Why do you think almost all countries have abandoned it? The parameters of the gold standard are always used to deny public spending. But when is it used to deny or curb military spending, wars, tax breaks for successful corporations or subsidies? With the gold standard your fiscal space is very limited. Without it the fiscal horizon is much broader. The principles of MMT are used to help the ruling class but the gold standard is used to keep the lower classes down. We haven’t been on the gold standard since Nixon took us off in August 1971. So why is it still being used as an excuse to throttle down the lower classes?
