An Over 50 Lifter

I’m going to change up some parts of my work-out. I suspect that it will be a long while before I take up Judo again, if ever, given my age and the amount there is to do to get a handle on Wado Ryu.

When you say this do you mean formal training or totally? Are you talking about just judo or all your martial training?

I plan to keep lifting, even if I don’t do a formal return to Judo.

Wado Ryu is an atemi-waza based JuJitsu style that joined with Shotokan in the early days and then split off over kumite (they were for it). That debate is over, everyone does kumite.

However, they have a fairly huge kihon compared to some styles. I just learned a new variation on Makikomi (the throw my avatar is doing) the other night.

I plan to keep with Wado for quite a while. And I plan to keep lifting, I’m making my major set each week.

And yes, I’m training formally with a Wado club. My wife and I both are. I bought her a new house for our anniversary, she bought me a new gi. We both worked out tonight.

I’ll be lifting tomorrow.

rotator cuff work is good to keep in.

I’m so glad that the house sale and purchase went so quickly and smoothly for you.

Planning to up your training frequency if the judo is going away?
I’d doing Wado as much as I can (without cheating the wife out of her work-outs) – which means 4-5 times a week on a good week (less when I’m out of town or something similar) and lifting on my HIT program once a week. The off-cycle lifts are slipping out.

I’ve been away from Judo, hoping to get the rotator cuffs fixed for a couple-three years now. I’m glad I started with the Wado.

The house situation went really fast. 30 days ago I didn’t even know I was going to be looking for a new house. Now, here I am with both contracts signed and funded (with lease backs to the end of the months), contracts with landscapers, etc. and a new dishwasher for the new place in my garage

I’m in awe at how cheap homes are in Plano, Texas.

I had really thought that karate as a work-out activity was broken for me. Breaks kind of tells the story.

Except, first I started lifting, now I’m in the 170s (down from 265), and amazingly, now I can do karate again, even if mentally I can’t quite face Shotokan.

(as an aside, as soon as we finish the move and I get my passwords out of storage, I’m updating the bengoshi waza part of my website. the computer I had all the ftp software, etc. on, got the files trashed by a virus my dearest wife managed to get by the protective software and it killed the ghost back-up as well as the system.

Luckily I had all the data saved {except for all my old e-mails} so I didn’t lose all my photographs, documents, etc.)

I’m glad to be back. I’ve been in karate on and off since 1970, earned through brown belt several times in different styles, won a lot of tournament prizes back in the 80s.

Since I don’t plan to get in any fights (if I did I’d buy a gun), and enjoy the training with my wife, I’m pleased.

But I love lifting, and am going to keep it up.

Did a lot of catching up here, took awhile. If you need a pet for the new place? I’m pretty well trained, in most ways…

Someone said “good things for good people”. That’s dam right I’d say. Glad I got back in touch with your thread, and keep up the fighting arts (it keeps us young I think).
Thanks for the kind thoughts. I’ve already had a female attorney ask us about adopting her.

In the process of moving, finished a jury trial this week, had a “functional” training moment this week while moving.

The young men from church helped me move my daughter’s fort from one back yard to the other. One kid said he weighed 105 lbs, the other kid said couldn’t be that light.

So, I picked the one kid up and curled him, then did curls with the one who said he weighed 175 to compare the two.

ROFL

Ok, I’ve let my lifting slide with the move and with starting Wado Ryu. Today I was going to change that. Go to a tournament then hit the gym and lift before I got home and ran errands for the wife.

Of course I haven’t been to a karate tournament for over twenty years. I’m in what the AAU calls the “executive” category (just like T-Nation has an over thirty-five lifter category, the AAU has an over thirty-five competitor category).

They put me in novice kata (up to purple belt) as I know only one solid Wado Ryu kata, and I end up in the “intermediate” sparring division. My wife’s only advice had been “avoid the really tall guys.”

So, does an almost seven foot tall brown belt (half brown, half black belt, whatever that means) count as “really tall?”

One of the people who I gave a ride said when she saw the match start she thought “this is going to end very badly for Mr. Marsh.”

I won the division 2 1/2 points to a half point in that final match. Now I almost collapsed while taking my gear off as I ran out of juice getting ready for the division bow out and medals, I had really given it my all, but I won novice kata (I know, not a big thing) and intermediate (below black belt) sparring.

I ended up eating lunch and realized I’m too wiped to lift today, I’m going to catch the weights Monday.

But it was a good day. I showed those thirty year olds something  Luckily it wasn’t me passing out, which would have happened if I’d had one more round.

My wife worked a hard 24 shift, so she missed the tournament, but she laughed when she heard that I had not been able to avoid the really tall guys.

Good on you Elaikases! Nice comeback into the tournament world!

Congratulations!

Not a big thing? Well done. Great comeback.

Thanks for the comment.

I have to tweak Soldog, he told me Wado Ryu wasn’t that different. Their Gyaku zuki has about six to eight more inches of range.

I scored with it seven times yesterday, once I noticed the extra reach  Think what I would have done if he hadn’t been holding out on me …

It’s all in the execution…

(I guess I meant not that different from what I had practiced years ago.)

WOW…congratulations E! That is a BIG deal.

Need a little cardio do we;) Great job, they’ll be looking for you next time. Better get back to work.

Once again great job!

Nice going E. I don’t know what those Gyaku whatsis things are, but it’s clear that you used your smarts and experience to win.

I need a lot more cardio. That is why I find your posts so inspiring.

Nice work Elaikases!

Well, furniture is all moved in, almost every box unloaded, and I realized last time I hit the weights was 2/14 … so, I decided if Cappy can lift in spite of hideous problems, a little tendon pull in my left hand didn’t count and I had to face the music.

Lost about two months of work from being off a month. I’m hoping to make up the weight faster and to be back where I was by the end of April.

I’m glad I got out, I could hear the knots pop in my shoulders like popcorn. I’m amazed how much a difference the weights make in the amount of pain I feel. I need the lifts and the stretches.

Also got invited to attend sparring classes at my new club now

The tournament is last week’s news, but it turns out a number of people thought I was going to get killed in the match where I won first place.

I’m glad I didn’t.

Now for the Rhadi Ferguson 30x30 challenge.

And, all kidding aside, my thanks to Soldog who pointed me right.

quite welcome E! It’s good to see you back at it…

Awesome posts! great job… I second the welcome to the Old Farts Club! LOL. .always love saying that… can remember back in the day when you looked at others and thought “hmm, just another old fart”! Now we are the Old Ones! LOL… look forward to readin more of your posts!

You don’t have to be over 50 to injure your rotator cuffs. I’ve hurt mine several times. I’m 44 and have been back at the gym for about 5 years now. The key for me staying healthy is not trying to go too heavy. I’m in good shape, not great shape.

I go up to 205 on benchpress and do 3 sets of 10-12 reps with no issues. Took me about 3 years to realize this is a good weight for me. Rarely (once every couple of months), I will get a spotter and do a heavy day on benchpress; with strict form. Heavy be going to about 275 for 2-3 reps.

Then I will not do any upper body work for 3-4 days. So far, it has worked for me. My main focus now is form and trying to reduce my bodyfat %.
