Couple notes here. One, I was traveling home yesterday and a massive flight delay caused me to get home at 3AM. So it was quite remarkable that I hit a front squat PR. Two, I’m pleased that I could rip through 12 easy deadlifts at 385 after doing so.

I’m impressed with your squatting, as you didn’t do any for so long. I’ve never squatted 315. When are you planning to do the challenge?

Thanks man. To be honest this has been quite the surprise - I did do plenty of barbell squats as a high-school and college football player but basically had not done any for…gulp…maybe 10 years?

I did figure that all of the deadlifting would have some carryover, but I’m still pleased that within 2 months of bringing barbell squats back into the fold, I’m confident enough to work at 315, but I’m still thinking that more is on the horizon. I’d like to reach a point where I can squat 405 any time, kinda like I’ve done with my deadlift.

I’ll probably do the challenge on Sunday. I have to go out of town again for work, so Friday & Saturday I’ll just go for a quick run (easiest thing to do when traveling). Challenge will have to be done Sunday morning.

Dumbbell & Kettlebell Circuit

Alternated between sets of random upper-body work (curls, presses) and 10 KB swings with an 88 pounder for about 20 minutes.

I think you and I are on the same page here!!

I second this.

Ten Rounds Of:

Leg Press 10x(plate stack)
1-Arm DB Snatch 10x50

Hotel fitness room, no barbells but a nice enough leg press machine that I decided this would be preferable to running today.

Dem feels. Front Squat PRs are a teary occasion. Back Squat PRs are a fiery occasion.

Of course you run the next day. Hahaha.

Saturday 3/4

Dumbbell Stuff & Leg Press

Just kinda kept myself moving for 30 minutes. Flying home today, back into CrossFit gym tomorrow for my contest with furo, jblues, and MaazerSmit.

I’ll weigh myself in the morning and use that to set my weights (2xBW deadlift for reps & 0.75xBW strict press for reps). I anticipate weighing about 220-225, so I’ll probably be pulling about 450 and pressing about 170.

This was my spring challenge with @furo, @jblues85, and @MaazerSmiit Deadlift 2xBW and Strict Press 0.75xBW for reps, highest total wins. I have to apologize for the lack of video - still figuring out how to work around people and get a decent video shot in the CrossFit space (I did record each but they are almost hilariously bad - I’m only half in the screen for the deadlifts, and the press it’s so close that all you see is my chest). Anyways, I hit 4 reps at 455 in the deadlift - and perhaps I might have left one or two reps in the tank, but with all due respect to my little group of T-Friends, did not feel that an online challenge warranted possible injury, lol. Then I hit a pleasantly surprising 6 at 165 in the press for a total score of 10 reps. Finished off with a pile of singles to work on my back squat. Did 5 at 305, then dropped the weight to 255 and kept going til the open gym hours wrapped up.

Two notes:

  1. the single at 345 was hideously slow, but made it up. I have plenty of brute strength from all the deadlifting, but really need to keep working on the squat to get some of that muscle memory back. Nonetheless, I should be happy with this.

  2. I did at least 20 singles at 255 at the end, maybe as many as 25, I lost count after awhile. I decided I was going to keep doing one solid single every minute or so til it was time to clear out and make way for the incoming CrossFit class. Good way to get some volume in without feeling too beat up - by doing singles, I feel like I can churn them out all day.
