Alice In Chains

“Nutshell” on the MTV unplugged sends chills down my spine. That and it gets me jacked up.

I’m going to pick up this cd today. I heard it was really good. Only been out for a month or so.

I used to have AIC dirt and it and was one of my favorite albums. My fav 3 albums were soundgarden-superunknown, Nirvana-nevermind, AIC-dirt. Every song on every one of those cds kicked ass. Jar of flies was good too.

You got me wrong has always been a big favorite of mine by Alice.

I’m not a musician so can’t speak to it from that perspective and can only say if music hit my hears and hits me right I dig it. And, I dug and still dig a lot of stuff from Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice, and Soundgarden. Not all of each bands work mind you but, a lot of each group mentioned. Black by Pearl Jam is another favorite and at times I can still throw in Nevermind and jam it from end to end.

Yes, the new singer for Alice sounds like L. S. big time.

On a side note I was listening to a Black Sabbath with Dio greatest hits CD on a long road trip yesterday and digging on Mob Rules and Neon Nights pretty fucking good stuff to hear again after a long time.

Those two albums were awesome and didn’t get the respect they deserved imo. I saw Dio years ago and my friends and I could not believe the power of Dio’s voice in such a little body. Incredible. Trust me on this one dedicated…pass on the Ian Gillan Sabbath, accept maybe Zero The Hero, that was okay, the rest, awfull.

I read somewhere L.S. was dead for a week before someone found him…seems like he shut everyone out at the end. He also thought re-hab was a scam. Spent tons of cash and he kept having to go back. He figured why spend the money if it isn’t working.

Yeah agreed, Mob Rules is the perfect combo of guitar and vocal power, just a kick ass battle song. He did/does have one powerful voice.

The new singer just makes me think of AIC as a cover band, effectively soiling my fond memories of the them. Anybody ever listen to Mad Season? It was a fantastic side project of Staley’s, highly recommended if you’re even the least bit into AIC.

Yeah Man, River of Deciet… Good stuff

Incidentally, if you haven’t heard this yet, “Them Crooked Vultures” is, in my mind, “Grunge 2.0”.

What’s old is new again.

The lineup:

David Grohl, Drums (Nirvana)
John Paul Jones, Bass (Led Zeppelin)
Josh Homme, Guitar/Vox (Queens of the Stone Age).

New Fang

I remember where I was when “Man In the Box” came on MTV for the first time. I was completely mesmerized by it.

Alice in chains… so awesome. Never will get tired of them. Rain when I die & Dirt are two songs I listen to probably every single day. Couldnt imagine listening to them without Layne, though I will have to listen to the new album out of curiosity.

I’m SO glad you mentioned Sabbath with Dio! I love it more with Dio than Ozzy. Dio was an incredible singer. The best Sabbath/Dio album is the underrated “Dehumanizer”. Effin’ awesome, angry and HEAVY! I can email you tracks if you’re interested.

I noticed that the aging Dio is no longer able to soar as high as he used to (he’s like 65 or something). So now the band has down-tuned a full step for their shows.

For comaprason, here’s a song where Lane Staley is singing most of it.

I like Dio but I like Ozzy more. THe Dio days aren’t even memorable to me.

And no way the new singer is as good as Layne, he had that grit in his voice and that uniqueness that I don’t think is easy to find.

I have heard some of Alice in Chains’ new material and I am a big fan. Duvall doesn’t quite sound like Layne, but the music still sounds like Alice in Chains.

Here is a song that nobody has mentioned yet. I think the combination of Layne Staley and Mark Lanegan is awesome.

Cool brother, shoot me a PM if that suffices.

I’ll be honest, I thought the whole Grunge thing was an absolute low point in music history, [/quote]

Of course it was. The nature of things is that something is born, grows to full maturity, and then ultimately dies. Why should rock n’ roll be any different? I am sure that you agree that despite all of its flaws grunge was better than everything that came after. Rock was on its way out, its message having played itself out. Deadhead stickers on a Cadillac and all that. By the early 1990’s what was considered rock? Guys with huge hair, tight pants and sequins playing purely for the decadent fun of it all (drugs, cool cars, chicks, whatever).

While I am a big fan of a lot of these bands, I see how this was also untenable as they had only a tiny bit of artistic merit which was no longer true to the original message of independence, rebellion, etc which brought this genre to the spotlight 30 years earlier and wouldn’t hold people’s attention. Imagine Nero (Caesar) fiddling while Rome burned for an apt metaphor. Grunge was sort of a last shot of adrenaline. The last strength of old age- a bit of a renaissance before the curtains close. Of course it came and went quickly. How long could we listen to teenage angst and take it seriously? But it was beautiful in its time and place.

After grunge what was there left but the death of rock and roll? If rock’s birth was Elvis shaking his hips and merely behaving unconventionally, and the rest of the power of the movement was in its ability to challenge existing authority, its decadence freewheeling with no regard for purpose and ignoring long term ramifications, then surely its death would be rebellion for the sake of rebellion. Shock for its own sake. Enter Marilyn Manson to bring rock n’ roll to its logical conclusion. Everyone after are either “survivors” (those who still live and play even after their sub-genre lost popularity) or pretenders to the throne claiming legitimacy through rock’s past success and legacy.

(Now everyone welcome me to the forum, this is my first post)

Welcome, just found out today that dio has stomach cancer. All of us will probably wish him a speedy recovery.

A few more weeks and you could’ve avoided an 09 join date. Oh well it’s not that bad, welcome.

I don’t know if I agree with you on this one, though. I know I made a similar post about grunge, but I don’t really want to limit rock’s appeal/credibility to it’s message and what it stands for [if that’s what you were doing-if not correct me]. There are a lot of big music and non-music factors that play into this as well.

AIC is still awesome. They still pulled off that haunting harmony and just overall sound which is what AIC is pretty much known for. They did that and I’m happy. The new album has some great songs on it, I love this one.

I don’t think they can ever top Dirt but to me it’s the next best thing.
