Decided that I’m going to start doing a brief yoga sequence before each workout. Since moving to the ‘burbs, my wife and I have found it somewhat more difficult to make it to yoga classes, and I’ve typically felt better in the gym when I do at least a little yoga, so this is a reasonable compromise for now.

This went really well, especially given the circumstances (long day at work, not much fuel in the tank). Both singles at 555 were clean and crisp, minimal grinding. On the right day I’m good for something north of 600, just a question of when I want to test that.

Saturday 11/11

Yard Work (3 Hours)

Traveling for work this weekend. Spent all morning cleaning up the yard - I filled seventeen 30-gallon lawn bags with leaves and whatnot - then ran the mower over the whole works to shred whatever was left. By the time I had finished all that I had to get ready & go to the airport.

I checked in and found a CrossFit gym near my hotel, and confirmed that I can lift at their open gym hours, so I’ll get some lifting in.

All done beltless today. I usually get the belt on around 315 for squats and 405 for deads, but it seems a good idea to do a little heavy work sans belt every so often. It’s honestly a little surprising how different it feels once you are accustomed to belted lifting.

Felt my back tweak a little as I worked in my deadlift warmup, decided to change course and do something different. Just a little easy overhead pressing. Stuck with quick doubles, added five pounds each set, then finished with a pair of doubles at 165 pounds. Nothing too heavy, just a way to get something done after an early twinge in my back.

Took a much longer warmup and lots of baby jumps since my back is still not 100 percent, but this was a pleasant surprise, working up to 405 two days after the nasty tweak (this same thing has happened three or four times in my life over the past 15 years; I’m of the mind that deadlifting has built my core and surrounding musculature to the point that I recover from it much more quickly now than I used to; I used to be out of commission for a week, now I’m pulling at 65 percent two days later).

I’m planning to run the StrongFirst Daily Dose Deadlift routine, or something like it, from now through Christmas. It’s a stressful time, and I could use something simple and to the point for awhile. Most workouts will probably be 3-6 singles in the 405-465 range. Then I will work up to something heavy just before the holiday, probably pulling at 595 (as much as I can load with my setup at home) on Christmas Eve.
