The stats for the US and Europe won’t be congruent with Mexico’s due to under reporting and lower awareness earlier on.
But due to the lower acuity we are seeing in the US I suspect there is partial residual active immunity in the US population due to either similar flu A vaccinations or past infection with annual wild strains.
I don’t know how deadly the swine flu will prove to be for those of us not living in bumfuck countries. It’s already shown to be susceptible to Tamiflu, which most highly industrialized nations have plenty of.
The problem lies in the ability of the flu to mutate, not in this particular strain we are seeing (provided you are a reasonably healthy individual with access to the proper medication).
