Yup … those front line guys are the structure of an effective offense (and defense) - unsung heroes man and a lot of interesting athletic shit happening in those trenches
I don’t understand why these guys hold out for contracts. I understand they want more money but I think they want more than one contract, too. More money for a crap team might actually be less money. No bonuses for 2 yards per carry. You’re not rushing for 1000+ behind that Jets line. And no post season bonuses.
On top of all that, how do you justify your next contract? You don’t and you get a mediocre deal at best…if you survive the beating you take.
I guess the worst part of all that holdout nonsense is that it works.
There are a few legit holdouts. Barring those, I’d say they think they’re more important than they are based on how much press they receive/pretty plays they make. Passive fans love that shit and it sells merchandise. That being said, when promoted right, anyone can sell jerseys.
Who the fuck gets Mono AFTER they’re out of college? WHAT ARE YOU DOING SAM? The Jets looked promising to start the season, then we lose CJ Mosely, a key linebacker, our quarterback, our backup quarterback (who sucked anyway), and one of our young receivers. We weren’t winning anything big this year, but you just want the team to develop, not crash and burn at the beginning…
But if they developed and DIDNT crash and burn, would they even be the Jets?
Melvin Gordon’s holdout is fair. They are offering him 10 mil a year (I know it’s an astronomical amount of $ but it’s about market averages, and that’s low for an RB of his caliber), which he wants more than since RBs are making 13-15 a year, and yet when the Chargers are courting trades, they’re asking for a first round pick. So they don’t want to pay him like a first round pick, but they want others to pay him like one. The Chargers are a pretty ridiculous organization sometimes.
The funny thing about the RB position is that good candidates are a dime a dozen. Those rookie contracts are pretty cheap, too.
Saquon is the exception. Although the Giants O line this year might actually be league average with the potential for further improvement.
My conspiracy theory is that Shurmur has not been riding Saquon as hard this year so far, precisely to have them lose badly, so that Shurmur could talk management into allowing him to play Daniel Jones earlier than stated (by Mara himself).
On top of that the smart coaches are having pretty good success with running back by committee rather than giving one guy 30 touches per game. Less injuries, cheaper athletes and the ypc are about the same as one elite guy.
It also makes the position less important. Someone gets hurt? Who’s next? But if you put everything into one guy and he goes down then you’re in trouble.
Conner is an easy example in Pittsburgh. Next man up is getting paid in the near future.
I really like the lightning and thunder combos in the backfield.
Welp I guess it worked.
Antonio Brown released.
Since Brown actually played one game, I wonder if he gets paid the “guaranteed” part of the contract.
He got the signing bonus. The rest was based on performance. I saw a breakdown somewhere and had different amounts for yards, catches, TDs, etc.
He actually has not gotten the signing bonus. He’s due to get a 5 mil installment on Monday but the Pats could theoretically say that since he knew he was under investigation that could interfere with his playing that that voids it. Don’t know how it’ll play out at all. He deserves nothing, of course.
I enjoyed the reports that labeled AB a genius mastermind. He’s just a talented mental patient. And none of that talent extends to his intelligence.
Any guesses about Brown’s future?
Will he play again this season? Or in the future?
Unless Jerry Jones picks him up or all the charges are explicitly dismissed, I think there’s no way he plays this season, and that his career is likely over. Pushed out of 3 teams in one year, threatened coaches and GMs, accused of rape and sexual assault, proof of witness intimidation, active lawsuits against him for not paying businesses, and worst of all, he temporarily had a blond mustache. He’s literally poison. You can hate Kaepernick all you want, but if AB ever plays another snap and Kap remains blackballed, the NFL can never claim any sort of moral high ground again.
More on the guaranteed part:
“Under the Salary Guarantee section, if Brown were to take ‘any action that materially undermines the public’s respect for, or is materially critical of, the Club, the Player’s teammates or the Club’s ownership, coaches, management, operations of policies then, upon election of the Club, the guarantees set forth in this section… will be null and void.’”
(From a NY Post article)
I’d say Belichick looked like a man who felt publicly disrespected at that press conference that he walked out of.
It looks bad when you see it all written out.
I didn’t even chronicle him burning his feet, refusing to practice over a helmet, and still within the past year threatening to break a reporters jaw, getting pulled over doing 100 in a Porsche, the list goes on.
From Rotoworld:
ESPN Boston reports Antonio Brown is unlikely to get any of his $9 million signing bonus from the Patriots.
The Patriots plan to use the “representation warranty clause” to void Brown’s signing bonus. Brown didn’t disclose he was dealing with an off-field situation before signing with New England, which they view as a breach of contract. The NFLPA could file a grievance, but it sounds like Brown may only end up with his $1 million salary, two game checks ($125K), and a $33,333 roster bonus. Since Brown was released after June 1, any money the Patriots owe can be spread out over the next two years.
I’d say Belichick looked like a man who felt publicly disrespected at that press conference that he walked out of.
The Patriots had this Goldilocks scenario in their dreams a la Randy Moss.
They didn’t realize Brown is genuinely nuts, not just misunderstood, not just someone who no longer wants to play for a shitty team.
Meanwhile, Moss is now gainfully employed as an analyst on one of the football shows. Good for him, never would’ve thunk it.
