So I’m trying to adopt a dog, mainly because I like mixed breeds. I grew up in a family that used to train german shorthaired pointers for hunting competitions and other show dogs, so I know what I’m doing.
My rant is that no adoption place lets me adopt because I live in an apartment, but hell I’m looking at small breeds! It’s not like I’m trying to stick a great dane in an apartment. What I really don’t get is how do they think putting the dog to sleep is better than it living in an apartment? That just irks me!
Shelters stick dozens of dogs in cages, barely let them out, and leave them to sleep on concrete floors; then they tell me an apartment isn’t a good place for the dog…

I couldn’t agree more!! Although my last one was gun shy, but that was my fault for not teaching her early enough. Still one of the best dogs to own though.
I hear ya. I adopted a dog from a rescue about 6 months back and the application was insane. The whole process actually was very easy but dang, they want to know eveything about you!

Are you allowed to have dogs at your apartment? Lots of apartments will allow dogs, mostly with certain breed restrictions though. If you can bring a copy of the lease that says what dogs are allowed, they (the shelter) should let you adopt one.
I feel ya. These people are trying to do the right thing, but they lack discretion. You’re an active guy. I have no doubt you’d walk and play with the dog. The whole point of the yard is so the little critter isn’t locked up all day. It’s a shame a dog will be denied a good home because people lack the ability to exercise discretion.
My apartment complex does allow dogs with a 40lbs weight limit, no breed restrictions. They aren’t going to stick a dog on a scale anyway so I could easily get away with a medium sized breed.
About to the post where I should say I own my own home: Around here they only do a foster to own program where you get the animal for 2weeks and they come and check up on it. Therefore, I could not do that.
Just about any breed does well as long as you exercise them, so I always plan on walking a dog 2x per day. Eventually I want to get a husky so I could have a running buddy, but hell the adoption places wont give me a french bull dog let alone a husky!

You can search by breed, size, age, etc. and it gives you info from shelters within a certain distance of where you live. My guess is you should be able to find one near you that will allow you to adopt.

thanks for the website. I have been using pterfinder.com which has the same search engine, but maybe I’ll get lucky and something will come up on this new site!
I think they frown on apartment dwellers adopting is because you will eventually move. Many well-meaning folks move to another apartment complex that doesn’t allow any dogs and the dog gets thrown out or back to a kill shelter.
If you go to a larger pound or kill shelter you may not have to jump through so many hoops. You’ve thought this all through and are willing to commit to this dog for the next 10+ years? Good luck, stick with petfinder.com and do a search for breed rescue organizations in your area.
