Good to see you back man, sorry to hear about the tough times. If you need anything, you know how to reach me.
Good to see you back!
Mental health struggles shouldn’t be seen as an excuse, mate. Glad to hear you’re making positive changes.
Nice to see you back mate. Remember that not every session needs to kick you in the ar$e. Just get it some daily work and over time the rest will take care of itself.
Good to hear from you again! I know you didn’t come on here to overshare or pour your thoughts into a diary entry, but sometimes that can be beneficial to others. The little you shared struck a chord with me because my priorities are a bit out of whack, too.
On the lifting front, don’t be afraid to be a minimalist. I’ve been looking at Wendler’s first 5/3/1 book for inspiration and it hasn’t disappointed. He even cites an example of a guy going in and hitting the 5/3/1 PR set for bench only and then leaving the gym because he was busy that day. Jim still called it a good session because he hit his strength work. I think it’s hard for us to see that sometimes. We tend to adopt the all or nothing mentality - a full workout or no workout.
Hope your back heals up and doesn’t give you any more trouble!
Nice to hear from you mate.
I’m trying to adjust to a similar mentality. My “strength work” is a basic progression on a main lift. My “hypertrophy work” is assistance work. My conditioning is also separate. My skill work is also separate. My flexibility is also separate. I don’t have to squeeze it all into every session: as long as i do one of them, the session is a success.
A lot of working men come into the gym on their lunch breaks, window cleaners, builders, plumbers, anything. All they do is 3 or 4 sets of a main movement and then off they go. There’s huge value to doing this kind of stuff… and everything is better than doing nothing.
I like the single minded focus of it. I’ve lost track of the times i’ve tried to do “a bit of everything” in a session and found myself achieving nothing except losing sleep.
Hey all flying update, I’ve been on annual leave from both jobs so been doing everything I can to ensure kids get the attention they deserve (school holidays) do been to the forests walking, been to the beach paddle boarding (first time going in choppy water, very different experience, I knelt down then entire time the kids were in the board and when they were off I went solo standing and bailed so much!), hired a hot tub for them and spend a fair bit of time in that, went to a place that was kind of like an escape room theme park which was pretty awesome they’re a great age for it and loved it, stupid amount of walking though, (went to an actual theme park a could of weeks ago) just had a blast, great memories made. Also managed to squeeze in this:
Ohp: 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 62.5kg X 1, 50kg X 5 X 3 sets
Which is funny given the fact that I hadn’t seen the above conversation. I wanted to get some accessories in but higher priorities took place. Looking forward to squeezing in some deadlifts, hopefully tomorrow!
Thanks for the conversation above I have read it all and really do appreciate this community!
Oh also I did end up weighing 189lbs - skinny!
Life got more stressful, painful and traumatic, for me and the whole family, not something I can’t discuss online, but a deeply unpleasant event/experience that isn’t really finished with yet, but I came out to lift.
Deadlifts (convo): 60, 80, 100, 120kg X 5, 90kg X 10, 2 (something in my back shifted and I’d normally push through but being extra cautious!)
Chins/dips: 8/8 X 3 sets
Took way too long, feel like I’m back after suffering flu, even low reps and weight feel like massive amount of exertion and make me feel nauseous. Need to build some more work capacity and endurance, will add some low level cardio back in and bring sandbags back in to start sessions.
Everything alright fella?
Certainly been better, but a wise person in here often gives the proverb: this too shall pass, and that’s true here, just in the thick of it for the time being.
I hope that wise person isn’t me, i’m an idiot, i watched every episode of Game of Thrones on purpose.
You’ll come through this mate, you know where i am if you need anything.
Sorry to hear that Alex. Sounds like you’re dealing with some tough shit over there. I hope things will turn around for you. We’re here for you if you need to let off some steam
Not to get off track … but what’s wrong with that? Well outside of how shit the ending was.
Exactly. And there’s nothing wrong with getting hit by a car, outside of the injuries.
It’s pretty bad for the car too though…
Sorry to hear things are tough right now. Here for you mate.
Sorry that things are not going well.
Kudos for not giving up
