbalance, or a reaction to a toxin like mercury. However, I do know that it is a learning disorder. Non-autistic children learn by imitation. Inspecting their environment and mimicking observed behaviors is intrinsically rewarding to them. If you’ve ever played “peek-a-boo” with a baby, you will understand what I’m referring to. Human interaction is rewarding for them. For the autistic child, this is not the case. They do not get any joy out of interacting with others. Most autistic children are not retarded or “brain damaged”, at least not in the typical sense. They quite simply do not connect with other people, so consequently they do not mimic them. Without the “ba ba” and “da da” type mimicry that eventually gives way to speech, autistic children will not develop language, and hence will not develop traditional social skills. Training programs like ABA use external reinforcement to encourage those positive behaviors that intrinsically develop in non-autistic children. Autism does not affect the whole brain, just certain portions. By teaching “around” those limitations, it is entirely possible to teach verbal and social skills to someone with autism.
Regarding autism and mercury, perhaps you should read this article. It was written by John F. Kennedy, Jr. and it makes some very compelling links between autism and the mercury-based preservative thimerosal used in the MMR vaccine.
