Antler Porn

extremely disapointed in what this thread turned out to be

To me; (and I’m not a hunter, just not my thing), but hunting should involve more than just sitting their and putting deer piss on you .

Hell, I have deer come outside my house all the time. If I could half shoot I could sit on my picnic table and kill one in an hour. That’s not hunting IMO.
Agreed. Deer bed in my pasture almost every night. While I could easily shoot a deer from my deck (and I have been tempted), I choose not too. To me it is part of my commitment to a concept called “fair chase”, which is part of a hunter’s ethics. There is a big difference between hunting and grocery shopping with a gun.

FYI- You do not put deer piss on yourself. Hunters that use scents like that typically put it on a rag and drag it on the ground or on a cotton tab in a tree where they want to stop the deer for a shot.

I toyed with the title “look at this rack”, but thought it would be even worse.

What you have to understand is deer and other wild critters, that live in urban areas side by side with man where they can’t be hunted, are a whole different animal then ones living in truly wild areas. They become very accustomed to people and are almost like pets.

Travel to a more remote area where hunting is allowed and occurs right along side with more natural predation by bears and cougars and such and you have a much more wary animal. I’ve hunted in areas where you don’t see a deer for days straight not because there not there, but they are sticking to cover and hiding. A big buck or bull is even more wary that’s why they grow big racks in these areas.

Did he find it like that, or was it on a body?

If it’s the former, I can tell you exactly how it died. Hunter shoots a big buck out of season, gets scared and doesn’t want to get caught, but still doesn’t want to waste the meat. So, he cuts the head off before leaving the field and ditches it. A pretty dispicable act, but it happens frequently.

Whoa there Sherlock of the hills. While the scenario you described does occur and may have in this case, that great buck could have just died of old age. “I can tell you exactly how it died,” is a tad presumptuous.

When you find a buck skull all by itself, the cause is usually the same. Vanderlaan showed that this wasn’t the case, so yes it probably died of old age. I did premise my conclusion as to not exclude a natural death, so there is really no need to jump to name-calling.

Don’t be so sensitive, I just called you Sherlock not @$$hole. (seriously guy kidding just kidding). But, often when poaching has occurred for a ‘trophy animal’ the horns are sawed off and the carcass with all that good meat is what is found wasted.

Man, sucks that this thread spiralled into this.

There are a lot worse hobbies and passions to have than wanting to sit in a blind, enjoy the outdoors and have the opportunity to harvest a good buck.

Nobody judges anyone else on this forum for drug use, sexual perversions, or gaming, why does hunting get the negative press brunt?

no one is being negative against hunters here

Antler porn makes hunters horny.

lol

I dont understand the pleasure or reward of having the biggest antlers? Or even killing animals for pleasure… makes no sense to me

Stick it on the front of your truck!

this is all i thought of

Damn that is a huge rack. Need to get out to ILL. to hunt some time.
As far as I know IL hunting/gun laws are awful. Illinois residents must obtain a FOID card to purchase and own firearms. All handguns are outlawed to own/purchase/posses in chicago. Rifles are not allowed for hunting (state is too flat) only shotgun and handgun hunting. The deer season is only a few days long and it is slugs only, no buckshot. But of course if you know somebody with land or if you dont care about laws and permits then this is all irrelevant.

Not many people I have encountered REALLY kill for just pleasure anymore. Unless you count the pleasure of having something really tasty and cheap in your fridge/freezer. Although there is a lot of pleasure in the thrill of the hunt - seeing what may be up to several months of scouting, baiting (unless they find stupid chronic wasting disease), and waiting come to fruition. I guess I lied - there is a lot of pleasure in killing animals it’s just not usually that someone wants to kill something that they hunt, but a little bit of everything I guess. For me personally, I would say it’s the having something tasty in my freezer…

how is it hunting when all you do is sit in a deer stand and wait?

Would it be better if I sat on a stump? What about if I hid behind a shopping cart and snuck up on a shrink-wrapped package of pork chops? No malice intended, but I find it humorous that people think that hunting is as simple as putting a stand in a tree. Way more to it than that. Even under optimal conditions, the odds are tipped way in the favor of the deer.
Yes, way more hunters are killed by deer annually than vice versa.
(prepares for shitstorm)

Like almost 600 lbs of buffalo. =)

Maybe not deaths, but definitely damage from car accidents… haha let it rain!

Nice catch GV!!

Around 100 people a year die in deer related traffic deaths.
