Also of note, I weighed in at 213 pounds this morning, making my current strength-to-weight ratio just over 2xBW deadlift (455 deadlift @ 213 BW). By the time I turn 30 / get married in August, I’d like that to be 500 deadlift @ 210 bodyweight, approaching 2.5xBW.

Congrats on that deadlift PR dude. For some reason, the road from 400-500 always seems to move pretty quick. You’ll be there real soon.

Thanks man. Really appreciate it.

I agree that 400-to-500 seems like a zone where gains can be pretty quick. My possibly-cockamamie theory for why: the earliest stages of lifting (before 400 for most people) are where you’re still learning a lot of stuff - nutrition, rest, programming, technique, etc. By the time you reach 400, you have started to figure that stuff out, you’ve gained some confidence and are starting to feel in a good groove, but you’re not yet at the Elite zone where gains get really, really hard to come by. The Internet is littered with arguments about exactly what constitutes “strong” but I think we can all agree that most people deadlifting 500 meet at least some basic standard of “strong” and, furthermore, that achieving a level beyond that requires a rather significant commitment to training and nutrition.

Of course this is a very broad generalization, and there are many other factors in play. But hey, the Internet is the place where you can make sweeping generalizations anytime you feel like it, amiright?

Another interesting take I heard on this is that of perspective. When you’re building up to a 400lb deadlift, the weight increases are pretty significant leading up until that point (if you go from a 300lb dead to a 330lb dead, that’s lifting 10% more weight than before). Once you get to that 400lb mark, the poundage increases are less dramatic than they were before, which means bridging the gap from 400-500 becomes less herculean than it was from 300-400. The theory then extends that, eventually, you reach such a heavy enough total poundage that perspective is irrelevant, because the weight is just plain heavy, haha.
