After The Flood: JDM135 Powersnatching In Paradise

9/29/2025 Monday
1/2 mile walk to warm up
10 sandbag squats
1/2 mile sandbag carry, 100 lbs
1 mile run

I carried the bag the entire distance without setting it down. I changed positions (shoulders, bear hug, bastardized shoulders/back) as needed.
To discourage laziness I set myself a simple rule: 10-squat penalty for picking up the bag.
On the initial pickup, I realized I’d be much better off not setting the bag down at all. So I made it the whole way. If I hadn’t set up this penalty, I don’t know how I’d have done.

@j4gga2 responding here so as not to clutter the other guy’s post.

I’ll start with cons:
Incredibly high cost of housing. My new mortgage is 3x my old one, for a smaller house, on less land. Similar construction quality and age.
High cost of living. Groceries, for example. It’s not 3x or even 2x but it’s enough to make a difference. We almost don’t go to restaurants (there are exceptions, but it used to not be a cost thing - now it is) and I have only bought steak at the grocery store once or twice in 2 years because it’s never affordable.
Crowding. Traffic. Homelessness/trashiness. Combining these to make #3.

Pros:
Gorgeous, with quick access to some of the best beaches in the world, and even some pretty awesome mountain hikes. Surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, swimming, or just hanging out at the beach. I know a beach where I can build a bonfire right on the beach, even. Pristine.

Only 30 miles across. I guess this could be a con, because a) crowding and b) lack of some things you’d be able to drive to on the mainland. But I like that I don’t have to go very far. An hour will get you from anywhere on this island, to anywhere else. When I lived near Houston an hour/60 miles was a pretty common drive, even a daily commute one way in some cases.

Culture. This would be a con for some people here, but for us it’s a pro. People are generally kind, and not in-your-face with some boisterous, strongly held and poorly considered opinion. Semi-rural texas was… not a good place for us in that respect. YMMV.

It’s not for everybody, and I wouldn’t recommend it for the obvious financial reasons.
I wouldn’t recommend tourism here either - I’d much more recommend ANY of the other islands of Hawaii, besides Oahu, because I feel Oahu is way too crowded, overdeveloped, and overpriced for the experience you’d get on a trip. But again, YMMV and everyone’s taste is different. Some like walking around a city trying diverse food. That’s not for me. I want to get AWAY from developed areas, so if it were me, coming from the mainland knowing what I know, I’d visit one of the other islands. More pros, fewer cons.

Opportunity:
This is something my wife and I talk about a lot, as the kids are getting older. There is a good college here… just one… There are jobs here… but it’s not clear what career paths the kids may want or if this state is a good place for them to start. It’s certainly not a place they could afford to be homeowners at 24 like we were.
But, I make 2x the income I made in Texas here, at the moment, because the move forced me to get out of my comfort zone and get creative. And if some of those sources dried up I could probably fill in the gaps elsewhere (I hope) - this state has a kinda shallow, closed talent pool, so if you have an in-demand skill there are people who will pay for it.

OK, fun question. Short question, long answer LOL.

Seized the opportunity: Dropped a kid off late-afternoon for an activity, near my gym, and got a session for O-lifting!
Was so fun, and have missed it a lot.
Really want to get back to a regular dose of this.

Snatch:
Worked up to a few at 135.

Clean and Jerk:
Worked up to a few at… 145? Maybe 155?

Clean and front squat:
A couple at 155. Seemed like, when I wasn’t focusing on the press movement to come next, the front squat part was way harder. Hmm.

Shoulder maintenance - empty bar, loads of reps with BTN and strict.

10 pullups.

May not sound like a lot, but it was a solid session, plenty of volume at off-peak weights. To O-lift heavy I need to have a solid base of volume and frequency, of which I have neither right now, so this was as good as it was going to get. Again, though, just FUN to do.

Update for 10/1/2025, I got up at 4 this morning after a poor night’s sleep. At 5:00 I took an easy 1-mile run.

Thank you mate!

Do you happen to know what a rough ballpark is for median rent per month for 2-3 bedroom house + food cost would be?

I’m in Brisbane, Australia, which is our secondmost expensive city. Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world so I wonder how it stacks up.

Also are you on Oahu or one of the other islands?

pretty sure @wiseman83 visited recently and he is from NSW. He can probably give you a tourist perspective in terms of cost.

@j4gga2 I am on Oahu - realize now I should have said that initially. I implied it, but it wasn’t obvious to anyone who doesn’t already live here LOL.
I can’t ballpark that rent, because I’ve never rented (well not for 12 years or so) and never really payed attention. I can google it real quick:
OK, maybe in the $3k/mo ballpark (USD, which cost more than AUD). Nicer places in nicer areas, and vice versa, will be more and less, of course, but that’s the impression I get from Google.
Not going to put my actual mortgage payment here but it’s more than that. But there are many factors that go into a mortgage amount.
I visited Sydney a few weeks ago, LOVED it as did the whole fam, and mostly we felt like we could live there (assuming we keep our USD income).

Should have come to Melbourne

Concur. Sydney is Australia’s LA and I don’t mean that in a good way

I’m one more Brisbane summer away from upping and leaving to VIC

Gotcha! Seems very Sydney-esque pricing. Thanks mate!

Nothing like LA IMO. LA is a cesspool compared to Sydney.

As someone who lived there for 10 years, it’s not bad at all, and fairly similar to Melbourne is a lot of ways. Don’t go west, though, that’s probably where the LA comparisons may come from. Certainly not the CBD lol.

Back to Hawaii. Loved it! But it’s Very expensive! At least the tourist areas are…It’s worth a Visit for sure, just prepare to for it. I was shocked initially at how much things cost compared to say…Sydney. And Sydney isn’t exactly cheap.

Part of this might be my QLD pride ragging on Sydney haha

@j4gga2 @wiseman83 @simo74
on the topic of Sydney and costs…
I opened the mail yesterday to find not one, but TWO fines from automatic traffic cameras - which I didn’t understand existed or worked this way - totalling $690 AUD!
Big unpleasant surprise.
I assume I’ll just pay it and not risk anything else… they know who I am and my address so I don’t see this just disappearing.
Hell, based on the dates, I might receive more over the next few days!
So. Fun.
I don’t know if this exists in the US, typically if you are going to have to pay a speeding fine, you KNOW it because a cop pulls you over and physically hands you a ticket.

10/3/2025 Friday
Starting with yesterday, Thursday: (counts as training) Two surfing trips. One in the morning with the fam, which on its own wouldn’t have been a workout; but right about the time we got home a friend texted to see if I could do a sunset session so I did.
That one was a serious workout. Almost 2 hours in the water. In waves I wasn’t prepared for and frankly just didn’t belong in. Also I did terribly and barely caught anything but that means it was like the upper body version of hill sprints the whole time - going all our to catch waves, failing, swimming back out and then sprinting again to try to catch the next one. Repeat, repeat.

OK, that counts as training, and I got a short sleep, so today’s session was appropriately light to account for that. Just a mile run to the park, some pushups pullups squats without any real pressure, then a nice walk back with podcasts.

I am not sure whether the fines would be enforceable overseas. However if you have unpaid fines it can impact on you getting a visa to enter the country in the futures
I am surprised the hire company didn’t tell you about the fixed cameras. They are all over Sydney. It’s a great way for the police to raise revenue under the pretence of road safety.

You got off easy hahah

Australia, in general, has a lot more police/government surveillance than I think Americans are used to.

Completely understandable, too LOL. I Love QLD…except during State Of Origin.

For a country that was formed by shipping all the criminals off to an island, I’m very upset Australia is more like 1984 than Escape from New York.

I was sick all weekend. Up coughing deep in my chest much of the night last night, but woke up at 3-something so by 5 I was clear enough to run.
Mini-murph:
1 mile valley run
15 rounds EMOM,
-3 pullups
-6 pushups
-9 squats
1 mile valley run
A 35 minute workout, rock solid.

And as a bonus, I squeezed in 4 rounds of the above doing 33% more:
-4 pullups
-8 pushups
-12 squats
This takes up a big chunk of the 60 second round, maybe not sustainable for a full Murph, but there’s room to go up from my usual 3/6/12. I love the symmetry of the 3/6/12 so I don’t know the best next step to increment if I’m going to reduce the total time to complete a Murph.
