Oh me too, it’s ridiculously humbling to be huffing a puffing at only a 45lb bar. I hate it, but it’s better than an hour on the elliptical, and way better than tapping to some douche bag. Well, at least that’s what I tell myself in the middle of them.

Saturday we continued with the theme of what to do when they stand in your closed guard. We kept our guards closed as they stood then hooked a leg and used the pressure of our hips and a hand on the ground to sweep them back into the bottom of mount. It’s a little weird to sweep them back into mount because you can’t come up and go straight forward you have to go to the side a little and make a big circle to then come to mount.

The next sweep we also hooked the leg, but this time swung around to then be turtled next to them with one leg hooked while they’re standing. Then we stood up with the leg and swept them. While i enjoy the sweep from turtle, swinging around into turtle is not easy.

Then we took the knee bar after hooking the leg when they stand up. When you do it, you’re really committed to the knee bar, and I just don’t like that. Landing with my back so vulnerable feels wrong.

I managed to get sick once again, and rather than stay sick forever and risk being patient zero I took time off. The problem with grappling seems to be that I get everything that’s going around. I went to class twice this week, but didn’t really roll.

No gi we worked from the bottom of half guard. Half guard is so weird. Move your hips one way and you’re in full guard, move the other way and opps side control. And I worked with the boy which made it even weirder because sex in half guard is fantastic. Anyway, first we did and escape where you bump and take their back. It’s a bit like having double underhooks and taking the back from butterfly guard. The only bit I have trouble with is pushing him forward enough to clear my head. I forget to use my knee on occasion, and to keep his leg hooked. Then we did the old school sweep.

My schedule’s been a bit insane lately, so I haven’t been on the mats as much as I’d like. Rather than go over what I’ve done in class lately, I thought I’d write about my game in general. There are a few random things that I’ve been thinking about but never really concretely.

Lately we’ve been going over things that I’ve been previously exposed to, either in class or by asking someone, and I’m finding it really helpful. There are small things that I forgot initially that are making things I do better, and some stuff that I had initially dismissed is now feasible.

From closed guard I’ve decided to focus on an overhook game. I want to develop a game that is mostly the same for gi and no gi. I’d been playing spider guard a lot, and really depending on grips for everything and that bit me in the ass when trying to go no gi. So, I need my go to moves to be easily adaptable. The overhook fits that. There are way more options for the overhook in the gi (which I prefer), my first choice is an x-choke, but only the really green fall for that so while they defend I like to take an over hook and grab the cross collar.

I’ve been having issues with people then lifting me off the ground. My options are to get more on my side and let gravity help me be heavier, or to hip bump sweep since they’re postured so far back and trying to counter balance my weight. I’ve been a bit of a pussy with the hip bump sweep. It feels predictable to me and so I’ve keep stopping half way through and bad things happen. I need to just work it more and make it intrinsic because sweeping into mount fucking rocks. If I get them back down, I like the overhook choke which I do occasionally get. If that doesn’t work, I’ve been trying for the triangle, sometimes I’m easily passed but it seems to be because of the angle of my leg. I need to keep it tighter.

So, that’s my ideal closed guard gi game. I’ll deal with no gi next.
