A Great Marine

Brian Chontosh. Reading about what he did was nothing short of amazing. The guy was an absolute beast.

This is really the stuff that the media needs to show more of!

Old but good.

Money quote:
Accounts of American valor are dismissed by the press as propaganda, yet accounts of American difficulties are heralded as objectivity. It makes you wonder if the role of the media is to inform or to depress - to report or to deride. To tell the truth, or to feed us lies.

Remember that praising this guy makes you a bloodthirsty warmonger.

Thats a t-man right there.

PGA I like the idea of finding good articles on our troops. All we see is this stupid vids of our guys throwing rocks at a dog. Who cares…

This is the stuff we should be focusing on. I will see if I can contribute with some other findings.

True!

New to me. I did a search and it came up buried in one thread.

Captain Brian Chontosh is a Marine.
Here is another recipient of the Navy Cross.
Sgt Major Bradley Kasal.

Lance Corporal Joseph Perez. Another Navy Cross recipient.

That is a great post. He’s already legendary in the Marine Corps. Thanks for the post, PGA.

You guys want to know how to REALLY support the troops? It’s stuff like this. To many people, screaming “bring them home” is their idea if supporting the troops.

It’s not.

The President just awarded the Medal of Honor to Marine Corporal Jason Dunham. This is a HUGE deal. He’s the first Marine to receive the nation’s highest decoration since Vietnam. He jumped on a grenade and died.

Did anyone see any coverage on this?

No.

Do you know exactly how many Americans have died in Iraq?

Yes.

Brittany Spears’ behavior is more newsworthy than a Marine receiving the Medal of Honor.

The mass media reports anything that is negative. Good news doesn’t sell. The media wants bad news, and when it can’t find bad news it will often make stuff up.

Support the troops by actually supporting them. “Bring them home” is NOT what they want to hear.

By the way, Capt Chontosh is a Marine, not a soldier. The media always screws that up also.

Navy = sailor
Air Force = airman
Army = soldier
Marine = Marine

Another bad-ass. Marine legend. Probably couldn’t bench 225 or DL 250, but I bet he could kick all our asses.

My favorite line in the citation:

“Lance Corporal Perez continued to destroy enemy combatants with precision rifle fire.”

Just says it all.

Outstanding…

Mufasa

HOORAH!

Its funny, I created a thread about a Marine who goes above and beyond his call of duty and it gets minimal responses. I create one where soldiers throw rocks at a dog and it turns into Forum Wars.

THIS is precisely why the media only portrays controversial shit. It spurs responses, good and bad, and thats how they pay the bills.

Maybe there will be a solider who goes above the call of duty and at the same time he’s hucking rocks at a dog while dangling a water bottle around his waist and making kids chase him for it.

I think that will be a media gem!

Great point. Nice little experiment. Good news is not controversial. I wonder when everything changed. In the 40’s the media was overwhelmingly positive and good news DID sell, especially good news about the war. Even Hollywood celebrities were supportive of the military back then.

Great article. I sent it to everyone in my address book.

To me, this sort of thing is the biggest atrocity/crime committed in the last ten years. The fact that our “news” programs are 1/3 entertainment, 1/3 sports, and 10 minutes of weather, that only leaves ten nminutes of real news. Watch news broadcasts from other countries, and they actually talk about what’s going on in the world.

The sadder fact though, is that more people care about Brangelina and their baby than bring a part in the world. And I think some people in power are very very happy about thAT.

I still wish the troops were home. I’d love to see the military might brought against something more honorable.

I don’t watch the news, I read the paper. If you want to really know what’s going on in the country I suggest you do the same.

Oh yeah, this guy’s a hero no doubt about it. Just one of the many unsung stories you’ll never normally hear.

Thanks PGA.

Building schools, hospitals, roads etc. and bringing freedom to the oppressed IS honorable, which is exactly what my son-in-law did during the year he was in Iraq… It’s just that the media doesn’t want support for the war and therefore won’t report what is really happening except for the casualties and controversies. God bless our troops!
