A New Pandemic

Mr King and I had a falling out awhile back. I gave him a bunch of background material, but then he went and turned it into some good vs evil fantasy bullshit. So no, I ain’t much into quoting his dumb ass.

And trust me, no old black bitch in Boulder is going to save mankind.

The flu stuff is my gig, it’s just what I do.

Some of us don’t consider his writing literature.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist type, but this coincidence is interesting.

The outbreak starts right at the same time Obama visits Mexico.

An archeologist who greets Obama at the Museum of Anthropolgy dies the next day with flu like symptoms (although not proven to be or not to be the flu)

I could’ve sworn you got killed.

Wasn’t this supposed to hold off until Dec 21, 2012 or is that something else altogether?

How coincidental, that’s when I make my last mortgage payment!

If you all have kids in school, tomorrow would be a good day to ask the administration about thier pandemic influenza plan and how they are going to notify parents of sick children. It is going to spread through schools very fast. You all will have to assess your own risk, but be careful with your kids and I would err on the side of caution and keep them out for a few days if you can. This outbreak of the flu hasn’t been designated as a pandemic yet, but it will be well after the fact by the time it is.

The flu might not seem too bad, but it usually knocks off kids, old folks, and people with compromised immune systems. Most adults will be able to ride this out. It will come through in waves, so expect another round in three to six months. If young adults start to die off from this thing, then it is a full on pandemic 1918 style flu. It will get pretty ugly in the U.S.
I hope i’m wrong, but I was on a planning group for pandemic influenza a couple years ago when I was working in D.C. This current outbreak is aligning with all of the models we worked off of. Back then we thought it would be an avian flu though.

Isn’t it already showing patterns that are especially worrisome and similar to 1918 - like affecting the most those with stronger immune systems? 20-40 year olds?

Yes. The deaths in Mexico are bit to diverse in ages to pick out a pattern just yet, there are only 84 of them. Hopefully this will all just blow over and go away like SARS did. Interesting it came out of Mexico and not China. We all expected the next pandemic to come out of China.

Cytokine storms are such a kick in the balls.

Reuters article. 25% of the national stockpile of Tamiflu and Relenza are being released to pre-position for a possible outbreak. If you can get your hands on anti-virals like Tamiflu or Relenza, do it now. It will disapear from the shelves in the next few weeks. If you have a doctor friend, get a prescription for either.

Yeah, that’s what the storytellers keep saying.

I’ve been here for a long, long time.

Don’t expect that to change soon.

I really wonder if this bug was man made. The Obama factor does seem rather odd.

In the book, God whisks Randall away to a tropical island. You see, God (according to S King) loves to watch the interplay between Good and Evil. His view of God is pretty negative as God allows a pandemic to happen, but then has Good triumph.

Of course, just to put this whole scary “pandemic” into perspective, every year about 36,000 people die of ordinary garden-variety non-avian or swine flu.

So far under 100 people have died. All of them in Mexico. Presumably all from the same strain of flu, but I don’t think it’s been confirmed.

So I think I’ll wait a bit longer before getting too scared.

I will, however, keep exercising, eating right, getting enough sleep, and washing my hands before I eat. Haven’t had the flu in over fifteen years, and have never had a flu shot in my life.

And I certainly never wore one of those ridiculous little surgical masks, even when I was riding the fucking cheek-by-jowl Tokyo subway every day during the worst flu seasons of the year.

If this does develop into a global pandemic, and I continue to not get sick, then I suppose I’ll change my screen name to Stu Redman.

Boulder, Colorado is nice, I suppose (although Colorado Springs would be better, so we could still get our Biotest supps), but this time I think we should head up to Missoula, Montana. Better fishin’ and huntin’ up there.

Randall and his motley crew can have Vegas, as long as they stay the fuck in Vegas.

Finally some goddamn sense.

People are comparing it to the Spanish Flu;

The 1918 flu infected nearly half the world’s population and millions of people died. This strain has only killed 60-100 people, that’s not even a decent clinical trials worth of data. All these people with such amazing physiological insight and predictive powers should be overseeing the approval of new drugs.

Windows and door are boarded up from the inside, the canned food is stacked, and the generator is topped off. After this thing runs it’s course, I’ll meet the survivors wherever the gathering point ends up. My radio handle will be Swamp rat. Good luck folks!

"The recent swine flu outbreak taking place in Mexico may have originated at a US-owned pig-breeding farm by the name of Granjas Carroll (aka Carroll Farms), which is owned, in part by the Smithfield Food Company. Smithfield also promotes the consumption of genetically-altered foods, and even owns certain genetic lines of pork breeding. On April 12 of 2009, before the swine flu outbreak was covered by mainstream media outlets, the Mexican newspaper La Jornada broke a story on how Carroll Farms was polluting the drinking water near the towns of La Gloria and Perote, in Veracruz.

According to La Jornada, Carroll Farms maintains a strong political influence in municipal governments in the area. Recently, a group of environmental protesters that blocked a highway near the Carroll Farms facilities was arrested. Among them were Guadalupe Serrano Gaspar, a 66-year-old man who said was arrested by undercover police officers. Local residents from 20 towns nearby in Veracruz and the bordering state of Puebla also oppose what they consider deplorable environmental practices by Carroll Farms. The complaints from local residents range from reports of large quantities of pig excrement in the waterways to the smell of chemicals and feces in several towns."

Well folks I’m eally starting to worry about our nation. For some reason Europe and Asia seem to be able to do the right thing by checking people at the airport before they come into the country, but not here. No, instead of shutting down the border with Mexico where the flu has suppossed to come from we still have an open border. Why?I thought all the illegal guns from the US were winding up down there, right? In return they send there poor and uneducated, and sick up here.Wouldnt shutting the border make sense?

Do you know anything about CB radio?

No, but I’m willing to learn.
