It would be selfish to run. Working where I do I have seen people getting married literally within the walls of the hospice. A final act of love and devotion.
One guy I still keep in touch with - We had to wheel his girl into our day care room which we’d decorated for the event. She was bagged with a drip and O2 feed. It was one of the most beautiful and moving things I’ve ever witnessed.
She died just three days later. We’ve spoken about it since and he wouldn’t have done it any other way, other than marrying her earlier when she could have walked down the isle to the man she loved.
But then is it not selfish NOT to run? Do you think she’s strong enough to be with you through that just so you can have someone’s hand to hold? Bear in mind she is probably even stronger than you give her credit for.
If my girl left me in that situation, I’d understand but I’d still want to be with her through everything. For me the pain would be greater to not be by her side. I’d take that pain though if she had to follow that path.
If it’s not just for the hand to hold, I know what I’d do.
Judgement call my friend. Choose your own path - just remember that the easy choice is not always the best - not that there is an easy choice either way on this one.
If you decide to stay with her, I want an invite to the wedding. If you decide against, I for one will stand shoulder to shoulder with you and agree with you wholeheartedly.

This thread reminds me of a story my dad told me not long ago.
One of his high school classmates and fellow vietnam vets found out he only had 6 months to live. The man had battled alcoholism and drug addiction since his service, but the cancer was linked to agent orange exposure. The guy immediately started talking about lawsuits, so VA settled out of court pretty quickly and gave him 100% disablity pay, plus back pay for the 20+ years since his service.
He cashed the check and shacked up in a local motel with a couple of hookers who made frequent trips to the ABC store and the dope dealers for him. I guess he died pretty happy.
- Eat a really really big pizza.
- Go to an all-you-can-eat and try to eat as much as possible.
- Write my will.
- Do a triathlon or marathon
- Take my family on holiday somewhere really memorable then eat really high quality amazing food, ie you’d rather than die than to eat another meal.
