There’s a school district in Texas that hired a security/defense company to teach it’s students how to respond to an armed attacker in the school. Good idea!
The security company taught the students to throw objects at the attacker and try to disarm him as quickly as possible. Another good idea!
The school district would rather the students sit on their hands and get shot in the face. Shitty idea!

It seems to me that this is the sort of attitude that lead to thousands of unneccessary deaths on Sept. 11. Airline passengers had always been taught that the best way to survive a hijacking was to sit down and shut up, so that’s what they did.
The difference here being that a gunman in a school is almost always going to be shooting, so the smart thing to do is to take him down and disarm him. Unfortunately, that would be teaching kids to be violent, so I guess in the end it’s better for them to sit down, shut up, and eat their lead.
I’d be happy if I was a member of the school that people were being taught to disarm armed intruders. Increases my chance of survival. They can all risk they’re life like they were taught to, while I run like hell or hide somewhere safe.

I never thought about it that way, but now that you mention it, trying to defend my life, as well as the lives of my fellow students really is exactly the same as imitating a fictional tv character. I suppose if everyone at Columbine had used the “run and hide” method, then Kleibold and Harris would have had nobody to shoot at, at which point they would have to have killed themselves knowing that they were total failures at everything except suicide.

I don’t mean to be argumentative, but are you really suggesting that the school system is telling the kids, “if a bully approaches you, don’t block or dodge, let him punch you”? That sounds far-fetched. I do agree that they are trying to pussify boys.
“Bully-free” schools are the current trend in my area, which teaches non-violent ways to deal with emotions and differences. While I find this approach valuable, they have gone overboard such that I get phone calls when my son pushes somebody on the playground. I get fed-up with it, but they don’t want to hear that that’s what 7-10 year old boys do.
I was never a bully, nor did I get picked on, but they did serve a purpose when I was a kid. Bullies got a lot of people started in weight training. They act as playground career advisors too by letting the weaker kids know early on that they should stay indoors and study. They are also fun to see at reunions because they usually never amounted to much.
Unfortunately, I think a lot of the kids who got picked on became lawyers and politicians and are now taking their revenge on bullies at the expense of everyone.

Yeah, they need to spank kids asses like they did in the old days. Kids aren’t afraid of consequence anymore. It’s political correctness B.S. Lessons of life are not learned. It is not a Rep./Dem. issue, it is a disipline issue. The teachers hands are tied and kids run all over them. It hurts the good students who want to learn. The public schools are beyond repair, UNLESS disipline is introduced back into the system. Putting a kid in timeout is as useless as trying to catch fart bubbles. Failed parenting is also to blame. Why disipline a child when you can just feed him adderol and claim he has ADHD to shut him up. Also the deadbeat dads that refuse to take care of their kids and the so called moms that have kids to get a welfare check aren’t helping much either. But I say instead of blaming our failures on the actual sources, lets do the popular thing and blame Bush, because if I hold him accoutable to all my problems I don’t have to be.

[/quote]The reason i mentioned the politico part is,generally when i see a thread about schools people say it’s because of the liberal thinking in schools that we have these problems.I just wanted to nip that in the bud.I think it’s a lot of lazy people not wanting to handle the problem,as long as it’s not happening to them or their children.

Teachers unions are a big contributer, but lack of disipline is the biggest. You know why I am not dead, on drugs, on welfare, or in jail. Because I minded my mother who taught me the difference between right and wrong and a work ethic. You know why I minded my mom? BECAUSE IF I DIDN’T SHE WHIPPED MY ASS! She didn’t go to the doctor wondering why I didn’t behave, she didn’t have to, I behaved or else, I got my ass whipped. Guess what, it worked! The same thing also happened in school, if I acted up my principal or teacher paddled my rear, it worked! There was no timeout, that crap doesn’t work, look at kids today, they need their little asses whipped. Since the paddle has been taken out of the schools hand, the public schools have went in the toilet.

No thanks I will pay for my own. I love the “free healthcare” gimmick though. Raise taxes to pay for it, then call it free. I can’t wait to lose my job when they make it manditory for owners to pay employee healthcare. That is going to cripple small business employees because the owners are just gonna let em go, they have to in most cases, it just makes economic sense, but the good ole democrats are for the working man. So I guess welfare recipients are the working man. Save us from this madness Fred Thompson.
I am for Bobby Knight as the new secretary of education. He could clean up our schools and teach those smartass kids to mind. Achievement scores would definitely be higher.
