2009 NBA Playoffs

Nowitzki and the Mavs finally came up big. Great win for Dallas against the Nuggets. This series is over, though.

K-Mart and Cuban talk shit after Game 4.

Ha. He was in town for a coaching clinic and was with one of his old Notre Dame buddies who played football and runs a sports talk radio program here in Houston. My buddies had no idea who he was. I’ve played in a few pro-ams and have played with and met some pretty well known ball players, but this was the only time I was giddy. I mean, he was the man sittin’ next to the man! I was trying to play it cool but I’m pretty sure my shit eating grin gave me away. He was a really cool guy.

Yeah I agree with Male. Battier, O-Wool, maybe other players. You know how to pick your spots.

Speaking of the man sitting next to the man, I met Scottie Pippen at the mall one time, he was a complete jerk. Didn’t sign autographs, didn’t say hello, had his bodyguards talk for him, etc. Funny thing was that he was getting his nails done. I guess he didn’t want anyone touching his hands.
I’ve heard that about him. There was a restaurant here in town when Pippen played here that dubbed him “No tippin’ Pippen” 'cause he would comin in, order a shit ton of food/drink, treat everyone like shit and takeoff without leaving a dime. What an asshole.

Carmelo and Wright tangle up in the first half. Melo got a technical on this one. He nearly got thrown out for pushing Wright off and grazing him in the face.

any other cool stories???
Ha, yeah I’ve got a few. One that I wasn’t there for is in early '05 the girl I was dating at the time bartened at a place called “Joia”, which was the new hot club at the time [no longer there]. Dennis Rodman came in, ordered over 8 grand in bottles and tried to walk his tab. One of the managers chased him outside and asked where he was going. Rodman flipped out and started yelling “These people are here for me! No one would be here if I wasn’t! YADAYADAYADA!” To which the manager replied “Maybe five years ago bud, now pay your tab or your has-been ass is going to jail.” Rodman paid.

Was playing at 24hr fitness off of Voss and San Felipe when Shawn Kemp came in. This was 4-5 years ago, so he was pretty hefty [at least 350] and out of shape, but he was raining 25 footers like they were freethrows in an open gym, crossing people over and throwing no-look passes all over the place. He could also move way quicker than anyone that size should be able to. I caught a dunk on the break and he told me I had hops. I said thanks and as I walked away some kid asked him what his vert was, to which Kemp replied “54”! Now, Shawn Kemp could get up, but no one in the history of the universe has a 54" vert! I’ll never understand why the Reignman felt the need to lie like that to that kid.

I dunked on Taliek Brown, former starting point guard for UCONN. Not really on him I guess, but was trailing on the break when I caught the ball and went up with two-hands. He started to jump but I was already in the air. It totally caught him by surprise 'cause I know he wasn’t expecting it/didn’t think I could do it. That’s by far my favorite personal basketball moment.

I’m not arguing that LeBron is better than MJ (which he’s not), I’m just talking about one aspect. I haven’t seen MJ HL’s in a long time, so my view is probably skewed.

When you say ‘chest-to-chest…’ MJ won most (if not all) of these matchups. Do you think no one goes chest-to-chest with LeBron because they know the consequences, and just don’t challenge him in the first place? Just curious.

I agree about the Kobe/ref situation. No love, even though he’s a superstar. The numbers say it all:

LeBron: 81 games played, 762 FT attempts (9.41/game)
Kobe: 82 games played, 564 FT attempts (6.88/game)

Difference: 2.53 FTs/game (207.46 FT/season)

LeBron shoots 78%, Kobe 86%. If Kobe got 9.41 FTs/game, and shot at an 86% clip, he would have made 655 FTs, which is almost 100 more FTs than he ATTEMPTED this season. Granted, it’s only 1-2 points more per game, but definitely a bias through the course of a season and across a career.

C’mon that’s a difference of 2.6~ a game, which is just over 1 called foul per game. With the amount of time LBJ handles the ball(more than Kobe, I know you won’t argue me on this one) and takes it to the rim(again, more than Kobe, although this isn’t due to Kobe lacking any talent this is just by choice as his outside game is much much more refined) you don’t believe that he garners 1 more foul per game? Lebron also turns a lot of would be out-of-bounds fouls into free throws because he’s strong enough to muster up a bullshit shot.

I think you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill right now because in the playoffs Lebron is abusing teams with no interior defense by pounding the lane at will and getting ~12 attempts a game(maybe 13? I don’t know if it got higher after last night).

Also, my above statements about MJ getting calls was not in an attempt to compare Lebron to MJ’s greatness, MJ is and probably always will be in a class of his own unless Lebron keeps having these Olympic revelations for the next few seasons, and even then they are 2 different athletes, and will be compared due to the nature of sports but probably shouldn’t be.

In the playoffs it’s over 6 a game. They showed the graphic on ABC the other day. Kobe’s shooting 7 a game and LBJ’s shooting over 13. This is not an imaginary stat. This is really happening.

I know you watch the games, Kobe isn’t going to the rack nearly as much in the playoffs, it’s not even close, he has an impressive frontline that he is letting do work(especially in the Utah series) down there while he tears it up with his shooting game. Lebron is instead abusing the lack of interior D of his opposition by driving every other play and the refs blow the whistle like they do for ANY player that drives it hard and often.

Kobe has also played 4 games now against 2 premier man defenders(Battier/Artest) who aren’t giving him silly fouls leading to +1’s.

Kobe is hardly getting “woe is me” treatment, he still gets his. This isn’t about being on Lebrons junk, the dude gets the whistles EVERY star player gets when they drive, he just does it far more often.

Yes, this is really happening.

As far as the other gripes about the media praising him like he is Jesus in sneakers, that I agree with. I also think he cares way too much about “business Lebron, future billionaire” and not enough about the multiple rings he has the talent to win.
I totally agree with you that Kobe’s not going to the rack as often as James does. My arguement is that when he does he doesn’t get the call, and whether James gets hit or not the whistle blows. Dwyane Wade gets those calls as well. I understand that the league protects it’s “stars”, but if it’s gonna happen I’d like it to be more consistent. It’s like someone has already mentioned, Kobe is the guy the NBA loves to hate.

You know, the Nuggets-Mavs series is really intersting. Aside from the 4th quarters in Games 1 and 2, Dallas has basically played Denver even through 4 games. Melo’s shot grows in signifcance as the series progresses. Instead of 2-2 going back to Denver, it’s 3-1 and it’s going to be tough for the Mavs to win 2 in Denver.

Hopefully the Birdman will be ready to go for Game 5. Denver struggled big time in the post without him in there.

On a side note, am I the only one who is kind of tired of Reggie Miller’s color commentating? He’s kind of… what’s the word… lame.

While the Lakers are the team that the league hates to even like.

I remember a few years ago someone, think it was Kenny Smith, said the biggest difference between Bryant and Jordan was Jordan was a seen as a good guy who everyone liked and could relate to, and Kobe was seen as the villain, someone who lived in his own world who didn’t care to be related to.

And yeah, Reggie Miller sucks. He’s always talking shit to/about Kenny Smith.

I know it’s a miniscule difference, but every shot adds up. I definitely agree with you on LBJ handling the ball more than Kobe, and he def takes it to the cup ALOT more than Kobe, which, in turn, he draws more fouls.

Yeah, LBJ is def taking advantage of weak interior D’s, but that won’t happen in the next round, regardless of if they play BOS or ORL. Will be interesting to see how LBJ adjusts his game, if he does at all.

I do agree MJ is better and will probably always be better than LBJ, I was just speaking about one aspect of his game earlier.

No arguments from me on anything stated here, we agree through and through.

I see you are from Ohio, is it safe to assume you are a Cavs fan?

DJ, I agree with you. Good series so far. Melo’s confidence is sky high now, and Billups is just what the Nuggets needed. Couldn’t be a better fit.

Yeah, Bird and Nene need to come up big in the post. I do see them advancing to the next round, but either LAL or HOU’s frontcourt are big, strong, and fast, so it will be interesting to see the matchups.

Wow, game 5 LAL-HOU is definitely a 180 from game 4.

And the Magic blowing a 14-point lead is unacceptable. Great comeback by the C’s.

x2

I was watching the cavs game 3 and it was on ABC and I felt like the commentators were both from ATL… “o nice shot LeBron” vs. “See, this is the kind of playing the Hawks should be doing… blahbalhb, advice advice, critique”

I don’t care really… just felt super biased.

Better announcers on all the games would be nice. ESPN’s half time show is pretty damn good cause it is straight forward.

Send him an email to his mailbag, he’ll appreciate it.

That ought to shut the media up for a day or two re: Lakers performance tonight.

LOL I just might.

I remember his sister clowned him, asking him a question like ‘how is it to be the second best basketball player in your family, as well as a bad commentator.’

Nope. One of the first headlines on NBA.com today = “Are the Lakers too lackadaisical this postseason?”… sigh.

Nice comeback by the C’s yesterday (or bad job Orlando blowing a 14 point 4q lead, depending how you look at it). Marbury and Big Baby coming up huge in the fourth. And Rondo’s shot def hit the rim, you can tell in real time by the angle of the way the ball came down after it hit the rim.

And the Lakers showing the Rockets no mercy last night.
