After The Flood: JDM135 Powersnatching In Paradise

I’ve only ever done one, but it was fun.

What length?
Mine are all 10k. I want to try the other lengths but every time, there seems to be a good reason to run the 10!

3/8/2026 Sunday.
Kicking off the 6-week countdown to my race.
ONE HOUR RUN. Distance? IDK. My usual pace, so somewhere beyond 6 miles but not much more. I tried to measure on Google Maps but lost track of the landmark I stopped at - could be anywere from 6 to 7 mi.

3/10/26 Tuesday - quick update.
No training yesterday, which is quite rare for a Monday; but I figured the one-hour run on Sunday counts for today, plus, my wife was super sick and I was pretty stacked up.
So call it recovery.
At the very least I’ll train Wednesday. I MAY take a run today, but depends on schedule. All sorts of dr visits etc going on today.

3/11 Tuesday training:
Ended up improvising about a 3 mile run downtown. Do not recommend- crosswalks and construction and then being drenched in sweat with no way to cool off or change. Was a little embarrassing.

That evening i did a legit grip+pullups+hang session.

Thanks. It didn’t feel nice. I felt like quitting every step. But, I’m doing just great honestly, as far as preparedness for this Spartan race I’m hitting the mark. I’ll try to lose a few pounds after an upcoming work trip, just to make myself a little lighter for the runs and climbs, and I’ve accumulated enough miles when “not feeling like it” that I expect the 6 miles of race, when I most definitely will be pumped and feeling great, will be smooth and fast.
There’s an annoying “spear throw” obstacle though; that’s hard for everybody because it’s a very specific skill, not a strength or toughness or grit thing. I intend to get a bit of practice in at my neighborhood park. But it’ll be a little weird dealing with the looks of people who see a middle-aged man throwing a spear at an embankment.

Yeah. I failed this. Burpees for me. Lol. I’ve heard that the trick is an underhand toss to make it arc and hit on the way down. But I couldn’t make it happen so probably don’t listen to me. Lol

It’s the worst of all the obstacles. No amount of grit or mental toughness or willingness to push yourself through pain or fear will help you.
But… now that we know it exists… we can prepare for it… either by training burpees, or by practicing with a spear, or both. LOL.
Let me be completely honest: I bought a shovel handle at home depot. Drilled out one end. Hacksawed the head off a bigass nail. Drove the headless nail backwards into the hole.
I don’t think it would survive more than a few throws, but the weight and proportions should be similar enough to a Spartan spear that it should be better than no practice at all.

You are a man with a plan. I like it. I am not that driven and would probably just do the burpees again.:rofl:The hardest one for me physically was the 6 foot wall. I needed a boost. It was embarrassing. The hardest mentally was the one where you climb over the giant triangle thing. It’s all netting. I am very afraid of heights. Like a step ladder can be an issue for me depending on the day. THAT took some mental strength for me to get through.

For clarity, when I did that race I hadn’t been running for about two years, wasn’t doing any training to speak of and did zero training for the actual event. So that may have played into my difficulties.

Epic storm here the past couple days.
No training Friday 3/13.

Also, weird medical note, I went to bed on the 12th with a little knot in my stomach, then had it (more noticeable) all the 13th and currently morning of 14th.
No loss of appetite, no nausea. But feels like something is stuck in my throat or upper stomach right behind my sternum. I particularly feel it if i inhale deeply and expand my chest.
