Contrary to popular belief in rest of the US…TX high school isn’t about football. It’s just held to an higher standard…obviously.

Plus it’s TX…we do whatever the fuck we want.
This needs to be on a T-shirt, coffee mug, or bumper sticker. Or maybe as the new Dr. Pepper slogan for their football game sponsorships.

It’s not like we were hurting for much of anything at all anyways. Our teachers were always treated very well, we always had new computers. Heck, we even had projectors in every room in the high school.

Truthfully we do not need or want another high school. All too many times we have seen schools in our district get absolutely smashed when they split up. It was a little bit packed during certain hours and parking sucked but we would rather have that than the other option.

Smashed how, in football? Academically? Contrary to popular belief in TX, HS should NOT be about football. I’ll buy a lack of teachers argument, but athletic competition should never drive school districting and expansion decisions. If it does, it only strengthens my Ancient Rome comparison.

Athletics and being good at said athletics is how the money is made for the school. High Schools and Universities spend a shitload on sports… just the way it is. A university coach needs to be a millionaire? Where’s the outrage? The stadium will probably end up being used and rented, etc. It will make money.

Academics took a huge hit, the sports were just a kick in the teeth to top it off. I’m not refuting your Ancient Rome comparison, I actually think that is very truthful. I’m just saying that the academic side of my alma mater was not hurting for anything at all. They did not take any kind of major hit to help finance this stadium.

Some people look at football as life or death, it’s just a little more important than that.

All bullshit aside…TX public school system is a joke when it comes to results. We are ranked at the bottom. In fact,I believe we rank just above/or below Montana. Pretty sad for a state our size and with resources we have.

But of course, some argue that the entire public school system is a joke regardless. Do they home school a lot in Montana??
I don’t know, I live in NJ, I just have a PO Box in MT;) The public schools in my township are pretty solid. Our HS football field is getting a makeover, but it took 8 years to raise the money privately - it is not coming from the school budget or public money. It should be noted that most of the top HS athletic programs in NJ are private schools.

Universities and HS athletics budgets should not be compared, there is a world of difference between the two. Universities are in the sports business to make money and/or for overall university exposure and recruiting, not just athletic recruiting but for general student recruiting as studies have shown a correlation between athletic success and number of applications. Students attend college where they choose whereas kids go to HS in the district where they live. There are typically rules that prohibit Public HS from recruiting students or athletes.

You will find that in most places, the revenue from HS sports events doesn’t even cover the cost of the athletic programs. They get a small portion of the school budget for arena/field maintenance, coaches salaries, to keep the lights on, etc. Booster and sponsor advertising fill in the rest. That’s why you see schools dropping certain sports programs from time to time, like wrestling, baseball, even football in some places in the northeast, or they pair up with another school for sports.

I doubt the HS will ever make enough revenue from other events to pay for the stadium. Even professional stadiums rarely pay for themselves on a real basis.

I went to a good public high school in Austin. And we had a pretty good stadium with a stupid expensive jumbotron (at the time).

Westlake babi (where Drew Brees went btw).
