So i have acquired some extra money and wanted to build or buy a Gaming computer around 800 dollars. Games i would like it to play are WoW, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect 2 i would like to play all those pretty smoothly. Power supply cost can be ignored i have one and case cost just the motherboard,GPU and CPU (am i missing anything else?) Im really lost when it comes with the whole process of buying this stuff all i know is the more expensive the part is ‘usually’ it is better. However that isn’t viable when i am on a budget lol.
Are you near a Microcenter or Fry’s, then you should be able to design something nice.
I know one of them was running i5 750+ a decent motherboard combo for 219ish (i7 920 is running at around 180 ase well).
what is the wattage on your power supply, it is likely that you need to upgrade due to graphics card and cpu.
Those games do not require the highest spec ever so anything along to line of ati 4850 or 9800 gt should be good to go for under $ 100 now unless you want to future proof it.
Memory is usually cheap at less than $100 unless you are going overboard.
Let’s see <$300 for Cpu + Mobo + <$200 for GPU + memory, you have around $300 to play around with for cables, maybe a new power, heatsink, etc.
If you go to ibuypower.com you will be able to get a very nice set up for 800 easy. Tell me what you think.
You need Heatsink/Fan, Ram, Harddrive, Operating System, Sound Card (might have built in to motherboard depends what you get), DVD Drive (probably will want DVD +RW… be nice to get Blu-Ray but since you’re on budget hold off on that and can always upgrade later), Ethernet Card.
I’m assuming you already have a computer and just want another one but if you’re on laptop or just don’t have a computer you’ll also need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and microphone or headset combo (for VOIP)
There’s a good bit to know and based on your post I’d advise you to read up a bit on tech forums before starting. Price everything out first of course. Ask others to make sure everything you get is compatible (particularly the RAM and Motherboard). Then go for it.

If you’re really srs send me a PM. I would be happy to make some reccomendations. I have built several computers myself, it’s a bit of a hobby of mine.

Any decent motherboard will have onboard sound and ethernet, you DO NOT need those as extras when you’re on a budget.
OP, I agree on the power supply comment, what wattage is it? You’ll need something in the 500-700w range, especially if you get a half-decent graphics card.
Do you have a screen? Keyboard and mouse?
You’ll need:
Mobo - spending a bit extra here will be better for the long run.
CPU (+ Heatsink if you’re overclocking, other wise a stock cooler will be fine)
Ram - 4gb will be plenty
HDD - 500gb-1tb is fine
Basic DVD/RW is all you’ll need as far as opticals go.
I can recommend a system to build if you like, just need some more details…
Edit:
Of course, you need a GFX card too.

x2. The screen can take half of your budget.
Solid state HDDs FTW!

Yeah, SSD’s are the first thing you need on a budget computer.
I have mouse & keyboard and Monitor just the computer is all I need really. Hmm I guess maybe my power supply wont cut it. Hope this helps

hah, $800 alone will be the cost of a SSD…
On $800 its going to be tough to make an average gaming machine to play most of the new games, even on low to medium video/graphic settings. You probably don’t need a 500-1tb HD if its just for gaming, a 250GB will be fine, save that extra cash for more important components like others suggested.
ahh okay i missed some things I dont need DvD drive, Nor Operating System(my dad has a key of Windows 7). I was looking at ibuypower it seemed like a pretty good site with good prices. Thoughts on it?
That’s from newegg.com - which from what I hear is pretty good with prices.
That’ll run pretty well, and it’s got USB & SATA 3.0, a SATA 3 hard drive and a good graphics cards.
Plus a free game. You might need to pay in a bit for shipping.

Take out the DVD drive from that price then, and you’ll cover the shipping.

NO NO NO NO. NEVER BUY FROM IBUYPOWER
EDIT:
RSGZ has the right idea, and has done all the work for you. Buy that.
Well, I think the case is important to give you good cooling and be quiet.
If you’re willing to spend another bit I’d get this - Antec P183 Black Computer Case - Newegg.com
Otherwise, something like this will do:
I wouldn’t go for a cheap case, but have a look around if those are out of budget.

IMO that is an expensive motherboard and processor for a budget pc. You could always go for the latest pinset but go cheaper on the actual CPU. And I generally do not skimp on the motherboard but i’m pretty sure i got an AMD board for about half the price. Also i got my CPU for about 100 bucks. So you may want to consider switching if money is a big issue here.
Things you can skimp on:
HDD
RAM
CPU
CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Drives
Things you shouldn’t skimp on:
Motherboard (Always get the latest pinset)
Power Supply
Case
Video Card

I see what you’re saying but he said his budget was $800, should I suggest something for $500 instead?
Why build something that will not be able to play newer games? I think when buying any hardware future proof yourself as much as your budget will allow, and that’s what I’ve done.
