That’s very misleading. At least send them to something that’s worth their time.

I was hoping that was a Rick Roll…and I’m glad it was.

A lot of you guys have no idea what great film is. It’s funny how the philosophy of this site gets reduced to “iron and sex” when the editor-in-chief is such an advocate of intellect and education.
You’re picking “good movies,” not “great films.” Seriously…Bloodsport? Transformers? Office Space? You’re children. Pulp Fiction, American History X, The Usual Suspects, et al are all good movies, but they have no place in a list of the 5 greatest films of all time. Maybe Pulp Fiction could make it into the top 50. Top 100 is more like it though.
Anyway, in no particular order:
The Godfather Part I
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Seven Samurai
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Now if we were talking about my favorite movies to watch, the list would be different. But let’s stick to the topic.
That’s a pretty good list right there.
I can’t believe someone mentioned The Matrix Trilogy. The first one was one of the best action/sci-fi movies ever, but 2 and 3 sucked so much ass it’s not even funny.
It’s sad. It’s like someone starting a thread about the 5 greatest books of all time and everyone chiming in with books by Stephen King and Kurt Vonnegut. Good books, sure, but nowhere near the 5 greatest of all time. King pales in comparison to Dostoevsky, just like Tarantino pales in comparison to Kurosawa. And I guarantee neither of them would argue with me (despite Tarantino’s high opinion of himself).
Thanks for clarifying that!
Although I must disagree with the godfather (which is still an awesome movie)
Five films I would try to impress alien visitors with:
1 Paths of Glory
2 Brazil
3 Mishima
4 Troy
5 Raging Bull
Some runner Ups: blade runner, taxi driver, fight club, violent cop, hardboiled, any peter greenaway flic from his 85 to 95 period, rashomon, aguirre the wrath of god

You, sir, have very bad taste in movies.
Care to elaborate on your sophisticated remark?
Was the movie too manly for your taste? I suppose, Gladiator is the more comforting pick for a fragile sexuality?
Also strange, how can my taste be so bad if we have two matches (Kurosawa, Kubrick)?

I believe that anyone who plucks Troy in his 5 top movies ever has bad taste. And Gladiator, while much better than Troy, is still nowhere near “top 5” material.
You can in that what you will, but Troy does not have the attributes to be a great movie.

That’s a pretty bad joke.
Whats wrong with troy?
I rather enjoyed it.

I don’t remember much ghey in Troy myself, although unlike you, I didn’t spend much time looking at Brad Pitt.
Rose Byrne FTW.

It was a turd. They hyped it up as an adaptation of the Illiad, but gave us horseshite.
Paris died in the war.
Achilles was killed outside of Troy.
Patroclus & Achilles weren’t cousins.
The high point of that movie was Diane Krugers ass.
fight club
pulp fiction
the rounders
how high
not another teen movie

Oh you didn’t like it because of historical accuracy.
Didn’t really care about that.

It was the fact that they hyped it up as such. Not a bad movie if you look at from an entertainment POV, but I felt a bit ripped off when I saw it. I’m just bitter.
And there are so many more movies out there that are better.
OK, most of these have been mentioned, but…
1 and 2 are immovable. The rest have room for debate. There are surely some better movies out there, but these are just 5 I like and can watch again and again.
Bloodsport is easily my favorite movie of all-time. I can say with complete seriousness that it affected me in a profound manner. It shaped me into who I am today.

Films are a source of entertainment, if one film entertains one person it may not entertain the next. There is NO one greatest film just like there is NO greatest colour, it is purely based on the individual’s opinion of a film. Most people’s top 5 list if they are honest will be different to the next person’s top 5, and to say someone has bad taste because they like a film you disliked, or picked a film for their top 5 you disagree with, is rather silly, you’ll be arguing over which colour is best next.
People shouldn’t get caught up in some bullshit film critic stuff. Here’s my definition of “Greatest” movies. 1. A movie that you watched (as opposed to haveing read about from some critic) 2. You loved it the first time you watched it, 2. You loved it even more the second time you watched it, 3. You’ve watched it many times and never got tired of watching it, 4. You’d watch it again tommorrow.
My list:

5. Bridge Over the River Kwai (to this day I love the part where Alec Guiness comes out of the tin dog shed after many days without food or water in scorching heat–he can barely walk but by God he has won the contest of wills–He was either going to prevail or die).
Bit of topic but I always found it funny for some reason that the only other successful novel to movie adaption Pierre Boulle had besides this was Planet of the Apes. Quite a differrence in subject matter.

Dammit, Reservoir Dogs. Wild Bunch, now I want those on my list. It’s just impossible to boil it down to five movies.
