After The Flood: JDM135 Powersnatching In Paradise

It’s really tough to say what the culprit here is since it seems to change and evolve. If you’d like, maybe we can jump on a quick call and talk through things. I’d like to get a better idea of what you’re eating each day and I have a few other questions that might help us solve this for you. If you’d like to talk, shoot me an email at amyk.rd at gmail dot com and we can set something up!

Also, have you tried a probiotic and/or digestive enzymes? If not, I’d recommend maybe giving one or both of those a shot.

The gluten already makes sense to me. Here’s something to consider about nuts.

Plants don’t WANT to be eaten. Nothing does. Since plants can’t run away, nor can they fight back with teeth or claws, they develop defense chemicals to ward away things that might eat them. For nuts, these include lectins, oxalates and phytic acid. The macadamia nut IS low in these qualities, but, as usual, “the poison is the dosage”. I used to eat a LOT of almond butter. It was my jam. After enough time eating almond butter, I’d take a big spoonful and then have to IMMEDIATELY run to the toilet. If I kept on eating it still, I’d eventually take a big spoonful and stop being able to breathe. At that point, I had to “cycle off” almond butter, because I had reached maximal toxicity levels and had to let my body detox.

I noticed a similar thing with walnuts. Ate them all the time. One time, after eating just one, I went to the toilet and had bloody stool.

Rice contains this same phytic acid. It’s possible that, in shifting from the nuts to the rice, you haven’t given your body a chance to clear out all this toxicity.

@QuadQueen and @T3hPwnisher thank you both.
Reviewing this, I realize I’m also on an antibiotic since Monday - which should invalidate any new evidence (such as regarding rice) collected this week.
That being said, it doesn’t mean rice ISN’T a problem, and IIRC I had some other similar instances before the antibiotic.

I should defo take a probiotic or enzymes. And will email you shortly!

Pwn, interesting take on developing a sensitivity to nuts over time. I used to absolutely smash almonds - like a pound a day - a couple years ago. Or pecans. Or walnuts. And after moving, macadamias hahaha… Best to keep the doses small from here out, for sure.

I’m a big fan of Greek Yogurt for this goal. Great bacteria cultures. Some folks like sourdough as well for a similar reason

And so glad I could share anything of use there. I definitely had to employ a “nut rotation protocol”, which sounds like something you do to avoid getting testicular torsion upon review. But it really should have just been a sign to me to stop eating those things, haha.

Still taking it easy due to antibiotics (and there’s more to that story… not all sorted out yet. But I’m not taking any more of it.)
5 minutes stairmaster,
then 3x5x95lb front squats,
then some bench press with 3x5x135lb (and funny that I was benching more than FSing, typical though lol)
Then just all-around fun session with chest-supported rows, BTN, DB single-arm overhead, biceps, triceps, laterals - stuff that makes you feel good.
But not pushing anything hard.

Tingling and numbness on my right arm. That’s one of the “Discontinue this medication and call your doctor if…” things with this antibiotic. I’m pretty upset they gave me this monster medicine without asking me if I work out or have a history of tendinopathy, which would have contraindicated this rx IMO.
I’m not a dr but…

Anyway.

Oh @T3hPwnisher sourdough sounds pretty good but I’m pretty sure I’ll stay gluten free for now. Maybe one more controlled experiment to see if I have a reaction… when there’s nothing else going on that could cloud the results.

Believe me, it killed me to make a bread recommendation in the first place, haha. But I figured I had to throw in a non-carnivore option. Concur with staying off the gluten.

Hope things go well with the antibiotics. My wife got messed up a little while back from a string of poor medicine choices from a few doctors. It’s fascinating how it can all go.

10 minutes stairmaster

Brutal session: 24kg (53lb) bell,
15 swings
15 goblet squats
15 pushups

15 swings
14 goblet squats
14 pushups

15 swings
13 goblet squats
13 pushups

All the way down to
15 swings
1 goblet squat
1 pushup

Which is a total of 225 swings, and I think 120 of everything else. Took about 27 minutes.
The thing about a session like this is the very first round takes you to redline, and then you just never get to take your foot off the gas.

Was so wiped out I didn’t run after.

About 6 sets of 3 per side 30lb DB single-arm press, half-kneeling; and some side raises just to finish off.

Cut my foot pretty badly again surfing Sunday, making it painful to walk today

Oh and Saturday we went to a free “crossfit on the beach” session, it involved swings, lunges, burpees, and running on the beach. 20 minutes, was fun, was hoping to make some friends but everyone kinda showed up did the session and left… I know I was cool because while a few people brought kids, I was the only one doing the run with a 3yearold on my shoulders.

One more thing: I stopped taking the antibiotics. When I called the dr to say I had numbness and tingling and wanted to stop, they finally reviewed my lab results and declared I didn’t even need them, as I didn’t have an infection.
LOL.
So of course now I am curious wtf was wrong if there’s no infection, but that’ll wait for a specialist visit next week.

Late entry for 7/31: Wednesday.
Was too busy to log all day.

10 minutes stairmaster
Weighted pullups
10x3 ab rollouts from knees
2 mile run 18:11

The pullups were good and included reps at 70lb, falling a bit short on the 3rd rep, an attempt at 90lb that didn’t get the chin over but came close, and a lot of reps at 45lb. All supersetted with the ab rollouts.

5 minutes stairmaster

BSS: 4x5 at 0, 50, 60, 70lb
ss with
BTN: 3x8 at 50, 60, 70lb

DB C&P: Worked up with 50, 60, 70, 80, 90. Solid reps with the 90 on each side, probably just 2 per side. No belt and wasn’t confident to try for 100 but it’s within reach. Pretty sure I’ve done 100 on the right before, not sure if I ever got it on the left.

20 pullups. Yeah, just walked to the bar and busted out a set of 20. Doing them with BW is so easy.

2 mile run around 18:23. Including a 9mph sprint or two but mostly at 6mph steady.

Had incredibly sore glutes the rest of Friday and all of Saturday, and still feeling it Sunday, from just a little BSS - just 4 sets of 5 and no crazy weight. Damn. Absolutely nothing gets my glutes sore like this except BSS. A good reason to do more BSS but I do hate them so very much.

Anyway I’ve discovered that some obligations I have tomorrow make the gym a bad idea. So I’ll need to train without it.
Right now I’m thinking some sandbag bear hug carries, back and forth; possibly some other sandbag things; then a 1-mile hilly run to the playground, where I’ll do burpees, pullups, and ladder climbs; then a 1-mile hilly run back.

Maybe after your mud run you could set yourself a strength or performance goal for BSS. I find if I program something with a goal in mind it is much easier to deal with an exercise that sucks. 100kg BSS for reps would be an awesome challenge.

Brother, i can barely squat 225 for reps these days, let alone BSS! But absolutely right a goal, even totally arbitrary, will motivate focus.

All the more reason to set a huge goal for a new movement. think of the gainzzzzz

Weekend Update 8/3-8/4
OK I know all my weekend updates are great. Maybe even braggy. This one is no exception.
Saturday we went surfing, and the highlight for me was launching my little girl (who just turned 8) into her best wave yet, where she stood up and rode it all the way to shore.
Sunday we took the bikes to a nearby field so the kids could practice riding and build their endurance.
We also got a baby-seat for the adult bike, and took turns riding him around the field. It was HARD work, we each took several laps. Quads were burning. (biking on grass with an extra 36lbs on the back of the bike)
Anyway the 3-yearold LOVED it, and kept asking to go again and again.
Meanwhile the 3 bigger kids are taking turns on their bike.
Until I pulled out some carboard sheets and got them started downhill sledding! They loved it. They probably did 20 hill climbs each, non-stop - just climb up, sit on your cardboard, sled down, repeat. They brought the 3yo up there with them too.
I can’t express how COOL this was. Once they knew what they were doing we intentionally sat kinda far away so they could just be independent.

8/5 Monday
Spartan race is just 2 weeks from yesterday.
Stayed home this morning as the day’s schedule isn’t conducive to my usual drive in to the gym and office.

-10 minutes EMOM
100lb sandbag carry to the next mailbox and back.
(First distance I tried took the whole 60 seconds, so I dialed it back to be about a 40 second carry each time)

-1 mile run
To the playground with obstacle course

-10 minutes EMOM
2 burpee pullups, hustle to the vertical ladder, climb up and over.
The ladder is around 30-40 feet from the pullup bar and top rung about 8 feet high.

-1 mile run
Back to my house from the playground. The last 0.7 miles are uninterrupted hill climb, and this was my best session yet - the hill just didn’t feel as bad as before.

I’m so ready for the race.

Edit to note:
I have a birthday coming up. Not a super significant one, but it’s a reminder that I’m aging. Wounds don’t heal like they used to. My feet hurt in the mornings. It takes me longer to get active in the mornings. I am more miserable on reduced sleep than before.
Age 40 is still a ways out but only around 1500 days. That’s not a lot when you think of it that way.
I think I’m going to start orienting myself around that ever-declining number.
Make a few changes that align with this reality.
More on this another day.

Definitely on board for these, this log just became one of my new favourites.

I also love the slightly outside the box training, especially the “training for something” parts.

You are not erven in your prime yet mate. I stopped running (due to injury) when I was 42 and started back in the gym with an empty barbel. Think how good you could be in 10+ years. Just need some patience, a clear goal and some sensible programming. You already have the discipline and know how .

Absolutely smashing good session.

Started off with a traffic SNAFU that cost me an extra 30 minutes on my normally easy drive to the gym. Often I cut items from the session so I can still get to work early (early = on time) but not today.

-5 minutes stairmaster
-4x5 BSS with a 42lb KB

-20 minutes EMOM:
FOUR double-pump burpees
FOUR pullups with 10 pounds between my legs!

-2 mile run around 18:30

That EMOM is something I’m so proud of. I mean who here can do 80 pullups with an extra 10lbs in 20 minutes, whether or not they can squeeze in the 160 pushups that come packaged in the 80 burpees? And then the run is really just BORING, it’s not like I’m panting.

Yeah I’m stoked on myself- playing to my strengths instead of beating myself up on things I’m not a natural at today.

Fun day.
5 minutes stairmaster
5 rounds of:
-1 front squat at 185lb
-2 ab rollouts from knees
I haven’t FSd 185 in a long time. It was WAY harder than I remembered. I’d brought my belt for this but it’s a bit loose these days (yay).

Single-arm DB C&P
Started with 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90, 95, then went for gold with 100lb!
IIRC my lifetime PR was to get 95 on both sides, and get 100 on the right but fail the left. Could be wrong about that.
Today I got 95 on both sides, got 100 on the left, and failed the right just due to headspace/focus. I probably could have gone for it on a second attempt but opted not to try.

I have it on video and may upload. Anyway I’m pretty sure that’s a lifetime PR, and as I haven’t been chasing PRs really since I moved, or at least in the last several months, this is pretty rewarding.

2 mile run in 18:26ish afterward.
