Antiquity's Training Log: Kettlebell-focused regimen

Not many of us around this crazy. 150 is actually the most of done in a single session, and it was, dare I say, kinda fun. There’s definitely such a thing as a “burpee high” that rivals a runner’s high. Doing 50 pull ups after even feels like a cool down.

Can’t beat that burpee high

Although I have to say, having to go straight into the lodge where I’m staying and cook a dinner for my family, completely wiped out the burpee high.

It was more like a meth comedown

75 burpees on the beach
5x10 incline DB presses (80 lb DB’s, pleasantly surprised they had them at the hotel gym)
5x10 pull ups

45 minute hike

Yesterday we did a rafting trip with snorkeling around the west side of the island. Lots of waterfalls and caves. I’ve been walking out to the grassy area just above the sandy beach to get my burpees in. It makes it more tolerable to look out on the ocean and keep them going.

What’s always funny is how others in my group (it’s an extended family) have such strong opinions about working out and training. Despite being unlikely to be able to pull off a single burpee, they freely will say things like “Well, you should really be doing x, y, and z instead of what you’re doing. My doctor says that …” and so on. While perhaps I’m no professional, it’s patently clear my methods are far superior than anything they are dreaming up while convincing themselves that 15 minutes on the elliptical at the lowest level is the way to go. Also, diet thoughts and advice from others who look like they don’t skip many desserts. Apparently I should be taking a completely different tactic, though, according folks haven’t eaten to fuel or recover from a workout in decades.

100 1-arm KB swings

Notes: Had planned on pull ups, but the single spot to do them was taken so changed up and did KB swings instead. Liking these quick workouts with a ton of reps in a short amount of time.

250 Burpees

Notes: @ChongLordUno: I’m inching closer to 500. Although after that to think I’m only half way there makes 500 seem pretty daunting. Being on vacation, though, I fueled up afterwards with waffles and an iced latte.

225 burpees, 550 push ups

Done this way:
50 1 pump, 75 2 pump, 50 3 pump, 50 4 pump

Notes: Took about 30 minutes, done on an empty stomach. Burpees are where it’s at!

@ChongLordUno : Been checking out more Iron Wolf content. Thinking of giving his training style a go, which would align pretty well with where I have been drifting. Do you program based on his suggestions? I just watched one of his training/nutrition videos.

In essence, he suggests alternating training days something like:

Day 1: High rep burpees, 3 mile run
Day 2: Lots of pull ups, dips, etc… either just body weight or with a weight vest. Core work, too. Once you’re ready, add some burpees here too.

I was thinking of something like:

Strength days (3x per week):
100 burpees in the morning. Later on: 5’s PRO of one lift followed by either a weight vest or body weight circuit after.

Conditioning days (3 days per week):
High rep (250+) burpees + 3-5 mile steady state run.

I would plan to get in swings/snatches 2-3 times per week to either finish strength work or along with burpee work.

How are you designing things these days?

For the most part I’ve been adding on 25 burpees every week. The burpees are done every morning

I’m up to 275 this week however I found the Iron Wolf Foundational Fitness and gave that a whirl as I thought that maybe a more structured approach would fuel my gains.

That was 250 with 750 push ups. I thought it would be straight forwards however to be honest, as soon as I hit the Navy Seals, I realised I was in a world of pain.

But as you already know, you adopt that wolf attitude and work through the pain and horror.

That’s interesting re his programming

Right now for me it’s 6 days a week training

2/3 Strength Sessions per week
2/3 Conditioning Sessions daily
Burpees every day
Chins every day
Dips every other day

The only thing missing is the running which I am trying to fit in. Watch this space on that one

I’m really chuffed you’ve embarked on the Iron Wolf train at the same time as me my man. Our training journey this year has been closely aligned.

My biggest takeaway so far from the wolf is the mental aspect. I genuinely feel like my brain has become rewired.

The post burpee high, especially in the morning is insane. I think I’m addicted. You’ll know exactly what I’m talking about

Love that set up. Probably a good idea to get in some minimum number of in chins every day. Maybe like 50 even on non-strength training days.

You’ve done a great job of inspiring me and others to seek out new training styles and philosophies. I would never have heard of TB or Iron Wolf had you not brought these to TNation. Although I have friends that workout, I don’t have anything like this community here that really tries to push things to new limits.

50 air squats
155 kB swings

Notes: mostly wanted a pull-up/press workout but sprinkled in some other work.

Back in Cali. Gotta keep it going with some morning work:

200 burpees (150 1 pump, 25 2 pump, 25 3 pump).

Notes: I was doing burpees on grass during my vacation, and the lawn did a number on my feet and stomach. Any advice for burpee blisters? I put some socks on and powered through.

Strength work:

BSQ 5’s PRO: 115, 135, 155, 175, 205, 225 lbs

Weight vest circuit (32 lb vest):
100 push ups
100 KB snatches (16 kg bell)
50 pull ups
(done as 5 rounds of 20-20-10)

Notes: No time for morning work, as I had an early dental appointment and morning meetings. I’m playing soccer this afternoon, too, so didn’t want to push things too hard. I really like this set up of a single lift (done either 5’s PRO or with a widowmaker) followed by a WV circuit to get in some extra work. Really gets the heart rate going while getting in some quality strength work.

Morning work:

100 burpees
100 KB swings (36 kg bell)

Done: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the burpees and the opposite (down, then up) for the swings.

Notes: I played soccer yesterday evening, and I’m very sore from it. Even though I’ve been keeping up the conditioning, the stop-go-sprint-laterals of playing a sport are just a different thing. Did a bit of extra warming up this morning before jumping into the work.

I’ve also noticed that I enjoy these types of workouts (varying the reps, and adding another movement) more than just cranking out straight burpees. The reps creep up on you, and it’s just a bit more fun and less daunting than, say 200 straight burpees.

My plan is to make a yoga class at noon, and maybe crank out some pull ups in the afternoon. Tonight I’m having pizza (haven’t had it in weeks and weeks) so gotta earn it.

Are you in?

It’s tempting. I can’t imagine doing 300 burpees everyday (assuming I’d pick the intermediate). I know it’s less than 30 minutes, but still. I would do the pull ups with a weight vest, and add dips. The running would not be a problem.

Are doing it? As written? Even no sugar/alcohol*?

*I’ve actually not had a drink for nearly 5 weeks. It’s been awesome, and I have really noticed changes (leaner physique, steady energy, better mood). I would be a weekend-only drinker, but those heavy IPAs on Friday and Saturday (sometimes Sunday) led to poor food choices those evenings, less-than-optimal sleep, and the calories really add up (~300 calories a pint for many of them).

I’ll be going Intermediate on the burpees and advanced on the chins

Wolf says you can add stuff to it however you have to do his challenge as bare minimum

@ChongLordUno been watching your log. You have been making me want to incorporate burpees into my routine.

This July Challenge looks cool. Iron Wolfs channel is full of quality content. Thank you for that btw. Its always nice to have multiple resources of good content to use in different times of life and circumstances.

I think Ill add the beginner burpees to my current routine. 100 6c burpees a day. Im already doing 3 days of pullups with TB/Walrus. I also do TB conditioning 3 days a week so I wont add in the 3 days of running.

So really Im just adding 100 burpees a day. So not really the challenge but its something!

Started early and just knocked out 100 6 counts!
