Antiquity's Training Log: Kettlebell-focused regimen

Competition Recap.

16 men competing, with 10 in the Rx division (the one I competed in). My first WOD started at 8:45 am.

WOD 1.
11 min AMRAP
10 thrusters, 95 lbs
10 calories, row
2 toes-2-bar**
**add 2 reps each round

Me = 5 rounds + 12 T2B + 2 thrusters. = 144 total Reps.

Good for third place!!

About an hour later, did this:

WOD 2.
For time:
12 alternating DB snatches, 50 DB
12 burpee box jump overs, 24" box

Me = 7:07. Good for (yet again) third place.

Last one:

Bear Crawl for max weight within a 7 min time cap:
Start with bar on floor, dead lift to hang, then:

  • Hang power clean
  • Front squat
  • Shoulder to overhead, catch behind the neck
  • Back squat
  • Behind the neck press/jerk to overhead
  • Drop to hang
  • Repeat the sequence
  • Bar can’t touch the ground

Me = 155 lbs (failed at 175 lbs).

Overall: took third place. Officially my place was out of 16 men (10 in Rx, 6 in scaled). Won a pair of TYR trainers and a Rogue weight belt.

Here’s me getting the 155 lbs on the bear crawl. I had the 175 all the way through until the 2nd behind the neck press, and I stalled. So bummed. Thought I had that lift. My form does suck, though.

Notes: Gotta be pretty pleased overall. I was the oldest by 10 over years and competed well. I paced well on the first two workouts. Once again, my form holds me back. Notice on the bear crawl I rely too much on strict pressing rather than leg drives and catching in a deeper squat. This also comes into play on the thrusters.

I thought I might really catch back up on the burpee box jump overs coupled with the DB snatches. Being kinda short (5’9") is a hinder on the box jump overs. They were box facing, which means I had to position myself coming off the box to go into the burpee. Kept a good pace but never had it in me to really turn on the burners.

Really fun day overall! Can’t wait to compete again.

Damn impressive! It goes to show that age really is just a number. You killed it! Congrats on the 3rd place finish and the overall awesome day. You’re a beast!!

Thank you so much, @QuadQueen. It’s funny that we train so hard to compete in regional competitions for the sake of it, so it’s wonderful to share it with you and others. My wife and a friend of ours did come watch the first workout, but other than that it’s just me doing hard stuff just because. I appreciate the props!

And thank you for sharing! As a former Crossfitter, your log is one of my favorites. I come here for inspiration for my workouts, to see what level of suck you endured on any given day, and to be impressed by your most epic awesomeness. If we could review logs - yours would get a full 5 Star rating from me!

Proving age is just a number, how did you pull up? Likely recovered better than many others in that group too I suspect.

Excellent work and thanks for sharing mate!

7 am, Crossfit

Strength:
Front Squat: 4 x 3 x 195 lbs
S/S with seat vertical jumps: 4 x 5

WOD. Three rounds for time:
100 single unders
15 ring dips
100 single unders
9 seated on floor OHP; 75 lbs
100 ft farmer’s carry, 70 lbs x 2
Me = 10:32

Notes: Good workout to ease back into my training week. The strength was actually overhead squats, but I shifted to this. I’m still a bit too sore and achy to push those.

@raven78 : I was a bit sore yesterday, and just got in walking and food. Today felt just fine, though.
@simo74 : always appreciate the support!

I’m beat and haven’t slept great the last few days. I think those three max-efforts workouts within a few hours took a toll. Today I’m focusing on getting in 15K steps and getting in a couple mobility sessions.

I’ll be back at it tomorrow.

7:30 am, garage

Strength:
Bench Press: 5 x 5 x 205 lbs
Weighted Pull Ups: 5 x 5 x BW+18 kg
Prying goblet squats: 5 x 5 x 22 kg (just to get the stretch in)

WOD, for time:
10 rounds:
0.5 mile Airdyne
10, 10, 8, 8, 6, 6, 4, 4, 2, 2 Clean high pulls (from floor)
Weights: 135, 135, 155, 155, 185, 185, 205, 205, 225, 225 lbs
Time = 22:10

Notes: For the WOD, I may have written it in a confusing way. I’d ride 0.5 miles, then do 10 clean high pulls at 135 lbs for rounds 1 and 2, then add weight and for the next two rounds do 8 reps at 155 lbs and so on. I like these descending reps/increasing weight WODs.

Feeling much more energetic today. Slept well last night and the day off rejuvenated me. I’ll get in some accessory work and mobility after work.

Chipper WOD.

5 rounds:
1 mile Airdyne
60 meter farmer’s carry + 10 shrugs; 22 kg KBs
1 mile Airdyne
20 KB swings; 36 kg KB
Time ~ 39:30

Notes: Told myself last night I was going to make the Crossfit class unless the workout was high rep snatches. It was posted at 8 pm, and, of course, the workout was high rep snatches. Even when I’m feeling fully recovered and rested, those wreak havoc on my shoulders. Opted for this one instead. Definitely a toned down “just keep moving” workout, which worked just fine.

9 am, Crossfit

WOD:
Part 1:
21 - 15 - 9 - 5
Bar-facing burpees
Front squats, 95 lbs
Rest 90 s

Part 2:
1 mile run
Rest 90s

Part 3:
21 - 15 - 9 - 5
Bar-facing burpees
Push presses, 95 lbs

Later… 4 rounds of accessories:
25 Barbell shrug/rows; 135 lbs
25 Banded face pulls
12 Lat raises

Notes: The WOD was a good one. I contemplated just working out in the garage but I’m glad I went. It took about 8 minutes to finish each “part”, so about 28 minutes total time. The accessories were done leisurely for quality.

Thanks for checking in! I’m hoping to be an awesome grown up one day myself.

“Walrus/Murph training”

2.5 mile Airdyne
100 pulls ups
200 push ups
300 air squats
2.5 mile Airdyne
Time ~37:00

Notes: Went for a 2 mile walk, drank coffee and Surge, then did this. I was planning on a barbell-based workout, but I’m pretty sore.

Did the WOD this way:
Airdyne 2.5 miles in 7:07

Set the timer for 20 rounds of 65s each. Did 5 ring pull ups, 10 push ups, and 15 air squats in each interval. Worked out well. Only 60s would be doable if I really was pushing it, but this allowed for me to keep a strong pace without wiping myself out.

Second Airdyne was also done in 7:07 on the button.
