5 Years of Sun Observations, NASA SDO

For all of my fellow science geeks.

Wow. That was breathtaking.

You know, primitive peoples once worshipped the sun as their supreme deity.

I imagine if they were to see these images, they would be confirmed in their belief that theirs is an awesome god.

And yet…

Damn. Our little star is just one of countless billions of trillions, and not even a very remarkable one at that.

Puts things into perspective.

Two questions:

  1. I thought it was supposed to be white as viewed from space?
  2. Can this bitch just explode at any given moment and vaporize us?

Absolutely man, inspiring and perplexing all at the same time.

Photosynthesis, solar power, warmth, Vitamin D, suntans, skin cancer.

Thank you, Mr Sun!

A lot of the images are being viewed through various filters-- so you are able to see through different wavelengths of light and saturations. If this were not the case, every pixel well would be so over saturated you wouldn’t have an image worth viewing.

No worries, our sun won’t explode. But will burn hotter and will eventually swell up making life here inhabitable. Billions of years from now. Our sun is stable for a long time. Asteroids impacting the Earth I would say are a much more real concern.

Not saying you are wrong, but how would we know this to be the case?

Like most questions asked on T-Nation, the answer is the same.

Not enough mass.

It’s cool man. There are different types of stars. Different stars follow different behaviors in their life cycle. Google the “Hertzbrung Russell Diagram.” Here’s an image…

So, all stars have different masses, temperatures, pressures, luminosities and so on… To give a very short and overly simplistic answer our Sun does not have enough mass to explode (go supernova). It will one day in billions of years swell up as it starts burning helium and make Earth a desolate hot inhabitable place.

WHAAAAT?!

…oh wait. BILLIONS of years. Whew. That’s a relief. I thought you said “millions” of years. We’s still got some time.

Not even worried.

I lol’ed, and also at Bruce Willis

I thought it wasn’t technically burning… I thought it was fusing shit together?

lol. I had exactly the same first thought. I know the sun’s stable, I know scientists have most of this stuff incredibly well-figured-out. But that thing looks like a caricature of a frantic little fuck itching to blow.

I had to turn off the youtube… I was getting depressed thinking at any given moment I might only have 7 mins to live, and really want to have sex a couple thousand more times before I die.

LOL

Indeed.

Unless: unless it’s the only one that has managed to cook up little beings capable of – and inclined to undertake – the design and construction of castles and cathedrals and crotch-less panties.

In that case, I’d say it’s the others that are unremarkable.

You are a man with his eyes open and his priorities in order, and if I ever say different, punch me in the face.

[quote]countingbeans wrote:

Yes. I believe that it will not blow up due to the fact that it does not have enough mass/energy to fused iron atoms, which typically lead to a supernova because of iron’s ability to absorb a lot of energy relative to lighter elements.

Would the credit go to just the star there though, or our entire solar system? Pretty much everything in it plays an important role, some obviously more than others(Earth, the moon, Sol, Jupiter).
