She was convicted because they didn’t sequester the jury so they were exposed to all the media hype and tabloid evidence. Add to that Italy has a low level, sort of simmering resentment of the US, add to that she behaved inappropriately by doing cartwheels at the police station and was photographed kissing her boyfriend outside the crime scene. Coupled with what Maximus said about the interrogation where they coerced her to say how she thought it might have happened then they called it a confession.
The rest of it yes, the resentment I don’t think so. When I was there I didn’t experience any of that. Everybody was really nice and it isn’t that they held any opinion about America, they really didn’t care. They did think it was funny that we would get fired if they found porn at work here in the U.S. and were surprise we couldn’t smoke in the office. But they aren’t all fire concerned about the U.S. over there. They know it’s there and all, it’s just they don’t care. That’s a myth like ‘Everybody speaks English’. Bullshit, they speak Italian. Next closest would German, English is low down on the totem pole. If I wanted to eat, I had to order in Italian. But the food was awesome…That I got to hand it. Finding meat is murder, pasta and tons on wine, no problem. Wine came by the half-liter or liter, screw the glass…
I sure could be wrong, I’ve never been there. I’m curious, what was their news coverage like, how did they portray America in the media? I ask this because, like I called it a slow simmer, I think they may be a little two faced. Act one way to you but be thinking very differently.

They covered America like we cover like we cover other countries. Like just another place. Some lady even thought I was from Spain because I was using Spanish to get by, or mixing it with really bad Italian. There is one incident they did cover and it was front page news was the Elian Gonzales thing. The picture of the SWAT guy looking like he was pointing the gun at the kid? Yeah, that was big there. I saw somebody reading it on the bullet train, I just did a face palm.
Other than that, they have no real reason to hate us. We did bail them out in WW2, but other than that they are good.
Now, I was in the north. I lived in Milan. The people there don’t look Italian. They have a vast range of hair, eye and skin tones, just like here. They tended to dress well, but the older people weren’t hip on the bathing thing. The young people were though. I had a little fan club at the local Beiriera. I was like ‘Norm’ on cheers, because most week nights I went there. I would sit out side and watch people, smoke and drink. Chat with the waitresses and occasionally others who would be curious about me when they heard me speak (No I never fucked any of them). Milan is not a big tourist spot, so there actually aren’t a lot of foreigners unless they are working there.
This was my local church Il Duomo. It’s the 4rth largest Cathedral in the world and was obviously built in the middle ages. The reason I say obvious is that all the statues and ornamentation was Saints in the process of being killed. This was the center of town.
Dear God don’t drive there, they are nuts. Two lanes can hold three to four cars and a couple of scooters. If there is room, they’ll take it. You need to know the thickness of your paint because it makes a difference.
For all it’s problems, I do really like Italy.
I’ll stop rambling.
