Let’s see in 10 years.
Is anyone an Immigration Policy expert?
When did we go from allowing only special groups, special timelines to seek asylum, to allowing anyone to come as an asylum seeker?
Who is in charge of that process? Does the President “pick and choose?” who fits into what category at his discretion? Or is it law that was written by Congress and can only be changed by Congress?
We’ve seen a Bi Partisan, Populist anti-Global trade opinion take hold in the US lately. With Democratic dudes starting to speak up, will we see a similar Bi Partisan, Strong Border attitude take hold soon?
The choice is and will always be to either stand for your principles, fold, or hope someone else fights your battles for you while you sit on the sidelines.
Aside from voting, which I’ve always done, I’ve stopped being politically neutral on social media. I now engage directly with my city council, school board and mayor, pestering them with the same type of questions I pester the liberals with on here. They don’t like me very much and I’ve probably lost some facebook “friends”, but we did recently have a really big win in the community, in no small part due to public outcry. The Ramada is not going to become a shelter for mentally ill homeless drug addicts, meaning my kid and his mom aren’t going to get 142 really bad neighbors in their presently very nice neighborhood.
I used to stay out of that stuff entirely so I wouldn’t upset my super-woke sister in law and jeopardize my relationship with my nieces, but that happened anyway.
My brother and his wife haven’t brought the girls to see me since I told her to stuff her vaccine policy right up her cooter, wherein she was shunning my step son because he was unvaccinated. She even uninvited him to the lake house gathering. It was pure madness mixed with narcissism, aka woke AF. I only see them if I make the trip now, and they rarely have much time for me.
That’s what having family in cults is like.
Ya, I get it. My dad’s side is pretty liberal and my mom’s side is MAGA. Times are definitely strange.
*I’ll just note, you’re doing what needs to be done to effect change. This is what I mean. As bleak as you see our society you are now involved when you weren’t before. That’s what I mean by people will always create change. Individuals rise to the challenges of a time and always will.
I wrote a letter to Governor Hogan in 2021, did it do anything? No, but I did it anyway. We also pulled our kids out of the public school system. Do I want to? Fuck no, but we did anyone and it costs us a lot of time and money. You do what you have to do.
This is the problem. It’s not his principles but the principles of a free nation. These are true classical liberal values. However, we are creating a generation that does not believe in free speech or diverse opinions, regardless of their push for diversity.
So it won’t be about standing up for principles when those principles no longer exist.
If this happens it will be because we failed to stand up for them when we had the chance.
I know part of it was when illegal immigration advocates added the weaponized term racist to their argument. In places like NYC, racist is such a scary word that it shuts down any logical discussion.
This is a short clip from my class earlier today. Out of respect for my professor, I tried to crop it as best I could to avoid showing his face and name (he has a Tedx Talk on YT, posts on Twitter, and publishes articles and books, so I don’t think it’s a huge concern, but still). The lecture was about Jefferson and his views on religion. I was only going to include the very short portion where he addressed my generation’s woes, as it seemed relevant to the thread, but decided to include a minute or so before and after that as I felt some of the things he was saying might be interesting to @twojarslave, @usmccds423, and others. A couple of things actually made me laugh a little to myself in class. I know a 4-minute video doesn’t explain much, but it’s short enough that it’s not something you have to schedule time to listen to.
@BrickHead - again, short video, very little context, but you might be interested in this:
EDIT: I skip the YT video he showed, as the sound quality was terrible.
I’m glad this man is teaching this way. What’s the class?
I’ll check that out. Thanks for the tag.
American Political Thought I. 1600s to pre-Civil War.
He is probably the best teacher I have ever had. I’m a history major, but take some political science classes as the area is interesting to me, and the professors in both fields have been incredible. I’m kind of lucky to have stumbled into the department. It wasn’t what I planned on studying. It’s got a reputation for great faculty among the rest of the school’s departments. Most of them range from (surprisingly for a public university) quite right leaning to not-woke. Funnily enough, as I reflect on my time here, I think I’ll graduate more conservative (on some issues) than when I arrived, due to what I’ve been made to read and listen to. That sure isn’t what college is known for these days, haha.
Who are you replying to?
@jcpjcp I will ask you the same question I asked the other posters with your sentiments. Maybe you will be the towering intellect who can explain my own stupidity to me.
If Churchill and FDR are losers, as you suggest, who are the winners? Who do you think has the right ideas about government and society?
Sounds like you have a good professor.
Has Zelensky ever seen combat?
Does everyone agree that the Mayor of Kyiv is pretty cool?
I’ve been a fan of him and his brother for a long time. Cool? Yes. Great boxers and great minds, for sure. Good public servants, free of corruption? I can’t say either way. I just don’t know enough about what’s going on over in the Ukraine.
The best teachers are the ones who make you stop and think. Really think, not just about what you’re trying to accomplish in the classroom, but what you’re trying to accomplish. You are on a good path, young warrior.
