Any Hunters on T-Nation?

Love the pictures!

I got into hunting because of my dad, but never really did any serious stuff. Mainly go hunting upstate NY so it’s obviously tame and doesn’t compare to the treks some guys do! I personally only hunt because I enjoy venison! Do a bit of deer, turkey, and rarely pheasent hunting. Haven’t gone fishing in some time either as I’m not really into the taste. Would absolutely love to do some deep sea fishing and big game hunts if I had the chance though.

I have been hunting a variety of game for 30 years. Started out with dove then deer with rifle. That lasted all of one season, wasn’t challenging enough so took up bow hunting deer & pigs. Have even hunted wild pigs with dogs and a knife. Adrenalin rush is an understatement. (Still hunt dove every year. Great to take the kids out and keep the dog in shape.) That was my addiction until I went duck hunting. At least I can admit I have a problem. Went out and picked up my first Black Lab while in college. There was no turning back…

Fast forward to the last four years that I took my obsession and turned it into a business guiding for ducks in the North Texas area. Not exactly the Mecca of duck areas but I manage to keep the clients happy.

Any T-nationers in the area that want to hunt ducks with me this season can contact me through my website: www.fourcurlnation.com Hell, if you are not in the area but are interested in learning about duck hunting check it out anyway.

Took ducks with a Metro-gun. 3’ extended choke. Acts as a silencer. Usually use it to shoot pigeons on a dairy farm becuse it will not scare the cows or scatter the birds. Took it duck hunting for kicks. Fun stuff especially since we were shooting old school paper shells that day.

Dog loves it more than I do I think. She is pissed when we get limits and have to leave with birds still wanting in.

It was a good day. I hunt open prarie holes out of layout blinds 90% of the time. Gets you 100% concealment at the waters edge with landing gear down and wings cupped up in your face. I aint’ got no worries… That Canvassback’s neck was as thick as a beer can. A real trophy. My client got it mounted.

Man EZrider, I have absolutely no interest in hunting (just not for me), but im jealous of all the views you must have seen while hunting.

OK, I understand that many people don’t “like” or “approve” of hunting. To each his/her own. But what on God’s green earth does this mean?!
I was kind of wondering this myself. What constitutes a “real” dog? And you are hunting rabbits with them, how hardcore does the dog really have to be?

EZRider, Those are some awesome pictures. Sounds like you did pretty well for yourself over there, especially with a bow. On a side note, I miss my Drenalin terribly. Traded it in for a Monster and greatly miss that smooth draw cycle.
Yeah, I love my Drenalin…had an Outback but sold it while I was in Africa. I never could shoot it like I can the Drenalin.

As for the pics, thanks. I’ve been very blessed to get to hunt in so many places and even more blessed to have been so fortunate to be able to take so many amazing animals. I do my own taxidermy which saves a lot of $ and we built a log home so everything looks like it belongs in our house. My wife is ok with it all since she hunts too.

That bear looks like it had a bad day.

I don’t like hunting but I LOVE the deer steaks, does this count?

In my limited experience of hunting with dogs, they need to be fairly well trained and probably of a certain kind of breed. They have to learn to not be spooked by the gun noise and learn to obey commands and not eat the animals at kill.

Our household dog (border collie) was too fast and would kill the rabbits herself.
Great pet, lousy hunting dog.

That’s why beagles are such great rabbit dogs:
they’re very loud so you know exactly where they are
they’re not very bright, so they follow their nose and track the animal instead of catching it - which gives you time and clearance to make the shot.
they probably have lousy hearing - the gun noise doesn’t seem to bother them.

I miss hunting. I miss the meat even more - high creatine levels, low fat, great taste.

The pictures of the game in Africa are awesome, btw.

Sure, that’s my Granddads point of view on it all. He doesn’t want to kill it but he will gladly eat it.

Was the bear hunt baited, called, or stalked? Just curious but I have watched videos of some of the hunts where the bears are called and they look like they get pretty intense. A hog with my bow may be on my to-do list for next year. Guy I work with killed a 360lb boar last year.

As a side note, when I was turkey hunting the other day I found two red foxes sleeping under a fallen pine, curled up together with one resting its head on the others back. Was one of the most amazing things that I have seen just wish I would have had a camera.

Me too. I went deer hunting once with my grandfather and I hated it. I love the meat… but I’m a pansy. I buy it off of friends now.

I’m primarily a small creek fisherman. Small creeks usually don’t have as much pressure and if you’re willing to get dirty you can find some real nice spots. The fish aren’t as big… but eh. I’m ok with that. I have a much more enjoyable time because I’m antisocial when it comes to fishing.

my first girlfriend said that when she was a kid she put a puppy in a cooler and forgot about him and he died.

I can agree with you there. There is something very relaxing about wading up a creek with a small box of baits in your pocket and a spinning rod (never tried fly fishing). I think everyone should get out and enjoy nature as much as they can. Whether its hunting, fishing, or just hiking, I think it would save some people some money on anti depressants.

That Bear was over bait…that’s how we always hunt them in Canada. I killed a couple on the ground and you are right, it’s pretty intense. I shot a nice Cinnamon in New Mexico with my bow. The arrow passed completely through but he turned and ran straight at me…I had to pull the 44 magnum and was able to get off two quick shots before he got me. I’ve got that on an old super 8 video somewhere. That was the 2nd greatest adrenalin rush I’ve ever had hunting. The 1st was killing this 400lb. wild boar in south Texas, with a KNIFE! I probably won’t ever do that again.

(But for the ultimate adrenal rush…sky diving trumps them all)

You hunt boars with a bow?

O_O

I have hunted them with a bow but have yet to put an arrow in one. Only been once though. That’s something I want to accomplish this year though.

Warning: If you try fly fishing you may very well end up ditching your conventional gear/spinning rods. At least as it pertains to small creek fishing.

I hunt deer. I shoot nusance species like ground hogs and coyote every chance I get, but I haven’t actually had a chance at a coyote yet. Squirrels may get popped if they break the rules.

For those who are against coyote hunting, I can’t wait until one moves into your suburb and eats your cat.

I remember one of the first times I went hunting with my dad I fell asleep, was pretty young and it was early! Woke up to a coyote 25 feet away or so, fired a warning shot at it since we weren’t sure of the laws on them at the time in the area!

Would absolutely take one now though after talking to the locals about them.
