Huge deadlift man! You must have an amazing wrap technique to go with an overhand grip with thumbs over @ 590 lbs. Never seen that before.

Thanks man. I actually find that thumbs get in the way when you use straps, so I go thumbless. This is my technique for straps.

I haven’t posted on this site before, but I’ve been meaning to get more active on it. I’m a powerlifter too, and my physique has by far changed for the better since training solely for powerlifting. Does training for powerlifting mean I don’t do any hypertrophy/supportive assistance work? Hell no. I do a lot around training for the main lifts. But my chest has never had the mass that it now has in the two years I spent screwing around with physique training (bad physique training) until now.

Working heavy in this sport has really given my body stimulus to adapt to–for total noobs who try to jump into physique-based work with no strength training base, I theorize, after going through my own experience with powerlifting, that they’re not strong enough to work with weights in ANY exercise that will develop really serious growth for physique competitions.

Your post in this sub forum really illustrates some of what I’m talking about here. Also, I’m another one who lost bodyfat/pounds on the scale and has increased my strength significantly. I lift in a lower weight class and I don’t really have a choice. Best of luck in your continuing work powerlifting AND developing your physique.

Thanks for the well wishes. I definitely concur with the thoughts you have here regarding the relationship between strength and size/physique. I see a lot of kids that hop on an “aesthetics routine” trying to grow big with pink dumbbells. I always thought a foundation of strength/athleticism would carry one far.

physique based and strength based are NOT mutually exclusive.

I am unsure if this is agreeing with me or disputing something I said.

Got a video of a recent conditioning workout I did.

New deadlifting video, 605lbs for 4 reps

Have you done anything in particular to keep your hips and back healthy?

Any general recovery methods you use (epsom salt baths, gentle stretching, contrast showers, etc)?

I train at -30 degree temps in a poorly insulated garage, haha. I honestly don’t believe in a lot of the voodoo out there. I never stretch, don’t do mobility work, take hot showers and don’t have a tub big enough to bathe in. Occasionally my wife will give me a massage, but otherwise I just train.

I liked Steve Pulcinella’s idea of “paleo rehab”, wherein you just keep bombarding your body over and over again until it decides that it can either get stronger or die.

That said, I am most likely a wreck and will have a rough time in my old age, but I figure fuck it, my grandpa never lifted and he was messed up when he got older too, so I may as well be strong.

Nice lifts and pretty sick physique man. I am about your height except a small 164lbs right now with the goal of getting up to 185-190lbs. Can I ask what your diet looked like while you were getting up to 190? Did you eat clean and let the lean mass come slowly or do a faster dirty bulk and then just cut the fat from there?

I have hit 190 a lot of times in my life. The first few times I did, I was eating pretty dirty. This most recent time, when I got up to 202 and started cutting down, I was eating fairly clean. I posted an example of what I was eating earlier in the thread.

I bounced up to about 206 before I started getting a little doughy and dropped down to around 200 for now. Only have one myspace angle shot to show for it.

I also am in desperate need for a tan, haha.

Ended up deadlifting 620lbs for a double this week, and got my squat up to 540. Press hit 245, while bench is still about the same.

Looking thick and strong as f0ck man.

No idea why your rating is low.

A SOLID physique.
