Secondly, I don’t understand getting behind Trayvon as the martyr of racial profiling. He was not, he was committing a crime against someone who did not even know he was black when he initially called the police so the racial bias thing is completely unfounded there. [/quote]
It’s not that simple.
Trayvon is the face of an issue because that is the real reason everyone was upset when his HIGH PROFILE case hit the scene.
It is why some here seem in the dark that racial profiling is a daily issue for entire groups of people…the masses jump on the high profile cases to support their stance.
That is human nature.

I agree about it being human nature to look with suspicion upon those different from you. I don’t really believe we will ever truly get to a point where people don’t notice skin color because our race ties back to our culture and is part of how we identify ourselves. We may get to the point of not caring, but never not noticing.
And regarding Trayvon, I understand that he was made the face of a larger issue. I just wonder why because he was not the best candidate to be made the face of anything really and in doing that I believe the point of trying to create dialogue about something was lost in the trial. I think you had a lot of white people that clung to this and were like “well if this is the best case of injustice they have, then they are just looking for something to complain about”.
It had the unfortunate side effect of giving legitimacy to the opinions of racist whites because they were actually on the side of reason in this trial. I actually liked the way Charles Barkley summed it up and his was probably my favorite commentary through the whole trial even though I don’t really think Zimmerman was profiling Martin based on race.
BARKLEY: And let me tell you, Mr. Zimmerman was wrong to pursue – he was racial profiling. I think Trayvon Martin, God rest his soul, I think he did flip the switch and started beating the hell out of Mr. Zimmerman. But it was just a bad situation. And like I said, the main thing I feel bad for, it gives every black and white person who is racist a platform to vent their ignorance.
That’s the thing that bothers me the most because I watched this trial closely and I watch all these people are television talking about it. A lot of people have a hidden agenda. You know, they want their racist views, whether they are white or black –
BARTIROMO: The bias comes out.
BARKLEY: The bias, it definitely comes out. It was a bad situation, we all lost. And I feel bad for his parents. You don’t ever want to see anybody lose a kid. (CNBC Closing Bell, July 18, 2013)
