Melo’s 3 to shut down that Dallas run was just sick, not because it was such a difficult shot or anything but he had literally just come off the bench for the inbounds play with <5 on the shot clock, and he was pretty cold in the 2nd half up to that point after the scorching hot 1st half. No biggie I’ll just end your playoff hopes real quick =p.

Ha. He was in town for a coaching clinic and was with one of his old Notre Dame buddies who played football and runs a sports talk radio program here in Houston. My buddies had no idea who he was. I’ve played in a few pro-ams and have played with and met some pretty well known ball players, but this was the only time I was giddy. I mean, he was the man sittin’ next to the man! I was trying to play it cool but I’m pretty sure my shit eating grin gave me away. He was a really cool guy.
any other cool stories???
Ha, yeah I’ve got a few. One that I wasn’t there for is in early '05 the girl I was dating at the time bartened at a place called “Joia”, which was the new hot club at the time [no longer there]. Dennis Rodman came in, ordered over 8 grand in bottles and tried to walk his tab. One of the managers chased him outside and asked where he was going. Rodman flipped out and started yelling “These people are here for me! No one would be here if I wasn’t! YADAYADAYADA!” To which the manager replied “Maybe five years ago bud, now pay your tab or your has-been ass is going to jail.” Rodman paid.
Was playing at 24hr fitness off of Voss and San Felipe when Shawn Kemp came in. This was 4-5 years ago, so he was pretty hefty [at least 350] and out of shape, but he was raining 25 footers like they were freethrows in an open gym, crossing people over and throwing no-look passes all over the place. He could also move way quicker than anyone that size should be able to. I caught a dunk on the break and he told me I had hops. I said thanks and as I walked away some kid asked him what his vert was, to which Kemp replied “54”! Now, Shawn Kemp could get up, but no one in the history of the universe has a 54" vert! I’ll never understand why the Reignman felt the need to lie like that to that kid.
I dunked on Taliek Brown, former starting point guard for UCONN. Not really on him I guess, but was trailing on the break when I caught the ball and went up with two-hands. He started to jump but I was already in the air. It totally caught him by surprise 'cause I know he wasn’t expecting it/didn’t think I could do it. That’s by far my favorite personal basketball moment.
Pics or it didn’t happen.
Kidding.
That sucks about Shawn Kemp lying to the kid. Maybe he was just trying to impress the kid, because maybe the kid wouldn’t know any better. Nice job of the dunk with Brown close behind. And Rodman being Rodman, I guess.
I figured kinda the same thing Vader said. He really didn’t know so he tossed some completely ridiculous number out there to sound cool. Still makes no sense though. Why lie Reignman, why ? Oh, Brown wasn’t behind me. Shoulda clarified, he was chasing the guy with the ball down and I was trailing the play. The dude up front dropped a behind-the-back bounce pass my way and as Brown turned and was about to jump, it was too late. He was a good sport about it though. He kinda chuckled and gave me props as we ran back down the floor. I don’t know where [or if] he’s playing now. His jumper was shaky and he wasn’t real quick, but he had a ridiculous handle. I mean RIDICULOUS. Sure he’s overseas somewhere.
Ha, thanks T, Nomore and Vader. I’ve also run into Bob Sura a few times. His girl is hands down one of the finest women I’ve ever seen in my life, and he’s pretty cool too.[/quote]
Flash, interesting stories. I sometime hoop up that Voss 24 hour but I prefer Chimney Rock and Westhiemer. Not a big fan of the sideway courts on Voss.
About Kemp, do you know if it was in the Summer? The reason I ask is becaue I played in T-Mac softball tournament about 4 - 5 years ago and he Kemp played too. There was a bunch of players/rappers in it. Robert Horry, Tracey, Luther Head, tons others just can’t think of them right now. My team played with Mike Jones (Mike James was there too), the rapper. He was cool and funny but didn’t have an idea how to wear a baseball glove. We played against Paul Wall and Horry. Horry talks trash anytime he gets a chance.
He could play pretty well and T-Mac went yard a bunch. Anyways…that is about all from me.

Shawn Kemp is an ass. I was riding in an elevator with him and Gary Payton when I was about 10. Asked for an autograph Gary Payton was cool but Shawn Kemp asked for 20 bucks…

Oh yeah, I remember you telling me that. What a clown.
That’s funny about GP, because you would think he would give the cold shoulder. But you, my brother, and a friend have met the Glove and said he was really cool.

J, Voss used to be where it was at. There were a handful of NBA, college and overseas ballplayers that came through that made the pickup games no joke. It has fallen off drastically in the last few years. I hear the run at Meyerland is still pretty good though. It was around summertime when Kemp came through. Think he has [or had] a house here and was trying to get in shape to mount a comeback. Heard he was up there a handful of times, but I only saw him that day. He used to be at Fonde alot too.

Don’t feel bad man, Warren Moon did the same thing to my neighbor when we were little guys. His kids were in a swim meet we were in and my neighbor went up to him and asked him for his autograph. Moon said “you got $20 bucks?” My neighbor thought he was joking and started laughing. Moon said something like “Do I look like I’m joking?” and told him to leave him alone. What kind of jerkoff does that to a 10y year old kid? Glad the Glove was cool, he and Chris Webber are a riot on NBA TV.

When they had him on the TNT Inside the NBA show while Chuck was fixing up his DUI situation, the show was hilarious. I love Chuck too so it’s a shame that GP was only on as a temp replacement, it’d be so awesome if they’d just bring him on with CWeb more.
Good job for the rockets and magics to force a game 7.
Lakers are a fraud!! No Championship this year.
Wow the Rockets proved me wrong again! My hats are off to that team! Every time I watch the Rockets I just get pissed off knowing that the Spurs had the rights to Scola but wouldn’t pay him and let him go. What a bonehead move.
OOOOHHHHHHHH two game 7s!!! Gonna be a great Sunday!! Superman got twice as many touches last night as in Game 5, and it turned out to be huge. Rockets lead the Lakers wire to wire, Scola coming up big.
I cannot believe how well the Rockets are playing. They are just plain playing harder than LA. If they’re not careful, the Lakers are gonna fuck around and lose this series. With that, sometimes I wonder how much the NBA influences things for ratings. Kinda like the Celts going three game 7’s last year and then winning the title.
Just saw my man Wayman Tisdale RIP ![]()
He had a two year bout with cancer. His leg was amputated below the knee, and the hospital hooked him up with a prosthetic leg with a big OU logo on it.
He ALWAYS had a smile on his face, always made time for fans, always gave autographs, a true gentleman. I know we talk about guys being nice and friendly, but he was the model athlete and gentleman. Even after his surgery, he was all smiles and didn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him. I never met him, but I was in his presence a few times during OU basketball games when he was an analyst, and you couldn’t help but to like the guy. Great musician as well.
RIP

This makes me sad. I always liked him and enjoyed his music as well. My Dad won’t like hearing this either.

Last night the Lakers got their pants pulled down by a team facing elimination. Right out the gate, they were hustled into a huge deficit. But, they did recover for the most part, and by the third quarter, they weren’t playing poorly at all. The Refs did their part with some stupid calls(the technical on Kobe, the non-touch foul against Farma(seriously, there wasn’t incidental contact at all) that led to 2 shots, the non-kick ball after the rockets kicked it between two players twice, the whistle that was blown BEFORE Odom jumped for contact he was assumed to make, combined with an assortment of non-calls from Scola whacking just about everyone who was on him, Artest shoving Gasol with his elbow, and most bizarrely, Aaron Brooks hooking kobe in the arm and throwing him to the floor… and not even getting a T?
But bad refereeing didn’t lose the game for LA. However, this is a trend I have seen all postseason. When a team is down, the Refs seem to make it extra difficult for them to get back in it. Whenever momentum begins to build, back-to-back calls kill it, or a player gets in foul trouble.
The one call that stands out the most is the Technical on Kobe. He didn’t do anything at all. Artest made a big dramatic show of it by running away from the scene. But on the replay there was nothing at all warranting a technical or even a regular foul. But, the Refs T’d Kobe based on the history between the two. No one saw anything they just “assumed” that if Artest did that, Kobe must have provoked him. That to me is the principle issue with Refereeing in this league. Missed calls are one thing, but trying to balance out the game or otherwise make calls based on things that haven’t happened yet(but may have happened before)… well, that’s just wrong.
Anyway, I commend the Rockets for their brilliant play in tough situations. I’m not at all worried about LA though. The Lakers may be the most bipolar team in basketball, but they have demonstrated time and time again that they come back hard after a sore loss.
Oh geeze. Wayman Tisdale’s gone? That stinks. Great ambassador for the game, and for the bass guitar. So young too… Cancer sucks. RIP.
Heard about Wayman Tisdale this morning on ESPN. Was a good player and according to those who knew him an even better man. R.I.P.
Hat’s off to the Rockets. They played with great intensity and focus throughout the Series, but despite being bipolar at times, Los Angeles was Ultimately too much for them. LA advances to the WCF for the second consecutive season to face the Nuggets, should be a good one.
Alright, we saw two blowouts yesterday: one I’m not surprised about and one I didn’t see coming. Props to LAL and ORL for advancing to their respective CFs. HOU has nothing to be ashamed of, they played phenomenal and are setting themselves up well for next year. ORL brought a full team effort all game and basically led wire to wire to beat BOS on the road in game 7 and winning back to back games after being down 3-2 to close the series.
CF predictions:
East - LBJ and Co haven’t played in a month it seems. They are well rested and should be ready to come firing out of the gates, although I wouldn’t be surprised if they are rusty. The Magic coming off a great series against the Celtics, but may be a little worn down. Although the teams are pretty well matched, the Cavs will be too much for the Magic. Cavs in 6.
West - Lakers coming off a great series with the Rockets, and the Nuggets are definitely the hottest team left in the playoffs right now. Although the Nuggets have shown a lot of heart and have dominated a lot of their games this playoff season, the Lakers will be too much, as long as LAL comes to play every game and limits their mistakes. Lakers in 6.
