55% of murph, then
Collapsed on the side of the road and called my wife at 5:30AM to wake up and come get me, about a mile from home.

To elaborate on this debacle - the actual workout, which I’d come up with the previous day, was this:
-1 mile run to park
-10 rounds.
[pullup/pushup/squat]
1/2/3
2/4/6
3/6/9

8/16/24
9/18/27
10/20/30
[total: 55/110/165] - 55% of a murph
Planned to walk home, got about a quarter mile or less, then couldn’t take another step. Have NEVER had to do this before - it was her or 911. Even when I was vomiting a few months ago, I could always make it home, never had to call for help or felt this bad. I was about to pass out.

It’s true I’ve had a stressful week but I thought the weekend was kinda recovery-y. I didn’t go super hard or anything.

I’ll finally add a positive note (LOL) - the 55/110/165 was performed in 16 minutes. This is slightly less than half my typical murph calisthenics time of 33 minutes for 55% of the work. So a pace increase.
If I hadn’t almost died after I’d have figured, based on the experience today, that a good play is to go something like 2/4/6, 3/6/9, 4/8/12, 5/10/15, and repeat that X number of times. Maybe EMOM or maybe breaks/slowdowns driven by self-regulation.

But also MAYBE I learned something here today about self-regulation, or my lack thereof.

Heal up and recover dude.

yeah, but heal what exactly? :joy:

Lots going on with in-laws in town this whole week. Listening to the lessons of Monday, I took it easy.
We had a game night last night so I didn’t get a ton of sleep.
I DID take a 5AM mile walk to the park, did pullups: 3, 7, 13 (no particular reason for those weird numbers), then walked a mile back.

Then, after a few hours of (remote) work, drove to Lanikai beach and paddleboarded and snorkeled with my family of 6 plus my 9 visiting relatives.

A big group.

Well. This week started with me nearly passing out after, evidently, pushing too hard on a half-murph.
It had been a hard week and I clearly needed to recover.
This week hasn’t been much of a recovery.

Thursday 11/6 I got a quick gym trip in. Snatches, worked up to 135lb for a few reps after many reps at lower weights. Clean and jerks at 135 too.
THen 3x6 overhead squats at 95.
Had to leave - no time for more work.

Then today, 11/7, after another really hard and full day yesterday, just took a mile walk to the park, did the monkey bars, and mile walk back. Let’s call that “active rest”.

Weekend update:
11/7 was Friday. In the afternoon, MIL watched the kids so wife and I could go surfing! So an hour of surfing. A non-zero physical effort.
Then on Sunday, BIL and I took a ~5-mile hike up Kaena Point (from the Makaha side). It was great. Wind at the point felt like 40 mph. He used to work atop 300ft high wind turbine towers, and he said the wind at the point was very close to the hardest wind he’s ever experienced.
A photo or two to follow.

11/10, Monday
Woke up weirdly sore in the back. Also my shoes were still soaked after cleaning the mud off from yesty’s hike. So I did a light KB workout.
50LB bell.
3 rounds of:
10 swings, 1 goblet squat
15/2
25/3
25

Total is only 225 swings (and 18 squats), so less than half of a 10 Swing Challenge session, but my hands aren’t adapted to KBs right now and I was not physically ready to put out that kind of horsepower today. Better than nothing.
And a half-mile walk after.
In-laws leave today, so ready to get back to normal routine.

11/12 Wednesday
Late entry. It’s been a long and busy day.
I woke up around 4:30 to notifications on my phone that an important meeting was starting at 5:00, but someone had failed to invite me.
So bet your ass by 5:00 I was in front of the computer, camera on, coffee in hand, like it was the middle of the damn day.
But at 6 when it was over I turned off notifications and ran about 2.4 miles. While walking the 2.4 miles back I had to tune into more meetings (camera off).

So, got a run. Great.
But the burning-the-candle-at-both-ends continues - I also had to spend about 4 hours driving (hard to explain, since this island is only 30 miles across, but it’s the truth).

And now it’s late late at night but I’m taking a night class (for reasons) and remembered I should log.

Totally maxed out, not on lifting or exercise at all, but LIFE. All my jobs are popping off demanding high levels of attention and effort, and new work coming in all the time.

So, I had ~45 minutes free during a kid-dropoff. Got a lift in, but deliberately chose lifts that did not impact me mentally.
Bench press:
Worked up, then:
3x2x185
3x6x135

SLDL from deficit:
3x8x135

Pullups: A couple with ~50lbs extra.

Strict press: a few sets of 8, light.

THen I was out of time so I bounced. No regerts.

11/14/25 Friday, no training today. Just maxed to the max, as I said before.

I hope you got some much needed rest this weekend! You deserve it!

Did I rest this weekend? I don’t even know, honestly. There were a lot of good times, but also a lot of stress. We have some family stuff going on that doesn’t warrant discussion here but it takes a serious toll.
And I did a lot of side work too, an hour or two each sat/sun. Mostly early AM before the family is up - but even so, that’s time I could have been sleeping or “recovering”…

Today:
4.8 mile hill run.

SUPER STOKED to have done this, it’s my usual “long” route but I normally only run halfway, then walk back. NONE of it is flat, and most of it is quite steep. But my goal today was to just keep going - not setting any speed records, but not slowing to a walk for the entire thing including the uphill grinds - mission accomplished.
Both achiles tendons were in real pain the last mile, but felt better right after I finished. A couple hours later my right foot feels like I broke it LOL, no idea what’s going on there but not really important.

For my Spartan Race goals, I want to be able to do that same run, plus another mile, at a faster overall pace. This is doable but will require some dedicated training, because long runs are just miserable for me (mentally, not so much physically).

11/21 Friday.
Recovery. 2 mile walk outside before 6AM.
Decided yesterday that this is what I’d do, as I’m flat out destroyed from this week. Yesterday and this morning had a lot of diarrhea, too. I ate a gluten-free dessert made with something called Allulose, never heard of it but apparently it affects some people.
That, plus the work and family life stress (which are hitting much harder than anything physical) is why I’m so wiped and needed a break today.

Saturday 11/22 yay! Morning gym trip!
Snatches, EMOM, for 30 minutes.
Despite all the time off, this went amazing. Form felt pretty good.

Started at 75lb and worked up to 135, doing 135 for about the last 10 reps.

Felt awesome.

Woke up at 2:30 feeling rested and not upset about waking up.

Putzed around and had a banana and energy drink before starting a session around 4:45:

1 mile run to park
8 rounds of there-and-back monkey bars (forward to the end, then backward)
1 mile run home.

11/26/2025 Wednesday, thanksgiving eve!
My first meeting was at 5AM so I didn’t do a morning session. Instead I got to the actual gym later in the day:
Snatches. 15 EMOM, working my way up. By around minute 10 I was at 135lbs - which I’m super happy about. 135 is where I was when I took this seriously, and now, a session every week or so has been sufficient to keep me capable of hitting 135 pretty easily. None of the reps felt hard. And I have brought my catch position down a bit, my knees are definitely bent when I catch LOL.

After the snatches, I did overhead squats:
1x3 at 135
3x6 at 115

After that my wrists hurt horribly so I stopped, did some light weighted BSS, 3x8 pullups, some single-arm hangs, knee raises.
