An Over 50 Lifter

Not skinny, a lean mean Santa machine. Well old timer another winter is upon us. A time to sit back and reflect on all the things you’ve accomplished. A time to be greatful for all those who mean so much to you.

I appreciate all the support, encouragement and supportive advise you have shown me. I hope to be able to return some of it in kind. Until then I wish that the best of 2008 is the worst of 2009 for you and all of yours.

Let us stay strong and continue this journey we are on. Together we can do more than we can alone.

Mery Christmas & A Happy New Year.

Thank you both Streamline and ecogenx.

Made my Saturday lifts, I’ll post that log along with today’s after I lift tonight.

Made the lift, then missed new years eve, but lifted today.

Still feel a pump, enjoyed vacation, survived the traveling and driving about, glad to be back.

Weird. Your 1-3-09 post is missing.

Ah well. Lookng forward to seeing your next training sessions.

Didn’t have much to say on 1-3-09  It is back now. I’m not sure what causes the disappearing posts.

Got out and made my Tuesday lifts tonight, after missing last week.

Hip Abduction 350lb x 16 reps … -3 reps
Hip Adduction 340 lb x 11 reps… -5 lb, +3 reps

Shoulder cable flys, 55 lb x 12 reps each shoulder, same as last time.

Dip Machine 245 lb x 8 reps … same

Seated Row 225 lb x 8 reps … -2.5 lb
Bodywt Dips 11, -1 from last time.

Cable Curl 140 lb x 10 reps, -2.5 lb
Face Pull Seated Cable Row
180lb x 8 reps, -5 lb, -2 reps
That one was hurting.

Abdominal board
+25 lb x 10 reps, -5 lb

Deadlifts
Only got 4 the first set. Then realized I had misloaded the bar (forgot the bar had weight you know) so it was 210 lb instead of 170 lb. Got 4 more at 170.

All in all, not too bad for missing two workouts in December. I really lose ground if I miss a week, while I otherwise make slow progress each week.

Made two Wado-ryu workouts. Wife likes the place, bought herself a new gi. Think we go full time with them next week.

Need to rearrange my lifting schedule to work things out.

I’ve read others say they were missing some posts. Great workouts E!

Did you buy a new Gi as well?

The wife did. I still have a Juka Bronze in great shape. It has lasted the ten years since I last worked out in better shape than I did in some ways, though my Century Iron is now too big for me

I’ll eventually buy a new one when this one shows some sign of wear.

Did my Tuesday cycle at 5:00 p.m. tonight.

I think the Saturday cycle is going to move to Tuesday mornings at 6:00 a.m. and the Tuesday cycle to Friday mornings at 6:00 a.m.

Adductor
350 lb x 14 reps, -2 reps

Abductor
340 lb x 12 reps, +1 rep

Shoulder Cable Fly
57.5 lb x 12 reps, +2.5 lb

Dip machine
245 lb x 8 reps, tied PR

Seated Row, strict form
227.5 lb x 8 reps, +2.5 lb

Body Weight Dips
13 reps, +2 reps

Cable Biceps Curl
142.5 lb x 10 reps, +2.5 lb PR

Face Pull Seated Cable Row
182.5 lb x 10 reps, +2.5 lb, +2 reps

Abdominal Board
+25 lb x 10 reps … same

dropped the deadlifts, back to the Back Extension machine
330 lb x 9 reps, same as last time on the BE machine (November 11, 2008).

It looks like I might be moving, and stuck with a gym without an olympic bar, so I’m getting adjusted.

Pleased though, all in all, it went well.

More karate next week. Paid for the first month, signed the forms, joined the dojo.

Good on you Elaikases!

Hope the move put you out of the Dojo as well as the gym…

The move would only be twelve miles. Right now I’m a five minute walk from the gym, about a ten minute walk from the Dojo.

The city has a number of gyms, two that would be much closer to where I might end up moving.

I like the Dojo, a good crew, patient with me. I used to win karate tournaments at the brown belt level, especially in kata. Now my flexibility is a couple of years away from that.

So it is just me and my old white belt, looking a little frayed after all these years. But it lets me work out with my wife

Thanks for the good wishes.

No Olympic bar? And it’s still called a gym?

Just kidding. There’s a lot taht can be done with dumbbells and smith machines which can be absolutely grueling…

Awesome!Trainig hard and steady will bring the results. Keep hammering away.

I was looking back and realized just how far my curls have come and some other things. Jimmy T, you are right, the steady training is amazing how it adds up over time.

Actually, the ones without Olympic Bars are called “recreation centers” … sigh, and while mine has a smith machine, cable machine, dumbells, and a couple olympic bars – and no crowds (there were five of us in there Saturday afternoon and I confess I felt a little crowded), the others are not as full service.

They just doubled the price, to $120 a year (though I got a full year on the 60 a year price before I have to pay the 10 dollar a month price raise).

The one down the street from my house must be the best kept secret in town for weights.

Over a thousand pounds of plates, dumb bells go up to 110 or so, though they think the smith machine fills the need for a squat rack for guys to do curls in

(Actually, I’ve never seen anyone doing curls in it).

Good for you and your wife! (I’m assuming she’s joining as well?) Keep us posted!

Cappy

Cappy, yes, we chose the place based on the wife’s approval. We made the work-out together tonight. Our daughter at home is going to join later this week.

Wado Ryu started as a school of Jujitsu and then merged with Funakoshi for a while, then split with Shotokan over kumite.

It is a great place and I like the people. Most of it is easy, though I had trouble with the breakfalls. I kept having trouble not rolling but just falling.

Did what used to be the Saturday work-out after Wado-Ryu tonight.

Still feeling it.

Other than that, I need a good jitsu, was just informed that for our anniversary the wife wants a new house.

Heaven help me, I just said yes.

Old house is on the market now. Pictures at http://adrr.com/house/

New house looks like we have reached a deal tonight after looking at it three days ago.

Made my shifted lifts, they went well.

Neutral grip pull-ups
-17.5 x 8 reps (one less than target)

Woodchop
140 lb x 9 reps … really felt it.

Shoulder Press
115 lb x 9 reps

Bench Press
130 lb x 8 reps, one less than target

Rotary
55 lb x 10 for each of the four shoulder rehab rotations (two left, two right).

Body weight squats
x12 just warming up on this.

Done right after a Wado Ryu work-out.

I like the new club all in all.

Moved lifts went well. New log sheets, some small modifications.

Things are really busy. Bought a house, sold a house (gee, thing hadn’t been on the market 24 hours when we got an offer at our asking price).

Busy.

Today’s my wedding anniversary. Since I bought the wife a new house, in return she is having us celebrate with a karate workout.

Happy anniversary E. Way to hit a homer on the house. sounds like you and the wife are going to have a lot of fun!

EDIT Now go out and buy some brand new solid hardwood furniture so you can help out some poor sawmill guys!! Yes its a shameless plug…
