A new level of Anti-Bush

I realize that the pro-bush/anti-bush topics have been flogged almost to death, but I was in a music store today shopping in the punk section and I saw this cd and had to buy it.

It is called “ROCK AGAINST BUSH” and it is 26 songs and a dvd that are anti-bush. The CD has this disclaimer on it “The bands on this comp have come together for one reason, and that’s to express our outrage at- and form a unified front against- the dangerous, destructive, and deadly policies of George W. Bush and his administration.”

The CD is actually quite good in my opinion, but I thought I would just share this with everybody… just a little more fuel on the political fire.

and courtesy of the anyone but bush school of thought would you believe:

I can’t believe that Kerry site is real… I’m voting Donald Duck this year as a write on.

Ok…what “goatee bands” are actually featured on this CD? I am curious.

Never mind…looke up the CD. The bands are a joke and have no talent. REAL musicians like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai would blow them off the stage. I wouldn’t waste my time.

Steve Vai? HAHAHAHHAHA “SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE’S LIVIN IN THE PAST, CONTEMPORIZE MAAAANN” HAHAHAHHA

This isn’t really a new level of anti-bush, the punk community has always hated him. The CD doesn’t look that bad if they would of took off some of the terrible sell out bands such as: New Found Glory, The Ataris, The Offspring, and Sum 41. If you actually intrested you might wanna check out www.fatwreck.com . I probablly wont buy the cd, maybe just download the new nofx and anti-flag songs.

A1 - What do you mean by “sell-out band”?
What qualifies a band to fall into that category?

haha apparently bands that are good enough to make some money are sell outs

and ptrdr, relax buddy. every time someone says something remotely bad about Bush you don’t need to blindly refute it. john kerry is a douche bag too, remember?

lumburjack…I wouldn’t even check out what these stooges have to say about Bush, so I can’t deny/confirm or refute any of their crap. All I am saying is that they are sucky musicians.
And Il Cazzo…Steve Vai is a throwback to the past???..ask any serious guitar fan about that…you would get your face laughed in!

A sellout band is anyone that you’ve actually heard of. If a punk band doesn’t sleep on their girlfriend’s couch, they are a sellout.

smirk

I don’t take “artists” too seriously. They tend to be flakes more than the average person. You might as well take offense to things 6th graders say about politics.

wow, okay anyways, PtrDR, I eill completely agree that as musical ability goes, steve vai, joe satriani, devin townsend, and a whole slew of others completely blow these guys away, but hey, I have heard these guys and their progressive rock bands, and really, they aren’t a heck of alot of fun. Tons of talent, alot of energy but when is the last time you decided to liven up the party by throwing in some Vai?
I have never seen it happen.

And I agree that punk has always been anti-government, but I have never seen a cd that targeted one individual before. That was what blew my mind.

To clear up the whole sell-out thing, IMHO, it goes like this, most people who listen to punk are trying (and failing) to be “hardcore” and be rebellious, even though for the most part they come from middle-upper class families, so they get a mohawk and wear make-up and listen to angry punk rockers yelling and swearing about how life has been so hard on them and they hate this and hate that. And they HAVE to be underground, or at least never EVER get radio play, because as soon as these bands are not known only to the punk rocker and his punk rocker friends it steals his ability to stand out from the crowd, so he has to find another band that hasn’t become famous and, oh the horror, actually made some money. That way they can be a troubled individual that never smiles.

People just don’t realize that being in a band is a job, a fun job, but a job none-the-less. The whole point is to get a following and make enough money so you can be a band and not have to work the night shift at Murder King.

So really, I don’t think that any band is a sell-out unless they let the record companies tell them what to write, bands progress on their own, if you are expecting a band to write the same songs for ten years, then why would you buy more than one CD? They grow and change as time goes on.

“I am going to become a Punk rocker, and Idividual… just like everybody else.”

Re sellouts, I’ll throw in a little story. A long, long time ago, there was a little weightlifter. His name was little Sonny S. He was a metalhead in high school, and he loved his music ferociously. It was awesome to listen to things that all the other posers listened to, like MTV bands, and New Wave and god-awful rap (except for PE yo!).
He almost came to blows once with another guy on the football team who didn’t want to hear Sonny’s music and wanted to play his reggae (yeah, he was kind of a wigger). There weren’t any other metalheads on the team, and the other guy was a true alpha male, and Sonny backed down-something he regrets to this day

Sonny went to concerts all the time, and had the metalhead jacket-you know, the denim jacket with his favorite bands’ patches sewed on.

THe biggest patch of all, the one in the middle of the back, belonged to Metallica. Metallica and AC/DC were his favorite bands, and he swore he’d listen to them until he died and that they would always be his faves. He loved other bands, sure: he worshipped British bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and to a lesser extent Motorhead, he worshipped Megadeth and Slayer, liked Sepultura, Overkill, Testament and really liked a Cali band called Suicidal Tendencies that combined metal with some hardcore and some rap (he even quoted them in his yearbook!).

To be continued…

Damn, jump on me for the sellout comment, lol. The bands I mentioned, I don’t like because I think their music sucks, not just because they are sellouts. Just to clarify, I dont have a mohawk, I am not a rebel, I am from a middle class family, I am not “hardcore”(not even sure how you would define it) and I do listen to other music besides punk, pink floyd, led zeppelin, the white stripes, etc… My definition of a sellout would be someone who changes all their ideals/beliefs in pursuit to make money. I can’t blame them for wanting to make money, just don’t try to be something your not. The talented bands are not the ones that are always famous and make the most money, turn on TRL if you want an example of that. My position on all the pop punk bands can be summed up by this song:

"Lost in a sea of combat boots, flush the bouncers with wasted youth
When did punk rock become so safe, when did the scene become a joke
The kids who used to live for beer and speed now want their fries and coke
Cursing and flipping birds are not allowed, in fact let?s keep noise levels down

Why don?t we put pad on the kids, helmets, head gear and mouth pieces
Then we could pad the floor and walls, put cameras inside bathroom stalls
We make sure only nice bands play, and we could sing my country ?tis of thee sweet land of liberty

When did punk rock become so safe
I know it wasnt duane or fletcher, who put up the barricades
Like a skate in the heart, somehow we got driven apart

I want conflict I want dissent, I want the scene to represent
Our hatred of authority, our fight against complacency
Stop singing songs about girls and love, you killed the owl you freed the dove
Confrontation and politics replaced with harmonies and shticks
When did punk rock become so tame, these fing bands all sound the same
We want our fights we want our thugs, we want our burns we want our drugs
Where is the violent apathy, these f
ing records are rated g"
I need to stay off the off-topic forums, lol.

and i would give a rats ass about the political views of punk bands why? odds are they are poorly educated and not quite in touch with reality… they are in punk bands after all. so why do i give a fuck what they think?

I think it?s funny that the bands on this CD actually think that their political opinion should be advertised. I listened to some of these bands, but it?s been at least 15 years. I think that makes me old.

Me Solomon Grundy

sonny—what exactly is a “WIGGER” anyways…lets elaborate…

[I made a huge mistake in the 1st part: it should read: “it was awesome to listen to music that none of the other posers in high school listened to. IT a)made Sonny feel special and b) it was GREAT, intense, powerful music”] con’t…

Sonny and his metalhead friends hated the popular music scene, and justifiably so. MTV was horrible (and Sonny can’t BELIEVE that MTV is ten times worse today than it was when he was in HS) and there was no outlet to hear metal, except for: Headbanger’s Ball Saturday nights on MTV and one of the local radio stations (was it 102.7??) that played metal late Saturday night.
HB was a joke. The hosts were the gayest, lamest POS you’v ever seen. Adam Clayton, who looked like he was a transvestite w/out the makeup on-the guy didn’t have one ounce of testosterone in his body- and Riki F’N Rachtman, the most annoying person of the 90s, except for maybe David Arquette.
Most of HB consisted of videos from 80s rock bands like Cinderella and Tesla and Bon Jovi. There’d be maybe 4 or 5 videos out of the whole show by a REAL metal band. But those 4 or 5 videos were enough to give SOnny a small amount of pleasure.

But his favorite band, Metallica, never appeared on the show. WHy?
Because they had never made a video. And yet they kept getting more and more popular, selling out arenas in the US and stadiums in Europe, becoming the first band in history to sell a million albums without a) a video and b) more significantly, major airplay on commercial radio stations. That’s how f’n great Metallica were!

Senior year, Sonny S gets to see his idols live at Brendan Byrne arena. They were already a year into the black album tour and …they stunk. The show sucked. Sonny had been to a lot of concerts, in clubs but also a few arena shows, and Metallica sucked. In their defense, they were well into what became almost a 3 yr tour, and maybe they were tired.

A year later, he had 9th row seats to see them again and they kicked ass. But the magic had kind of worn off, now that he was a freshman in college.

SOnny started listening to classic rock and got into that, and pretty soon the college experience broadened SOnny’s mind and he started liking everything.
Metal was only a small part of his playlist.

12 yrs later: Sonny hasn’t listened to Metallica in years. THeir last few albums were horrible, IHO. BUt, they grew and evolved and Sonny doesn’t resent them.

THe FINALLY made a video, and it propelled their sales to the top of the charts.

DId they sellout? Maybe. BUt Sonny is HAPPY that his favorite band of 4yrs made it to the big-time. THey are making tons of money, fucking much better looking groupies, and are bona fide rock superstars.

Don’t they deserve that for all the years they’ve put in, now its 25 f’n yrs since they got together? DOn’t they deserve that for all the great music they put out?

Yeah, they do.
