Also collarbone. I do require some warm ups and an active pulling down to achieve that if the weight is too light though.

Regarding t&g vs. resting the bar: I personally find touch and go easier, so I pause on the collarbone a lot.

In that case, I think I should probably throw in some touch and go reps for good measure :joy:

What are your thoughts on tough and go deads? I find them a LOT harder than normal reps

I wouldn’t limit myself to one or the other. Both have their place.

I never do touch and go deadlifts myself. Feels very weird to me at this point. I’m not a good deadlifter by any means, so it’s probably better to direct that question to Pwnisher, who deadlifts a lot more and is a fan of t&g.

Edit: One additional point would be that t&g is never allowed in our competitions.

Agree. I was thinking of doing one or two of my back off sets touch and go

I find it hard to get into a rhythm and the bounce is jarring

A bounce isn’t necessarily part of t&g. Especially if you lift with metal plates

Touch n go requires a controlled lowering like a squat. You can’t just go limp and let the weight drop.

I’ve been thinking about something since last night (carrying on my thoughts from @tinkertailortanker 's log) I finished watching WSM 2020 yesterday (better late than never) and it reminded me of something and kind of awakened something in me. The reason I got into lifting was Strongman - at about 10 I had a plastic sand filled weight set and a wobbly fold out bench - pretty sure I just hung clothes off it and fantasised about being strong (probably only ever lifted one a year whilst watch WSM!).

But the reality is that was the beginning of what has been on and off a life long passion, lifting stuff, so watching that I felt a something, a mixture of regret at a childhood fantasy unfulfilled and a realisation that my training still doesn’t really reflect much of what I picture in my mind.

Moving forward then, I’m going to keep my general goals because they do reflect some of what I want, but in terms of deadlift, I’m going to learn to pull conventional without hurting my back (I’m sure this is possible!) but I’m not abandoning my goal of a 250kg deadlift this year - I’m going to switch it to Trap bar deadlift, that I can do and I’m confident of hitting a 250kg TBDL by the end of the year, if not before. I will finish off this Sumo Progressive ROM cycle since I’m so near the end (or maybe just skip the 2 inch lift this week and jump straight to the floor), but honestly my hips and knees are not liking sumo anymore so this mindset change is perfect timing. I will also keep pulling conventional alongside TBDL (might try and just hit some triples/doubles at a lightish weight every time I step into the garage just to make sure I am practicing the movement).

My second goal for the year was upper arm growth (17 inches) good news is my arms are actually growing (1/8th of an inch over 16 cold) so something I’m doing is working - poundstones will stay dips and chins on the regular will stay and additional tricep work will stay as all of these have added value in strongman stuff.

My third goal was conditioning - which given my lazy nature has slipped, so strongman stuff will compliment this goal nicely. I will pick up giant sets again and get to work on the sandbag again.

Other stuff I want to change is variations in movement patterns (just doing flat bench, bb squat, sumo deads and BB OHP at the moment), need to get a lot stronger overhead so will up the frequency here. Not quite sure how to do any of this, I really liked the dark horse conjugate style, I will think further on this. I’ve ordered a scaffold pole (saving a few £/$ on an axle - thanks @T3hPwnisher) so that will feature a lot more. I think I’ve got enough basic equipment to get going, Trap bar for farmers (not exact but will do for the moment), Axle for everything, SSB will be in heavy rotation (this will help my hips because it changes my style from low bar wide stance), got a sled and battle ropes and football bar and the sand bag for push/pull/throw/load/conditioning type stuff - nothing to emulate yolk, but no room for that yet either.

This is all a basic muddle of thoughts/just throwing my thoughts out there. Limitations: I still need to maintain 3 days a week due to family/work/life, but given the efficacy of yesterdays chin/dip session (good lat doms today and good amount of work in 15 mins) I will try to fit in some more mini sessions doing stuff for time, that will likely be a similar to chins/dips and overhead/row
and conditioning type stuff to keep up on weaknesses/target areas.

That’s a long meandering post about my thoughts, but ultimately I think I’ll need to sign up to competition, but lets start by sorting out the basics starting with learning to deadlift!

Definitely an exciting change dude. For learning to pull conventional, ROM progression is great for that. That is actually what I first used it on, after a 3 year hiatus away from deads due to injury. Helps with strongman too, since you tend to pull from various heights.

You should absolutely do it, mate. I am pretty sure you won’t regret the experience and for sure you won’t have to look back and wonder about what could’ve been.

Thanks that’s good to know, will be an interesting learning curve, I think my top conventional in recent years is 160, so I’ve got a way to go. How much of a different animal is an axle dead?

Yea, need to get to grips with it but definitely need some form of competition, light a bit of fire under me (mainly just so I don’t embarrass myself more than anything!).

This, if I’m going to go cheat mode on my goals (you know more cheaty than sumo) then I might as well go all out cheat.

Honestly I need something to keep me on track here I have 2 different fitness tests (choice of beep test or a kind of long medley and a swim test) I need to do and also feel like it’s my personal responsibility to not be ball of fat that blows out within 30 secs. But I am so poorly driven and disciplined with cardio! Hence it being on my whole year goal list.

Depends on the lifter. Brute strength dudes won’t notice too much of a difference, but if you are a trick lifter with a lot of technique the axle will beat you down.

That made me chuckle. I didn’t consider myself a technician when it comes to deadlifts, but I do notice a difference to softer bars. Haven’t pulled with an axle recently but for me, it’s harder on the lower back.

Definitely harder on the lower back, but I am talking about dudes that can hitch and ramp like mad. Axle doesn’t play that game. Can’t oscillate it up either.

That’s not me either. I guess I’ll find out once the scaffold pole arrives!

Might be interesting, I’ll have to make sure I’ve figured form out before I start pulling any decent weight with an axle then!
