After The Flood: JDM135 Powersnatching In Paradise

6/21/2024 Friday

1.4 mile hill run

100lb Sandbag work:
-10 throws over shoulder
-6 squats
-1 bear hug carry
-10 throws over shoulder

1.4 mile hill run

This was great. The second trip back up the hill was absolute misery. The route is 0.7 miles all downhill from my house, then 0.7 miles back up. It’s quite steep and both the downhill and the uphill are challenging.
The Spartan race will have a lot of elevation change so this is crucial for my prep.

I can fall back in love with the sandbag. No desire to fill up the 200lb anytime soon but if I can be best friends with the 100 it’ll benefit me.

Dude that sounds like my home gym in Virginia Beach. There are abunch of influencer wannabe’s that are all insanely attractive. That being said I’m there to work and if you are in my way you are my “gymnemy”. Just gotta be polite wait till they aren’t working and get your stuff. Grabbing 130-150s in front of them is a tight move anyways lol

With the whole family:
Mile hike down to the obstacle park
Obstacle/calisthenics training
Mile hike back home, mostly carrying 35lb youngest.

Lots of pullup and monkey bar and climbing variations. Sally squats with youngest in shoulders. Crawls. Burpees.

The best kind of day, sir.

Had a pair of influencers ask me to wait a bit while they filmed a spot.

I didn’t give them 10 seconds.

6/25 Quick update.
All week I’m waking up at 2AM to attend a virtual training that’s based on east coast US time. This had me feeling AWFUL yesterday, like having the flu. My body didn’t have a clue what time it was. I had a sense of “normalcy” from about 10:00 to 2:00 midday, but before then it was brain fog and after that was just a downhill ramp to an early bedtime.

Today, much better- at 2AM I had more energy, by 3 when the training started I was cognitively plugged in and capable. Doing some pushups periodically, and just took a 1.4 mile run (0.7 downhill, 0.7 uphill) and had some breakfast during the east coast’s lunch break.

Tomorrow I expect to do the same (a run and some pushups). Friday should be back on the routine, then recalibrate next week.

Crazy to think @atlas13 and @taylortooswift how it was, as a young guy in your environment, night after night we’d have to be up at ungodly hours and a) expected to function at full mental/physical capacity regardless and b) expected to function THE NEXT DAY during the workday with full capacity, then repeat every night.

You get out, start sleeping through the night, then you have kids, and the kids keep you awake for years. We’re finally to the point where the kids won’t prevent me from getting sufficient sleep (usually) so this week is nuts.

I’m reading this waiting for my last meeting of the day before I can go home, having been awake for about 35 hours at this point, eaten 3 meals and slammed probably close to a gallon of coffee.

There is no functioning normally anymore :joy::joy::joy:

Yeah we’re going to run you until you break, but every night it’s your ass on the line if anything goes wrong with several billion dollars worth of several hundred megawatts of nuclear power plant. No sleep, no support, but goddamn if you touch the wrong switch one time you and your entire team are getting… consequences.
Funny world.

Honestly I try to just roll with it, but it’s getting harder and harder to justify. Couple months left and I’ll never deal with this business again

Hell of a week as I’ve explained.
Wednesday 6/27

-1/4 mile run uphill
-1/4 mile walk downhill
Repeat for 4 rounds.

This was SO hard. And the first lap I went flat-out. When I got to the top my chest was about to explode, I was gasping with every step. The limiter kicked in for the remaining laps which were a run, but not a sprint.

6/27 Thursday
Had a little free time after work and before the fam got home, took a 3-mile hilly walk. Just a bit under an hour. Also foam-rolled my glutes, which was very painful.

I’m trying to manage best I can. Thankfully I’m deployed so I only have to focus on myself and my sailors. When I’m home I have to factor family into that so I end up not going to bed when I should so I can spend SOME time with my wife during the week.

Update:
It was a good week, but damn hard. Friday was my 14th anniversary! I finished the crazy-time-zone-work situation I had going on, and joined the wife and kids for the final day of a summer activity they’d been doing.

While there I got the chance to join some other parents in a physical challenge, so while Friday wasn’t a “training” day I did get 4:42 of work, haha:

-run
-swim
-run
-paddle on a surfboard
-run

Can’t estimate the distances, at under 5 minutes I wasn’t the fastest or the slowest parent (and a lot of little kids were faster than me too!) but it was good exertion and really pumped me up.

Didn’t get much of an anniversary after that, with 4 kids and nobody else to watch them you just can’t get away. We went to a restaurant (which is now rare for us) and I got a steak, which was a great treat.
Broadly speaking, everyone in the family was wiped from an eventful week, so we went to bed early Friday and had a chill day Saturday. IDK what’s on the docket for today but I’m looking forward to resuming normalcy tomorrow.

Woke up feeling like absolute crap, but hit it hard and proud of how things went:

-10 minutes stairmaster
-20 minutes EMOM:
4 double-pump burpees
4 pullups
-2 mile run, finished under 20:00.

I wanted to throw up after the EMOM, thought the run would be worse than it was.
Amazing how quickly running capacity can be built.

I’m ready for the Spartan race now, honestly, in terms of fitness.

Hopefully I’ll be paddle boarding soon! Sounds awesome.

This cold is really bad. I say “cold” but who knows/cares.
Was lazy with the family on Independence Day, twas a much needed break.

Today:
-10 minutes stairmaster
-20 minutes EMOM: 95lb barbell
3 front squats
2 strict press
-Tabata suitcase carry, 53lb bell. (This wasn’t challenging enough but wanted to try it.) Switching arms each interval.
-2 mile run. Slower than before. After about the first mile I went on cruise control at 5mph and watched something, just getting it done.
