IDK man, I think OSHA is a few tommy guns away from being an organized crime enterprise.
“You need to pay us to install this safety rail. Or else.”
At times. Not to derail the thread (mostly because I think the following is funny in a tragic way)
Nobody at my former employer thought it was a good idea to have people harnessed or fenced in working on an a/c fuselage in an assembly harness probably 16 ft off the ground.
All of a sudden some guy falls off the a/c (predictably) breaks both hips and legs and now there is a push for safety.
Nothing like reactive “preventative” measures lol.
Thats because you don’t do the stuff that gets people killed.
I have and do. Trust me, they serve a purpose.
The saying goes “The rules are written in blood.”.
We can’t have rules without OSHA? Fuck those assholes.
Actually, I would be interested in making this its own thread.
I should clarify. My employer uses their own form of OSHA that is effectively more strict than Cal OSHA.
There are annual training requirements for all employees, alongside OSHA walkthroughs/audits monthly. They also come in any time a dangerous condition is reported. All good things.
BUT they are in the business of job security and don’t actually help you fix anything or provide solutions. YOU spot the issue, THEY agree, then ask what YOU are going to do to fix it. When you offer repeated solutions, they have a habit of saying “no” on a quota basis - because the more time it takes you to find a solution that they like - the more time they can ‘bill’ you for.
They create rules that write themselves into the process, so that they can justify needing more people. It’s like the politician that legislates that more politicians are needed to solve the problem.
FWIW, I work in a variety of scopes… active machine shops (lathes, CNC, hydraulic presses), live 480 current, active flightline in a testing/troubleshooting environment, live explosives… you get the point. I had 2 coworkers struck by lightning some years back; one died within the week, the other lost vision in one eye and cant read without mouthing the words out.
I can’t have this conversation. Ive spent an entire career being told to do things that can/do cost people their lives every day, by people that don’t give two shits about rules, lives or anything else.
If you have the luxury of believing that they’re bullshit, thank your lucky stars.
And you do so in a manner that ensures the safety and longevity of the people doing it.
Not everybody cares to do that.
OSHA yes, the rules no. Many safety rules in my current workplace go beyond what OSHA requires. Even then they come up short cause guys still ignore safety measures and cut corners. We had a death last year, young guy too, it sucked.
What was his wifes name?
What was his sons favorite park/amusement
ride?
I think what @Alrightmiami19c is getting at, is that safety rules do not have to be instilled by 3rd parties that eat up exorbitant amounts of funding to do so. Companies can be, and often are, capable of enacting effective safety measures without the need of government oversight.
Of course, there are plenty of examples where a 3rd party to ensure safety would be beneficial - mainly for the companies that do not give a shit about their employees and put profits before safety… I think the employees ought to have some common sense when working in places like this, and seek other employment.
But I’m a small government guy, and I liken OSHA to politicians, so I’m biased.
I know. I’ve known a lot of people who flex conservative, but as soon as they or someone they love gets injured or killed their first phone call is to an attorney, then the Dept. Of Labor Relations, OSHA, and every other letter agency that has anything to do with work.
I’m more of a cynical misanthrope, so I know that nobody is purely altruistic, and when push comes to shove its better your ass than theirs.

Anyone ever seen this one?
And then every one of those departments gets to further justify their existence, promotion, and pay increase - all while making it harder for the business to remain profitable.
I’m all for keeping workers safe, truly. But the nature of these organizations is that which will do nothing but grow - indefinitely. That’s why people say things like “fuck OSHA”.
Ok.
Can we get back to memes now?
