Under the rules outlined by United, passengers who “are unable to fit into a single seat in the ticketed cabin; are unable to properly buckle the seatbelt using a single seatbelt extender; and/or are unable to put the seat’s armrests down when seated” will be denied boarding unless they purchase an extra seat.

As someone who flies often…if you cannot fit into an airliner seat do us all a favor and take Greyhound.

Am I the only one who instantly thinks this will be enforced less towards fat and obese people, and more towards large athletic types? Say…ProfX or someone of a similar size.
Probably true, although someone like X probably have more issues with upper body width than getting their ass in a seat.
At 5’10 and 210 I’m not that big and I have to lean away from the aisle whenever a cart comes through or someone walks by.[/quote]
I can not fit into one of those small seats as far as my shoulders. This is made even worse if they sit me next to a guy who is anywhere near or above 200lbs. In fact, you have to be pretty tiny to actually find airplane seats comfortable. I am not hanging into someone else’s seat though, but if anyone on the side of me decides to use their arm rest, I am fucked. It makes a several hour plane ride feel like hell because I am trying to squeeze between someone else and the window usually. If I sit in the aisle, i will lose an arm to that cart.
On a site like this, I would think more could see how this could affect some of us as well if they really try to enforce it.
They use words like “beefy and curvy” when the people who really need two seats are anything but that. They are usually just fat.

I’m 6’ and 235 and was on a flight last week, a 757. I was of course on the aisle and kept getting whacked on the back of my upper arm with the fu%$ing cart. I had to keep an eye peeled for it and lean over when it came by.

Surely someone of your stature gets bumped to 1st class free of charge.
There are no problems up here as far as I can see.

I’m imagining Ronnie Coleman or Joel Stubbs in a typical jet airliner seat.

Well, Stubbs is usually flying the plane so I am assuming the cockpit has better seating.
Ronnie would no doubt get double charged unless he stared down the attendant…that is assuming they actually plan to enforce this crap to that degree. I am betting this will get a lot harder to implement than they expect since most obese people don’t even think of themselves as such and seem to get offended if you remind them how fat they are.
I doubt the airline is going to risk much business by turning away people left and right when they don’t have the cash for double tickets. This will likely only end up affecting people who need scooters due to how fat they are.
Yeah, well I am sure it isn’t the IFBB pros this campain is targeting…that would only be like .00001% of the world population.
It’s because 350 lb fat people make the plane sad.
