In no order:

The Shawshank Redemption

The Day the Earth Stood Still (The original)

Gladiator

The Empire Strikes Back

and a worthy mention goes to American History X.

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory… …will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature"

1.Matrix Trilogy
2.Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2
3.Batman Begins

Only two of these are worthy, rest seem like a joke. Really matrix trilogy and star wars 3?!

  1. Leon
  2. Blade Runner
  3. LOTR
    4.Seven Samurai
  4. Rambo first blood

close behind:
Electra
The One
Unleashed
The Prodigal Son
House of Flying Daggers

I’m not seein’ a lot of these choices. I mean sure, The One is entertaining, great fight scenes, lots of action. And Kill Bill’s got tons of blood and great lines, and Star Wars 3 you get to see the birth of Vader.

But the thread was the 5 Greatest Movies EVER MADE. I guess I’m a snob, but you can’t possibly tell me that Zoolander, Office Space, or The Fountain are in the same universe as Godfather, Gone with the Wind, The Shootist, The Day the Earth Stood Still, or Casablanca. And I love my Office Space.

I can make a case for each of my movies, including Star Wars (thats EP IV for you new guys), even though I kinda think I should have included Gone w/the Wind or Shawshank in place of Good, Bad, and Ugly, or something else.

So, the universally acknowledged BEST EVER–can someone justify the presence of Zoolander or any of these other goofy choices? Thought not.

Obviously a lot of these kids are around the age of 15 and can’t remember anything that was made more than a couple of years ago.

When considering the “greatness” of a movie, it isn’t just about the movie itself but the impact that it had on all movies that have been made since. While Gone with the Wind is an epic american film, and a well told story, I don’t think it influenced much that came after it, while The Good the Bad and the Ugly left its mark on just about everything that came since.

  1. Forest Gump
  2. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
  3. Any of the Rocky movies
  4. Kikujiro(Japanese)
  5. The pianist

Honorable mentions:

Casablanca
Die Hard
Rambo first blood
One flew over the cuckoo’s nest
Dances with wolves/The last samurai(they both have the same theme)

  1. Pulp fiction
  2. Snatch
  3. Scarface
  4. Gladiator
  5. Troy

Ok maybe not Star wars 3, but in its place equilibrium

And the matrix trilogy is the greatest movie of all time. The philosophy and meta physics behind it is blind blowing.

My Fav 5 in a rough order:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Pulp Ficition
Fight Club
Memento
Collateral

high plains drifter
deliverance
glengarry glen ross
kill bill 1 2
ghost dog

honorable mention : the magnificent 7

American History X
The Last Samurai
Braveheart
Revenge of the Sith
The Matrix

Office Space gets in on pure quotability alone, bro. I don’t think a day goes by at work that a co-worker or I doesn’t use a line from that movie. You sound like a movie snob when you talk about Casablanca. This is T-Nation, not E-Nation, broseph.

Anyone ever see “The Life of David Gale” ??

Yeah.

Well on one level I agree with you completely regarding GBandU vs. GWTW. However, Gone with the Wind broke the barrier of all movie barriers–it was the very first movie to have profanity in it. How’s that for influencing movie history?

That’s one reason it’s up in the air for me.

I told you I love my Office Space. It’s one of my favorite movies ever. But it just can’t get in. There’s too much ground-breaking film to include it. If this were “Your Favorite 5 Movies Ever” then it would stand a very good chance of being in my top 5 list.

If you haven’t seen Casablanca you can’t talk to me about this being T-Nation vs. E-nation bro. Casablanca has some of the most famous scenes of any movie ever made. It also manages to be a movie that deals with romance without being all sloppy-sentimental-feel-good, hallmark moment filled. There’s no fluff in the movie. That’s the point. It’s stood the test of time and influenced tons upon tons of directors, actors, and screenwriters.
