Any Quinoa Info for Me?

my trainer was going over some complete proteins with me and Quinoa came up, but before I could ask I had to go. Is there anyone that could provide some information for me?

let me google that for you

Quinoa does have the essential aminos but there is such a small amount of protein in quinoa that it really doesn’t matter. Stick to meat & poultry.

The aminos in quinoa are actually appreciable. It’s not nearly as much as meat sources (it has about 1/3 the protein per calorie as meat), but ~2500 calories from quinoa has about 90 grams of complete protein, so it is fairly dense in protein (ground beef has about 3X as much protein per calorie). Considering cost and the overall nutrition provided by quinoa, I would say it’s worth including in the diet and it’s worth counting the protein provided.

Have you ever used a computer before? Have you heard of a search engine?

Looks like chicken food and tastes like dirt, but still has a strange appeal. I like it instead of rice sometimes.

I actually just tried it for the first time 3 nights ago. Made it per the instructions on the box. Tasted it and said, hmmmmm, similar to fried rice, so I dumped some soy sauce on and ate it up. Next time I’ll throw some mixed frozen veggies in and I think it will be even better. Also we used chicken broth instead of water, I think that helps, we do that with rice sometimes also.

I actually love the taste of it, and my wife who is somewhat picky and Asian likes it too and occasionally prefers it over rice!

Interesting, my girlfriend is Asian and she thinks it’s absolutely insane that I would choose quinoa over rice. I’ve recently gone back to rice because it’s not worth the argument.

Agreed, quinoa tastes much better than oats or rice IMO. Just got to find a good recipe for it using almond/rice milk, cinnamon, and blueberries.

LIES!!! Nothing taste better than oats…nothing. If you want a recipe using almond milk, make rice pudding using Oat “Groats” instead of the rice. Fucking amazing.

bump

Have you tried quinoa flakes, cooks just like regular oats. Cook it with some water then add some evil full fat milk and reduce it down to a creamy consistency. Add mashed banana and crushed walnuts or some stewed apple and cinnamon, fupping gorgeous!

Quinoa is fucking good, I don’t what your talking about. It’s also extremely healthy for you and very versatile. I use everything from regular quinoa, to quinoa pasta and quinoa flour. The possibilities are endless and its a nutritionally superior option.

Just get regular white quinoa (they have it at Trader Joe’s) and your good to go.

ya, its pretty delicious. i boil it in chicken broth and then mix it with olive oil, cayenne pepper, and lemon juice and chunks of sweet potato. sweet and spicy.

Damn the chicken broth is a good idea, I’m trying that out.

x2. That combo does sound interesting. Always felt quinoa had a fluffy taste to it and was tasty by itself. Usually I’m eating it as a side to meat and steamed vegetables (very different from how I used to eat rice which was with chicken curry and Indian soups - I don’t eat rice much the last 3 months).

Does quinoa act similarly to grains when eaten? If I eat large amounts of pasta, oats, basically any grain I feel like it just sits in my intestines and clogs me up.

I’m looking for a rice/grain alternative to meet my daily calories and I’m strongly considering quinoa.

I love quinoa and try to eat some every day…actually most of my non-workout carbs come from quinoa…

If you don’t like the taste plain, there are a few things you can do…

One is Berardi’s Quinoa & Chicken recipe (cut up chicken, quinoa, some steamed spinach, and a couple tablespoons of lemon juice). This is pretty good.

For plain quinoa by itself, I like to sprinkle it with ground up mixed nuts. Also there is a low-sugar ginger dressing that tastes awesome on it (like the stuff you get in a hibachi restaurant).

Hmmm, I’m not sure on all the differences in grocery stores between Canada (specifically Ontario) and the U.S. but anyone from Ontario mind letting me know where they get their quinoa? I’ve checked out a couple local stores (Loblaws chains and Sobeys) but I can’t seem to come across it. Then again, I haven’t asked anyone working in the store, so that’s my fault. Is it categorized as a “health food” in the store? If so, I never have luck with such things at the Sobeys locations I’ve been to, but Zehrs has that handy section that I could pop over to.

Just curious if anyone would mind letting me know so I can try a bit harder to search for it on the shelf when I go shopping next. Thanks! I’ve never tried it, but I’ve been awfully curious to see what it’s like.

I don’t get that feeling at all with quinoa. Obviously it’s going to be different for every person, but quinoa is actually qualified as a vegetable seed. Definitely give it a try.
